Verizon beings unlimited data throttle - Your response?

So question then, I have a 4g phone (Thunderbolt), but live in a 3g area. I also have the $30 unlimited tether plan so I pay $60 a month for total data. Since its a 4g phone but I only use 3g, do I have to worry about "optimization"?

I used 7gb last month total. My vzw data widget combines my hotspots tethering and cell data into one.

I was wondering the same thing. I am in a 3g area, and during what I would assume is a peak usage time my speeds have been terrible the last day or so. I don't know if they started the optimizing yet or not but it feels like it. But the wording on the news release says "unlimited data users with a 3g device". So, I am still just as unsure.

If you have a 4g device you are considered on a 4g data plan so you won't be affected by this even if you're not in a 4g area.

There is no such thing as a 4g or 3g data plan. There is just a data plan.

Yes I'm talking about in relation to optimization. Maybe I should have used quotes around "data plan". My point is if you have a 4g device you are not affected even if your not using 4g

I was under them impression that 3G data used on a 4G phone would count against you, but after looking again:

Does Network Optimization apply to customers using 4G services?
No. We reserve the right to include 4G LTE users later, but right now this only applies to the top 5% of users with unlimited data plans using 3G devices. If you have a 4G LTE device you will not be affected at this time.

They specifically state "device", not "plans" or "type of data consumed", so you should be fine with your tbolt on 3G.

This wouldn't do anything to the number crunching. They are looking at the top five percent users. So let's say 5 out of 100 users exceed 2gb, they are the top five percent. It doesn't matter if these five users are at 5gb, 10gb, or 20gb, they are still the top five percent and the threshold doesn't change.

I think we are in agreement here.

I was just saying that I think if the top 5 out of 100 total users were over 15 gig (instead of 2 gig) and 25 out of 100 were over 2 gig, Verizon wouldn't raise the "throttle trigger" to 15 gigs, they would instead say the new group to get throttled is the top 25%.

In other words Verizon didn't say "Okay let's throttle the top 5% which equals..... everyone over 2 gig" rather they said "Let's throttle everyone over 2 gig which happens to be...... the top 5%"

In this case, getting the top data consumers to increase their usage and lift the cap higher for everyone else wouldn't do any good(the hypothetical we were talking about to begin with, wouldn't actually happen) as I don't think the 2 gig will every change, just the % of people getting throttled.

Ive been a vzw fan for years but tiered and now data throttling are making me question for how long. With the money they pull in from these plans there should be no problem keeping the network in check.

If only sprint wasnt a downgrade im sure many would be jumping ship.

This is from the Verizon website link about the limit.

" How long will 2GB of data be the threshold? "

"We will update this number as the amount of data used by our customers changes over time. At that time, we will also update information on this website. "

I noticed that... but do you really think they would ever raise the throttle threshold considering data usage across the network as a whole is an ever increasing number and their primary goal is to get people off 3G --> 4G and off unlimited --> tiered.

I'd be hard pressed to believe that once Verizon has a strong foothold in this ground, which they do now, they will be taking any steps backward by giving more back to the unlimited users.

But that is just me and probably not even worth 2 cents, maybe 1 cents... maybe 1 Yen cent.

when i'm paying for "3G" data yes speed is involved because i was 3G speeds nothing less

You're not paying for "3G" data. You're paying for unlimited data, regardless of what speed you're getting. You'd still have unlimited data if you were in a 1X area, or if you were in a 4G area if you have a 4G phone. Unlimited data is separate from speed. There is no way any company can say "we will offer you unlimited 3G data" because the minute someone goes into a 1X zone, they'll start whining.

What they say is unlimited data at up to 3G speeds, or 4G speeds. 1X, 3G and 4G all encompass that. VZW nor any company promises any consistent speed.

The TOS that you signed when you joined said that you were paying for unlimited data. Period. In the terms, they say they will provide you that unlimited data at whatever speed they are able to. It is in the company's best interest to provide their users with as much speed as possible to maintain a good reputation and keep their customers, but they are by no means required to maintain "3G" speeds.
