Verizon Plans to Discontinue 1-year Contracts Effective April 17

Simply put Verizon is a joke.

Then drop them and enjoy all of your dropped calls on your new network.
Sorry for the outburst but I'd be willing to bet that a VERY few people on this thread that are talking so much trash about Verizon will actually make a change. Do these changes suck...yes, but they are not doing anything different than the other carriers are doing.
I'm not happy about the changes but I'd rather be going through this with Verizon on a top notch network than dealing with it from ATT or T-Mobile.
People constantly complain about Wal-Mart but, have you ever seen their parking lot empty?
Just my two cents!
BTW, I dont work for Verizon or anything, just have been a loyal customer for 7 years now (wireless and fios). I have been on ATT and on Sprint in the past and in my area (DFW) there is no better coverage and NO better customer service than Verizon!
Hey Verizon, I'm available for commercials if you need me! ;o)

Have a good one DROID Family!!

It is exactly thoughts like that, that VZW is hoping most people will have. Pure blind allegiance does not equal informed decision making.

I used to work for them when they were Airtouch Cellular here in California and have been a customer since. My main sticking points have been the NE2, the early upgrade option, 1 yr contracts (if I wanted to), consistent service.

The thing is, most blind fanboys make the whole "Then drop them and enjoy all of your dropped calls on your new network" argument without realizing that the reality is, people are making less and less phone calls. We are a wired society, where texting, facebook, email are the new waves of communication. Aside from the occasional call to my wife or kids, I rarely spend any time talking to people unless it is in person. I'm sure a lot of you, if you gave it some hard thought, would come to the same conclusion. So, in that sense, I'll would take the "dropped calls" I am not making and pay less per month than to watch as everything I enjoyed about my telcom is slowly stripped away thanks, in large part, to a fruit phone. And I will make that decision when the time comes and it will be a very informed one.

Maybe phone calls are not important to you and if so then that's your fault you're paying a premium carrier for your plan. I on the other hand use my phone to talk to my wife and kiddo as well as for business so it is all about the quality of the product. I am NO BLIND FANBOY! I am educated on this industry and realize that as much as it sucks, things are changing, but they are changing with all carriers not just Verizon. In my opinion, "if it ain't broke then dont fix it". I will always have the phone that I want (the glory of ebay and craigslist). Verizon will never keep me from getting what I want, so I dont see the big deal.
What other carriers will keep me from doing is talking to my family and making money with their shotty networks.

Good Night DROID Family.
BTW... you dont even have a DROID! HAHA, had to throw that in there since this is droidforums.net, and you're rollin with a Fascinate. I kid, I kid! ;o) Really though, just havin fun! PEACE I'm OUT!

Eris came out the same day as the Droid I think. I really don't think they're going to bring something better. They're just finding something new that they can take away from us. I don't make very many phone calls so if Sprint continues to get good phones I'll be chunkin up the deuces to Verizon.

..since ya had to throw that in there...my fascinate is rooted and on stock froyo tyvm..and is an anDROID phone, much better than any droid in vzw's lineup currently....also, I had a droid when it came out, I got this when my wife borrowed it and dropped it in oct. So....:p

I wasn't calling you a fan boy, it was more directed toward the dumb comment made earlier. Everyone has a choice of network, yes. Not as many pretty soon which is a problem for all of us. The problem I see is how slowly but surely vzw seems intent on locking everything down tighter while, soon raising prices. Take the TBolt for example. What does that phone really offer to justify the extra $50 premium over other $200 smartphones? Limited LTE coverage? I know I know sprint charges $10 mo. Premium for wimax. They all have issues. I just don't like the look of the future as it stands.

And I am entitled to my opinion. :p

woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow ok i was gonna buy my next phone on a one year... well i guess if they're really doing unlimited everything for $50 it might be worth it to just buy the phone outright and then go month to month.

or maybe jump ship to tmobile? @_____________@

I didnt realize Sprint phones were so much cheaper. The Evo is only 450 oughtright and the Shift is only 400. That really isn't that expensive considering You can get almost that much on Gazelle and you wont have to sign a contract.

Yes you do, as do I. That's what makes these forums and this country so great!
Have a good night man! Nice debating with you!
BTW... the DROID comment was just having some fun.

I noticed that a few months ago. Shocked me. Another pro for other carriers...I know when I got me X I paid retail but had it billed to my phone account. I wound up paying it off in 3-4 months, after reading from some ppl in forums I would have to pay it all upfront by the next bill.

Verizon got kudos for that from me, made me glad to be a long time customer.

Right now LTE and building penetration is probably the only thing keeping me from leaving. I need to find out how good LTE really is for reception. I'm not thinking about leaving for policy changes per say, I just moved and AT&T works better where I am now. So I have other factors at play for my decision to stay or leave.

I would say the chance to get unlimited LTE is making me stay but I dont know... I got an upgrade right now, I could use it on the Thunderbolt and try to lock in unlimited LTE. But if LTE doesnt really have better reception its not worth it for me. Then there's the chance unlimited LTE will still be there later in the year. Or it will be gone no matter what one does.

Decisions, decisions...the messed up part is right now Verizon isnt make the decision any easier to stay with them...

I just saw that new plan detail in the forums. If they get rid of 1 year contracts and bring this plan out...hmmm. lol That would save me $80 on my bill. I didnt take advantage of the other plans they offered recently but I might do this one.

I hope whatever Verizon does they put it into place soon.

Yeah, I was kind of planning to go to 1-yr contracts. But there's a lot of whining when I suspect most people HAVE done 2-yrs.

Every time VZW changes something (or is even rumored to!) there seems to be a disproportionate amount of complaining in terms of people materially affected.

Maybe a positive side effect of this will be with less subsidy to push phones the manufacturers will start dropping retail prices faster.

Off-topic, but the $50 month-to-month is only talk and text, that doesn't include data, right? So with unlimited data, you're still looking at $80 per phone (before taxes/fees).

As of October when I got my phone, I didn't know a one-year option was available. I would have absolutely gone that route had I known... or rather... had I been informed of my options by the rep and been allowed to make a decision. I had every intention of signing *only* one-years from now on.

I have no inside connections, but I have to assume THE INCREASE IN INTEREST is what has caused this. Word has spread about one-years, maybe sign-ups have spiked because people are finally "doing the math" and figuring that a piddly $70 is definitely worth the option to upgrade 10 months sooner (month 10 versus month 20). People used to be able to do this on a two-year contract with no problem.

I'd be interested to see the one-year contract numbers for the TB. I bet they were expected only two-year contracts and that didn't happen. I'm wondering if the one-years skyrocketed and now Verizon has to do something to prevent every Tom, Dick, and Harry from getting the Bionic on a one-year.

I'd be fine paying retail, but it gets dicey when BOTH my husband and myself want the newest thing... we're no longer looking at JUST $600-700. We're looking at that... TIMES TWO! :icon_eek:

And I believe that is a prepaid plan as well.

I remember years ago when I still was with AT&T (this was back when they were still TDMA and pre-Cingular merger), I had a corporate discount. Back then, with a corporate discount, you could always upgrade and get the corporate discount price on a handset. Didn't matter how far along you were in your contract. The only thing was you had to extend your contract two years.

and so if we don't like this business model we can always try the european way...

Full pop for te device and lower bills monthly....... justsayin'
