Verizon pulls Android 2.2 "FRG01b" update for DROID 1, future updates uncertain

That rumor was denied by Google.

This may end up being the most important post ever. Does this mean no OTA 2.2 for Droid EVER? I strongly suspect gingerbread is never coming to Droid 1 (and always did suspect that). No 2.2 OTA is a huge deal to the community if it is true!

It was already noted somewhere that Gingerbread WOULD NOT make its way to the Droid 1. Something about the processor not being able to run it. Forgot where I read it, but if you do a Google search I'm sure it'll come up.

I had heard also that Gingerbread wouldn't be available for the Droid 1.

If this becomes official, I'll probably root.
Gingerbread is, reportedly, going to require a 1Ghz processor and a 512MB ROM -- twice the stock Droid 1 specs. There's no way Moto and VZW are going to try to shoehorn that onto an EOL phone. CyanogenMOD and other custom from-source ROM makers, however, are probably going to grind their teeth to nubs to get something out to us. :)

Of course this is going to encourage people to buy new products instead of running on the updates. That's the way of things. Is it intentional? Probably not. The whole update problem, coupled with the last one, shows that VZW can't handle updates (it can) and that Motorola are a bunch of schmucks (they're not) and will damage VZW's reputation in ways that will cost them far more than the relatively few extra phones they'll sell. Futhermore, VZW is banking on Motorola right now to push out the best possible phones, and if it looks like Motorola is falling behind in software development then VZW looks like a tool for betting so much on the Moto camp.

Net result is a lose-lose situation at the moment. The only way they can really pull themselves out of this with any positives is if they get it out soon and do some magic that makes it phenomenal.

Rumors of VZW's demise over this (if any are starting) are exaggerated. Motorola, however, really can't afford to lose any face. That's troubling for the future of Droid handsets the way we like 'em.

There's no question that 2.2 is coming to the Droid, but i believe that Gingerbread will not make it to the Droid...That's kinda sad for whoever is keeping their droid for 2 years..

Google came out and said none of the stuff about Gingerbread not running on droid 1 was true.

Google Shuts Down Gingerbread Rumors

On 07.02.10, In News, by Kellex

Well, Wednesday’s Gingerbread rumors have officially been shut down by one of Google’s lead Android techs. (All Droid 1 users please exhale.) In a series of tweets yesterday, Dan Morril went off about the latest Android 3.0 rumors, reminding anyone who would listen that “rumors are not official announcements” and that we all “shouldn’t believe everything we read.
Nice reminders Mr. Morril. Sometimes we all get a little too excited when news about the next Android OS is floating around in the wild. We just love us some Android baby. And man are we excited to hear that our Droid 1 will still have a chance at some Gingerbread love.
Oh and hat tip to Koush for calling out the original source immediately.
Who’s throwing the party this morning?

Should this news prove to be true, then I would fully expect to be offered an immediate upgrade path without contract penalty. I was sold a phone with base line expectations in November under a 2 YEAR contract. One announced feature was Tethering, to be delivered shortly after the first of the 2010 year. If the phone literally just deadended, then the contract just dead ended.

Well supposedly the processor can't handle it and that's what I believed but I was told I'm wrong about that. There would be a version of Gingerbread for the Droid. Who knows.

This is something I have been questioning for ages. Ever since Adobe published (and you can still see them on the Adobe site) the OFFICIAL minimum specifications for Flash as being 800Mhz for a WVGA (any less and if you have a few other apps running then Flash gets choppy something mentioned by a few here already). Moto Europe said they would get back to me over a month ago. Last week I emailed Adobe and this I emailed their PR guy who did the press release. No answer from any of them.

I'm finding this hard to beleive. I did the manual update as well and I've had nothing but a good experience with it. While the Flash player issue may be a valid one, I don't think it's any major issue that cannot be overcome. This Big Red BS will of course only push most of us to go rooted.dancedroid

The mail app might be the culprit like I read a few posts back in this thread. I'm running the latest build and have an exchange account synced; it notifies me all the time that I need to update security settings. I tap on the notification, and nothing happens - so annoying.

I don't want to stick it in anyone's face because it's a personal decision, but I am so happy to be rooted. I will decide what ROM to run, thank you very much!

By the way, flash works great and has been flawless for about a month.

Interesting point

You bring up an interesting point. If the suspicions that Big Red and Moto are really trying to reign in all the D1's because of how free sourced they are, they will no doubt do so with Dx's or D2's as bait to do so.dancedroid

Don't Believe Everything You Read

As far as my local verizon rep and the technician I talked to on the phone this afternoon are concerned, verizon HAS NO PLANS TO HALT THE FRG01B OTA!!!

This means no bug in frg01b, according to them rollout indeed started on tuesday and is continuing as planned. The technician laughed when I mentioned FRG22 and told me not to worry, "just go ahead and do the manual update to frg01b, you'll be fine". There is no problem with flash, adobe just hasn't released a final version yet, ITS A BETA!!!

I don't know why all these forums (mydroidworld/droid-life, this one even) are so insistant that we droid users get screwed over, its not that big of deal.

Well, great. This sucks. My unrooted battery life now blows after manually installing the OTA and now who knows when/if we unrooted folks will get a patch to resolve it. I put in my fully charged 2800mah Seidio battery in and in just _3 hrs_ I'm getting the red led flashing. I've never gotten the false dying reading anywhere near this quickly before and hate to think how close to dead my standard battery would be by now, esp with the temps shooting up to 98-103 F within a few minutes with facebook not even in use. Hell, I just got this replacement Droid a week ago as it is (headphone jack issue). I'm not even up for my new-every-2 til July. Frustrated as I am, I agree that Verizon would have to do something for users who got the OTA "naturally", so I doubt this will stand. All I know is that Asurion better make it possible for us to get a Droid 2 as a replacement in the near future if no new patches comes. And to think I was fully intending to root after this update whenever the ability to do so cams about. Argh!!
