verizon just sent me an update to 5.9.901

Shhhhhh, they probably read here. Don't give them any ideas! :)

Sorry mate. I tend to expect the worst after having data for only half of my phones life at this point. But meh, sun shines on a dog's ass occasionally.

At this point, I do not think a store can do it. Hang loose. With this 901 update going out by accident Moto has created a situation where they no longer know what version their customers have...some will be on 901 and some will be on 5.5.893. So I think the next update is going to have to be a full update, and that should fix up the 5.7.893 folks. Just a guess on my part.

The the store doesn't have the facilities to reflash a device after said device has been out for over 3 months, well, that just shows piss poor planning on the part of VZW/Motorola.

As for the update, they could just release 2 different patches to bring everyone up to the next official. You know, somthing like Blur_Version.5.5.893.XT875.Verizon.en.US for people on .893, and a Blur_Version.5.5.901.XT875.Verizon.en.US for people running the "accidental" OTA. I think VZW is going to do whatever they can to avoid pushing a full update OTA. The download would be absolutely huge. Probably in excess of 200MB. I don't think their update infrastructure could handle it, TBH.

My data is working 100% better. I had places in my house where i would completely lose data before and now it stays locked on not one drop since I upgraded. I had worse data drops after the 5.5.893 update than before. I am very happy with the phone on 5.9.901. I think my battery life might be better also but I not for sure on that one yet.

I know my data drops were much worse after the .893 updates too. I'm downloading the .901 now to give it a test.

A thought just popped into my head regarding those who are worried that this will take them off the update path for ICS.

I am thinking that since ICS will be a major OS release, and not a minor revision, that it may not be released as a patch update at all. A patch update doesn't seem to be a viable idea for a completely new OS. ICS may very well be a full OS. And it almost goes without saying that all of the important stuff like kernel version/etc will be older than what is contained in the update. I get the feeling that ICS will get everyone back on the update path, even if they have to install the zip manually.

Ok, I know all of the previous posts said that in order to install the 901 update/patch, you need to be running stock 893. I updated last week to 5.8.894, would I still be able to install 901 or no?

It's possible, but when we went from from Eclair to Froyo, there were 2 versions available here. One was the OTA, which was a patch, and the other was a full install. The latter was supposed to be used by Verizon in case the OTA failed; you would take the phone in and they would install it for you.

Going from Gingerbread to ICS may be different, though.

Nope. See this is why, until there is an unlocked boot loader, people should not be applying patches that are found out on the internet. There was a guy on here that said that he heard they were going 5.5.893, 5.7.894, then 5.8.894. He swore that was the upgrade path so people starting putting 5.8.894 on their phones. Now it turns out that Motorola is applying patch 5.9.901 but they are testing it. However, as you can see, its way past the 5.8.894 patch version. My advise is to just wait for the OTA and not patch random patches found on cheesecake etc.. I was burned once by patching to 5.7.894 and once i got my phone replaced by Verizon i swore off applying random patches and now im waiting on OTA patches. I will continue to do that until the bootloader is unlocked.

UPDATE!!!!

earlier in this thread I stated I was able to successfully install the 5.9.901 update (which still holds true)
however after a few hours my phone went completely bonkers on me and why it's taken me so long to reply

do not run any custom ROM's if you have taken this "update"

I have found that with a 5.9.901 kernel / radio that any system lower than that will bork your phone.

Kin3tx will not run, Liberty will not run, Eclipse will not run (I've tried them all)

I can use wifi and all that, but can not make phone calls at all (baseband shows "unknown", ERI and PRL also show "unknown")

since then I've spent the better part of last night and this morning trying to get my phone back up and running

Dhackers released and forever root = fails to install system image
RSD with full FXZ file = fails to load
fastboot via command prompt = fails as well

and since I have the newest kernel / radio and can't go back
my phone is currently sitting useless.

BEWARE!!!!!! I took the plunge and now am royally screwed :(

You might want to post that in the some of the rom threads as I have seen people ask about it or just post a link pointing to your post in this thread.

Did everything work well before you tried the custom roms, or was it after the custom roms the phone went completely bonker? I am getting a Bionic today and am concidering this update.

everything was working fine up to 5.9.901
after installing the custom ROM, that's when things went south

and since then nothing that we have available to fix problems on this phone has worked

Settings, About Phone, Syste..... Wait Wait wait... are you telling me that I can stop doing this every five minutes, 901 was pushed by mistake?

Do you have a nandroid backup of the stock system? If you do have tried to flash it in CWM recovery? If you don't, why not? Always, always, always have a nandroid backup of the stock system to fall back on!!!!
