This phone seems like it was overhyped...tons of issues

The thread title had me a little worried. I get my phone Monday and I am a smartphone newb and boob at all things techie. I read about others having problems with their contacts list. Anyone hear have issues. Can I have my contacts list set up where I don't have all my facebook friends in it?

You can filter your contacts list, you can select "Phone Contacts" and it'll only show your phone contacts.

If this is your first smartphone, you may want to have Verizon show you the ropes, they offer free classes to teach you how to use your device. It's level of customization is incredibly useful and powerful, albeit a bit overwhelming for first time users, especially if you aren't familiar with smartphones.

I set up a Google Voice account online and tried running it with my app...it just says Retrieving Call Settings...its been stuck there for over 30 minutes, had to do a battery pull to get rid of it.

I'll stick to VVM for now I guess, I just can't seem to get Google Voice to work.

EDIT: Battery pull did the trick. Awesome, I get to save some cash.

Knock the battery pull stuff off... you don't have a crackberry anymore, haha

Seriously though, try pushing the home buttons or the power/screen lock button. If you lock and unlock the screen, that will get rid of a freeze most of the time for me on my droid 1. You don't have to yank the battery all the time.

Obviously you are a noob if you are switching back to a crackberry!

lol thanks. It's really growing on me now, especially with launcherpro, I absolutely love the way it looks plus landscape homescreen = awesome.

As with any new software/hardware there will be a learning curve. But if you are looking for a fun phone to play with you can't beat Android.

If you like LauncherPro check out Quickdesk and Widget Locker too. With those three apps running together you CANT GET A BETTER LAYOUT!! At least in my humble opinion.

Although I am running ADW as opposed to Launcher Pro. But it is still the same concept.

And im glad everything worked out and you are happy. Welcome to the forums and the world of Android!

I mean, it seems like it'd be a great phone if it worked...

-Doubletwist takes forever to sync to iTunes and when it finally does, it misses practically all of my playlists.
-I just bought an app, I got an email saying I was charged, but it won't install, it keeps saying "Authorizing Purchase", when I try to cancel and get a refund, it gives me an error saying there's a problem with the server. So I was charged for an app that I can't even install and it won't let me get a refund. Luckily it was only $0.99
-Visual Voicemail with Verizon doesn't work, it won't connect.
-I try Google Voice, I get an error saying that it can't verify my phone number.

I'm giving this phone a few days but it looks like I'll probably be going back to Blackberry...that phone at least worked.

Figures...my other friend who got one today is in a similar boat...her battery won't even stay on for more than an hour or two before it dies.

have you tried iSyncr for your music? i use it, and it works pretty well, but i have to admit that i'm a pretty rudimentary iTunes user. i download most of my music directly to my phone using Music Junk, and then use iSyncr to transfer that music to my iTunes anyway...

brand new phone, tons of people using networks, expect bugs, errors, server issues.... give it a couple days.

im not really a fan of getting tech things on launch, theres always issues that dont get fixed until a later release.

Amen bro, blessed be the brave beta-testers, the first in the line of firedancedroid

...Another downside...and this is a problem with all Motorola Android phones according to my research, is that they don't get along with Infiniti and Nissan bluetooth stacks.

When someone calls, they can't hear me and their voice sounds muffled, I have to transfer the call to the headset then hit phone again to reactivate the bluetooth and it works fine. Also kinda stinks that you can't transfer your phonebook to the bluetooth stack, you have to enter them all one by one, manually. I knew that going into buying the phone though.

Just FYI, get a foamie microphone cover, it solves a lot of issues. If the mic in your Nissan GTR (ooooh ooooh) is behind a plastic grille, open it and insert a thin layer of foam, remember the A/C blows straight into it up the window. I bluetoothed wife's 2005 Odyssey (yuck, automatic slusher) and had the same issue until i covered teh mic on the A pillar with foam. I think RatShack has 'em.

QuickDesk sounds interesting -- how do you use it? TIA.

After you have Quickdesk installed double tap your home button or long press your search button and it will pop up your Quickdesk screen. You can put any shortcut or widget on that screen when it pops up.

Widget locker just replaces your lock screen (screen with the slider to unlock your phone). It allows you to put shortcuts and widgets directly on your lock screen. Another very cool option.

Androinica actually posted a video review of Widget Locker:

To the original poster, don't pay for VZW's visual voicemail. Theres a website and application (youmail.com and the YouMail app from the market for free) that handles it all much better and for free.

I've had good results using Missing Sync to sync iTunes and such from my macintosh. Not cheap but very, very functional. Requires software on the phone and the mac.

This guy just doesn't want a droid, please do not feed the troll it will go back to Blackberry regardless of what we say or do.... How you can even compare a blackberry to this phone is rediculous....

p.s. none of these problems on my phone, working great for 24+ hours now...

Hate to say this but I too don't seem to have a lot of the problems people are complaining about. Don't get me wrong I think there's more work to be done with this phone BUT I know they will get there. I bought this phone expecting to have some issues. If you go with bleeding edge you have to be prepared to deal with some issues. Most of these are also learning curves and people not understanding how Android phones work.

Good luck, I'm sticking with mine; it needs some work but I still like it.

Hope this hasn't been repeated in this thread by now...I haven't gone through every page of replies. I'm not sure if this would be an issue with Nissan/Infiniti's Bluetooth device manufacturer, but here's what I've experienced:

I have a Kenwood stereo in my car with built-in Bluetooth (by Parrot). When I first got the phone, I paired it to the stereo and it paired successfully. I could make calls and view the incoming and outgoing calls; could even do SMS over the stereo's interface...but the phonebook didn't get pulled over. Couldn't figure out why.

I asked around on this forum and was told that the phone will prompt to allow the Phone Book data to be pulled over. I have to allow it on the phone when the stereo "requests" it...just once, then it'll sync every time I turn the unit on.

Now I can see my phone book on my car stereo too. dancedroid
