verizon just sent me an update to 5.9.901

I am stock and updated to 9.01...then later I read it was pushed by mistake...it seems to work at least as well as last update and adds more bloat...yeah!....haven't really noticed any big difference ...hopefully I didn't introduce new problems ...staying stock does have some advantages ...unless I just hosed my phone by applying this update...

I have the update but I don't want to lose root. If I can improve the data service on my phone and keep root I will give it a go.

Make sure that you are 4ever rooted and you are good to go. I updated yesterday and kept root with no issues.

Also, from what I've read, the people that are 4ever rooted that think they lost root, haven't. All they need to do is install the superuser app from the Market

Cool...Will try it out when I get home. Fingers crossed. Is the data any better?

I was on the ota 5.5.893, forever rooted. 901 wasn't pushed to me so I downloaded it from link somewhere way back in this thread. Unfroze bloat. Manual update. Reboot. Root retained. Nothing bad has happened. Not enough time to review if anything good happened yet, but I checked SystemPanel and saw that cpu use went under 1% while idle on battery for the first time in a month!!!! This alone put a huge grin on my face!!! dancedroidAt no point recently has my cpu been under 3% at any time!!

With the exception of the widespread outage VZW had overnight, YES it is better. In just about every way you can imagine.

-Signal strength
-ability to hold onto a 4G signal
-3g/4g/wifi handoff

All of which are better with the 901 update

Anyone had any luck restoring/reinstalling their custom ROMs? I tried kin3tix but it can't recognize my baseband. Says unknown in about phone. anyone else having this issue?

All indications that I have seen concerning combining this new update and a custom ROM is that it will bork your phone.

So it's stock or bust... Wonder if a custom rom built on this build would work.

Nice tapatalk sig, maybe I should use that too! I can't leave the house, well, actually I did and just got back. Left my bionic at home, didn't want to disconnect from DROID forums, lol.

I can verify that none of the custom ROMs at this point (Kin3tx, Liberty, Eclipse) will work
if you have taken and installed the 5.9.901 update you must stay with it.
granted you have root access and still mess with things (removing or renaming bloatware and etc)
but beyond that, don't bork your phone like I did :)

That would work, i would think. I believe the reason that you cant keep new radio/baseband etc and rollback to older builds is because of the major changes in this build. I was watching the scripting and I thought it never end. They may as well of put out a full update.

I wish they would get off their collective arses and put out a full OTA update rather than randomly pushed patches.

Talking to those idiots over on the Moto support forum is useless. They know little and admit less. VZW knows nothing because the tech people obviously don't communicate with the CS people.

This handset has basically turned into a cluster , but there is nothing better on the horizon yet. It has sooooo much potential that is being strangled by VZW and Moto (im)mobility.

I applied the 901 update myself using the file that was posted on Droid Life. Will I still be able to update to official releases? or am I SOL now since the update was pulled? Can I still get ICS you think?

I have a backup from when my system was on 893. Should I revert to that, will my kernel still be stuck on the one associated with 901?

Kernel and Baseband will be the 901 ones.

Just sit tight. They will have to support your version of the Software since they "accidentally" pushed that OTA out.
