VZW disabling tethering apps from market

I wonder if they have kicked around a service charge per device tethered. Let's say they drop data to $25 a month for 5gb for your phone. Now they add a feature where for an extra $5 a month you can tether 1 device at a time. You want to tether your laptop? $5. Your tablet? Still just $5 more for that month. Doing both at one time would cost you $10 that month. Your monthly alotment of 5gb would be shared to your phone/comp/whatever. Just one more idea to throw out there (unless someone already said it - I didn't dig through 100 pages >_>)

I actually like this idea, but what do they do about the people with grandfathered unlimited plans?

if you want to take advantage of these new tethering options on their revamped data plans you'd sacrifice the unlimited data. so either pay $30 for unlimited data and an additional $20 (I think? I don't know what the cost to add tethering is) for tethering whatever the data allotment is, or pay $25 for 5gb of phone data plus the extra money to tether a device into that pot of data.

not if you only get charged the $5 for that month if you tether something. Even if you had to pay a flat $5 every month to tether 1 thing at a time and didn't use it that month is it really the end of the world? I mean say you pay into the 5gb per month data plan and only use 1.5gb you're still technically paying for something that you didn't use.

Reading this sure makes me glad I still have my alltel unlimited plan for my mifi. All this talk about 5gb makes me cringe. On my 6th day of my billing cycle I was already showing 12gb used.

5gb is probably normally fine for phone only but tethering needs way more.

How would this work with, say, pdanet? I've paid for the app, they just shut me down? Refund my money?

Maybe the dev refunds it, maybe not. I'm leaning towards not. Verizon will force PDAnet down and then it may or may not work anymore... If it does still work I imagine you'll be throttled to a terrible speed.

Typical.

Sadly, I agree. PDAnet could in theory just pay Verizon and have the only non-official tether app.... But I am certain that if that were the case Verizon would ask for all user info, and then charge you accordingly if you went over 5gb.

That is absurd. I use 5 gigs easily. All about the money, then they throttle back your bandwidth.

I hope you never have to upgrade to a 4g card....

Like you can't get easytether, pdanet or wireless tether simply by searching online.

I keep a copy of each on my phones SD card so i can quickly upload it whenever I wipe my data on the phone or when I get a new phone. I've emailed the file to my brother and coworkers before too.

Verizon is simply trying to close a Pandora's box and it will never be able to

Sure they can....it's called tiers and throttling.

Verizon can see if your phone is rooted and I assume if rooted they will watch and make sure you don't use more than a certain amount of data in a day. I am pretty sure that there is a threshold that puts up a red flag on your account. If you reach that threshold and are rooted, Verizon stands in a pretty decent legal position to deny you future service or throttle you down. They don't need to pull the apps per se, but they are doing it to clear the legal minefield for future litigation. It takes away the defense "well it was in the market". Once you start scouring the interwebz for apk files, you lose the ignorance defense.
