Verizon beings unlimited data throttle - Your response?

Yeah me too. I wouldn't have been surprised if they came out with "your phone doesn't support this old data plan" haha...luckily they didn't.

It's not too late, it still might get implemented. They might announce that "it is coming" to encourage a rush to buy 4G phones for the purpose of getting "grandfathered in" sort of like the ending of unlimited to get a rush of people to buy smartphones on the unlimited data plan this past summer.

Dude it is unlimited...they are just slowing it down. This thread has gotten ridiculous. Done with it.

Dude, we understand that our contract stipulates unlimited data but not necessarily unlimited speeds. To the "you signed up for unlimited data but not unlimited speed!!!" crowd...thanks for pointing out the obvious but we're not stupid. We get it.

What we have an issue with is the throttling. And it's not so much the throttling that's the issue, it's the fact that they do it at 2GB. It's so easy to go over 2GB and for someone like me who's paying $120+ a month for service, throttling at 2GB is not cool or acceptable. In the same vein, I would NEVER pay 30 a month for 2GB of data (as the tiered plan prescribes). 2GB is nothing

I'm totally behind "optimization" if it helps the overall network run better but why can't they make the cap 3 or 4GB? I refuse to believe that of that 5%, the people that are using 3GB/4GB or less are dragging the network down. Of that 5%, those that are using over 3GB/4GB probably are dragging down the network and maybe should be throttled.

If the goal of all of these were to improve the network for everyone, then I bet we would see the cap closer to 5gig... but the fact that it is at 2gig tells me that VZW can't force us off of unlimited, but the sure as crap can make it as unpleasant as possible until we decided to move over to tiered data.

<Putting on the Mod Hat>

Let's move back on topic.

<Taking off Mod Hat>

Do y'all think this will ever be lifted, held in place, or just continue to tighten until unlimited plans have been completely phased out?

I think the same thing that happened when data originally became available on cell phones will happen. I previously paid a LOT more for my rate plans in 2000-2005. Nationwide coverage was a lot more than the regional plans, and Data was ridiculously expensive. That was when it first became available on handsets. Gradually as time moved on the prices dropped significantly and we had the $30 unlimited rate plans. I believe a large part of it was the companies covering themselves because they honestly didn't know how much data people would use. As RIM grew and prospered, the data got cheaper.

With the iPhone and now Android, I believe the companies are back to the cover their behinds and wait and see just how much people are going to use. I can see in unlimited data returning again in maybe 5 years or so. The fact is that as handsets become more and more powerful, carriers will have to drop the rate plans. There will come a point just as there was before where data costs made customers shy away from the smart phones and carriers were forced to drop the prices. When more and more people start using their phones as an extension of their workplace the AVG data usage will climb and the ridiculous pricing will once again be a limiting factor.

ha ok...i mean if you say that JD Power does not carry out legitimate surveys, there's not much else I can say here haha.

Just like when I posted the Nielson poll for data usage showing that 2GB usage is actually the 97th percentile, people will believe whatever they want to. it's all a conspiracy and they're out to get us.

Yep like I said the conspiracy theories and the screams of corporate greed sound much more exciting then "it is what it is"

Personally i use from 1 to 5 GB monthly. It really is not fair to throttle me when i have to lines (one being my wifes) that uses significantly less than 2 GB. I am paying for unlimited.

I hate the fact someone says "just use wifi" when you can. I shouldn't have to be looking for wifi everywhere i travel. Verizon is a joke putting limitations on "unlimited".

Though i like Verizon and their coverage, i hate their politics. Always trying to find a way to make a dollar. At some point customers get the worst end of it.

You mean to tell me that since smartphones came out until now that "suddenly" there is an issue with data usage? I understand there are more smartphone users but they also pay a hefty data fee that can offset added costs.

If i wanted to use wifi everywhere i went i would get an ipod touch and a standard phone.

well every time i've called customer service it's been full out crappy, Also verizon tried to switch me to the 2GB tier package without my say so or without notifying me of the changes, But even though i am on unlimited i still like to see how much data i am using and when i had went into the widget it said i went over my monthly allowance so i called CS and the first lady i spoke to had a crappy attitude and was snotty, did not want to do anything so i asked for a supervisor and the supervisor was almost as bad. I argued with that one for a while until she finally decided to fix it. So verizon is a gold digger just sticking their hands in your pockets as they please taking your hard earned money like every other phone company. greedy bastards, so keep an eye on your plan because they will try to change it without your knowledge

While I have not ran into any bad attitudes, I gave had them change features that were ALWAYS IN THEIR FAVOR.

Such as bumping down my text allotment multiple times to where I would be paying an ungodly amount for the per text $.

Never could give me a reason why it would happen either.

Okay guys. We need to get back on the subject and watch the language. This thread has already been closed once and I kindly asked to open it back up as long as no one is bashing on anyone. Keep it civil please. And let the trolls be trolls lol.

All that is going on right now, is marketing strategies...this is how we keep the best coverage and replacements of nine phones per person that won't learn to sbf...We shouldn't be so upset to see these costs coming one way or another...We all know or have heard of people on these forums, sadly, thinking the phone is bricked or a silly sound they don't like or just plain lying to get another device...I've had many customers come to me instead of verizon..(or other repairpeople) saving the company money and themselves..down the road, all of us...costs have to be picked up one way or another..data is the easiest way!! Its smart..I don't like it either, but business has to grow...and feed itself...its not personal its the American way....lol However...I totally understand all of your statements...and feel all of your frustrations...Throttling in itself is almost like we have no control over a device some of us completely own...
Peace-!!!

One Epic Blue and Bold Cm7(otaGBK) .----->fastforward!

Well from what I get out of the contract we all signed, it only promises us unlimited data (less if that's your plan) the is no mention on the guarantee of what speed they will provide. Thus this dictates that the only reason Verizon would offer any said speed, would only be due to competing company's offering faster speed. So, they may have the inclination to throttle speed but only to the point where they lose customers to more competitive company's.

Notice how they only plan on throttling 3g. I'm thinking its because they invested so much money on advertising the FAST 4GLTE. And if they were to throttle 4gLTE, that would really piss off some people because they are advertising 4g for only its speed not as unlimited.
