[Updated] Verizon Plans To Eliminate 'Grandfathered' 3G Unlimited Data Plans

use
Google Music on your commute via streaming music. Then come back in 2 weeks and tell us how much you are using. I bet that 1GB will get blown out the water

Streaming music will use data, but not NEARLY as high as video. Most estimates (including the data estimator on the Verizon Wireless site) put data rates at about 1MB per minute for streaming music. So, for a 30 minute commute to work each way each work day (5 days per week x 4.3 weeks per month) that's about 1.25GB in a month. That's not a deal breaker for most people.

What can be a deal breaker is streaming HD video - at a rate of close to 1GB PER HOUR!

I called to try and talk them into giving me my upgrade early (i am 2 months out) and they wouldn't budge. I bet if I call tomorrow they would GLADLY do it. (not happening)

Is anything wrong with your current phone? When I called, I asked about an m2 upgrade. They mentioned it was only if there was something very wrong with the phone. I explained some of the issues I was having with my Droid X (Battery Swelling-replaced but problems still occuring, dead strip on screen, data drops, unable to install to sd card after new format). They transferred me to tech support to see if I was eligible for an m2 upgrade. I thought I would need to do step by step process to prove my phone had problems, but they accepted right away that I could upgrade. Although I did have to pay full 2 year price compared to the discounted online price.

Maybe if I called again I would have talked to a rep who would give me an early upgrade with the online discount price, but I did not want to push it (and I was happy that I was able to lock in for 2 more years).

And this was on my 3rd call. On my first, they said I could be approved for a manager override but only for 3g devices. The second said I needed to be an account manager or speak to the main account (I am on a family plan, but not the main line, I believe if I was the main line I would have had more wiggle room). Third time was the charm.

A thought just occurred to me. The title says 3G unlimited data plans. Wishful thinking here, but what if those that upgraded to a 4G phone with unlimited data continued to be grandfathered.

AFAIK, Yes, you can upgrade 3G to 4G with no problem and still grandfathered in.

After June 28:

Q: I'm a current Verizon customer with a 3G phone, but I need faster data downloads. Do I have to go to a new plan if I upgrade to a 4G phone?

A: No, you can keep your old plan. However, if you have an unlimited data plan, you'll be paying full price for that spiffy new 4G phone, as mentioned above.

So for the people that were grandfathered in still have it with the cost of basically buying the phone? Will Verizon charge it monthly or is it billed all at once? If its once I cant afford that

I could really see Verizon's phone sales rapidly declining after this deal. Enough so that the phone manufacturers wouldn't want to launch their phone with Verizon, or at the very least Verizon not receiving any exclusive phones.

Will never happen. Too many people would rather upgrade than pay full retail. Verizon is counting on that. Even if it means paying a little more per month and switching to tiered or family share, people will upgrade rather than pay full price.

I bet they will throttle unlimited customers soon. Their number one priority is to get everyone off unlimited data as soon as possible. I'm sure our phones will be getting daily Bloatware updates once the tiered data plans come out to eat up data so they can make more money. Once I have to switch I will be dumping Netflix and slacker radio and i will put the blame on my tiered plan. Maybe this will piss off these companies and they will drop Verizon. Face it they are greedy assholes.

Sorry, but I stream less and can easily break 1gb in a week.

I have to agree. I don't see that happening either. Verizon is the largest cell provider in the country with the most loyal customer base.

Buying a phone at full retail means paying the entire amount upon purchase. Depending on the cost of the phone, you may be able to bill it to your account, but then you will need to pay the entire amount on the next bill.

One of the small reasons doing away with unlimited is that you can just put your sim card in any 4G Verizon device and use it with your unlimited data like a hotspot device and stream netflix, play online games, watch live football and tv. This is taking up the network.

Streeming music is was more than 1mb per minute

Then you need to call Verizon (and others) and tell them all of their on line calculators are wrong.

Maybe your files were ripped at a very high bit rate? Most of my mp3 files are in the 3 to 5 MB range. Most of them are 4 to 5 minutes long. 1MB per minute seems reasonable to me. (or maybe your files grow as they stream)

This comment is like the I use 2gb and cannot understand why you use 5gb.

I play a lot of large mixes, but I made sure to not cache nor download in high quality, but I still will easily use a lot. You may no.
