*and Verizon start scratching their head, questioning whether their upcoming plans for data is really a good move*

yeah but it's t-mobile...not exactly a threat to verizon, or anything verizon has to try to emulate to retain its customers...

Too true. Although the new T-Mobile spokesperson is drawing alot of attention now, T-Mobile is starting to "seem" like a comparable service. They did start rolling 4G first, albeit not true 4G.

haha yep can't argue with that!

I dont know did yall look at what their 50 plan was. They start throttling you back after 100mb. Vzw dont start throttling until you bust the 10 gigs mark.

Oh wow, 100mb on 4G i imagine would be used up ridiculously quick...pure assumption though as I don't have a 4G phone...

Nothing I see particularly special about that plan. I pay $70 (plus tax) for 450 minutes and unlimited data on VZW. Don't text very much. That TMo plan offers me nothing, except poorer service and coverage.

The unlimited talk and text is a nice feature. Their $50 plan is basically like a $15 data plan meant for email, but I don't how slow a speed they throttle you to.

What I find interesting is the recent wave of tmobile promotion. They get a very nice package from att if this merger falls through - $3 billion cash, spectrum, and a roaming deal. While that's not exactly equivalent to the acquisition price, it would certainly be adequate to breathe new life into the carrier.

As a chemical process operator working a swing shift, I spend many nights and weekends at the plant. When things are running smooth, I use the down time to watch football or movies. I do this via tethering my droid and using sling box or netflix. I never did bother to look up how much data I was using, but I imagine it was quite a bit.

This is how I see it:

I pay for unlimited data on my phone at a hefty price. I also pay for 3 gig of service on the motorola xoom. I guess I don't see a big difference in watching slingbox on my phone than watching it on my laptop using the same application. Basically, I am doing the same thing; just on a bigger screen. I'm sure its more data usage, but not much, because its still live streaming regardless.

I wonder if someone has raw data on the difference in the amount of data used when streaming slingbox via your phone or streaming slingbox via tethering on a 15" laptop screen.

Verizon is not in it for the consumer, they are in it for the money just like we (the consumer) are always looking for a way to not pay for something that we can get for free. With the technology we have today, I just don't see a bogged down network on the horizon because of abusive tetherers on the new and improved 4g network. The developers of this technology should embrace the idea of 4g being the new "home" internet and charge a flat fee for unlimited usage just like Comcast or AT&T does for cable and DSL. I pay $63 a month for Comcast high speed internet. I know damn well it doesn't even cost half that amount for Comcast to provide me with the service. It's a sham. But I still pay for it.

Sue me if I want a little of that 300% markup back in my pocket.

The difference in data use from screen size is in the frequency and duration of use. The Internet is just a better experience on a notebook with a bigger screen, mouse, and keyboard than it is on your phone. That leads to more time spent on the Internet and more data use.

There is no way Verizon or any other mobile carrier will be able to compete with cable or DSL for home Internet price-wise. The mobile infrastructure to install, support, and maintain that is much more costly than cable, DSL, or fiber optic.

And that is precisely why they EXPLICITLY say that feature is not part of the plan and offer a that service separately at a charge.

For everyone saying you paid for this, no you didn't. Most home ISP's start at @ $30 (and actually a fairly similar speed). Mobile costs more, and is worth more to the consumer. If we had "already paid for this data" to tether, the plans would be $60 or more, not $30. It's blatantly obvious the plans were not sold as an ISP replacement and were not priced as such. Therefore, no we have not already paid for that data. Or maybe it makes more sense just to say you did not pay for mobile service for your laptop.

Or if you want to be technical, you did not pay for the service to connect a PC to VZW network. The service for which we paid and which VZW provides is connecting our phone. They do not limit the data to that service. We're not paying for data - we are not metered - we pay for mobile data service.

Again, you would think this would be obvious...it's sad that it's not.
