What's your favorite metal band?

Considering they're classically trained opera singers, yea, I think its safe to say they're good at what they do.

I'm amused at the whole girl = pop or whatever. I'm even more amused at ppl that judge a band without even listening to them based solely on who is singing or on how their style is classified. (Like kamelot. From what I can gather, even fans of power metal agree that kamelot is different from the rest of the genre)

I can accept that some ppl prefer growling over actual singing, to each their own. I can still dig it, but I've grown to appreciate truely talented singers, and not just metal growlers. I've always been open to various types of music. I'm as likely to listen to mozart as I am to metallica.

I guarantee you the majority of the people listening to Nightwish and Epica don't care about opera. Hell, I bet most of their fans don't even draw the link between the two genres. They just hear a woman belting her lungs out and eat it up. Ask them who RJD is, and they probably have no clue, although he helped bring that vocal style into Metal.

I like my metal with balls. And as a semi-talented growler, I can tell you it isn't something you just do and you're good at.

I guess when I think of what Metal was originally intended to be, it was shocking, evil, dark, and heavy, I don't view PM as fitting these adjectives. I've tried listening to PM. The lyrics are awful (I don't want music to play D&D to) the vocalists try to rise above and up-stage everything, it's literally the nerdy version of Metal. I think the only remotely decent PM band I've ever heard was Trail of Tears. I've listened to Nightwish, Kamelot, etc. I wrote Epica off just because of their terrible name. And yea, I'll do that. Cause your name says a lot about your band. "We're like Metallica....but EPIC!"

Yea, I'm a Metal elitist and I'm proud of it.

Have you listened to kamelot's march of mephisto? They aren't a typical d&d power metal band. I almost didn't even give kamelot a chance because of the name, but I'm glad I did. Though I can appreciate the music of other powermetal bands, I just can't really get into them. Like Rhapsody of Fire. Fantastic musicians, but I just can't really get into it.

I agree epica is a pretty dumb name for a band. But actually, its a tribute to kamelot, and their album titled epica.

I personally have really been enjoying these "symphonic metal" bands lately (or whatever you want to call them). But since I enjoy classical and metal equally, mixing the two is interesting to me. Epica seems to incorporate the classical element more than most bands of the genre. Listen to their song Cry for the Moon. The strings have a great rhythm, and you can't help but bob your head with the music.

But I love threads like this. I like hearing new (to me) bands. I see what ppl are recommending and hit youtube. If I like it, I'll go to amazon (yes I actually buy music)

Like, come to find out, sepultura is playing near me in a few weeks, and I might try to go, even though the gf is working.

The lead singer could very well have the best rock/metal voice on the planet.

...plus the female singer is super hot...

I disagree..... Jonny Craig (Dance Gavin Dance/Emarosa) or Tyler Carter (Woe, Is Me) has the best imo.

+1 to the second part though

On a more serious note. I'll call Roy Khan of Kamelot. When I get home I'll check your guys out. I'm always game for good bands with good singers.

But if we're going to go with pure vocal talent of any metal band (regardless of ppl's elitist ideas of what metal is, its still classified as metal), I call Simone Simons of Epica. Tarja of Nightwish is close.

On a side note, I love the Roy Khan/Simone Simons duets. House on a Hill might be my favorite of them.

They're both Post-Hardcoreish bands. Emarosa is more alt rock now since Jonny Graig joined. They used to be more metalcore (self titled cd will always be my favorite). I would reccomend listening to either Our Numbers or [&] Delinquints by Woe, is Me. Our Numbers has both Graig and Carter, so does Desolate (The Conductor).

+1 to basically all of that.
The first Kamelot song I heard was The Haunting with both of them and it instantly hooked me. I like mostly the darker stuff but there will always be some Symphonic Metal on my ipod. Best Symphonic Metal imo is Dream Theater, Kamelot, and Symphony X. The newest Within Temptation cd is really good too though.

THANK YOU, I'm so against female vocalists especially for like hardcore or screamo or mostly heavy ass metal like it makes them look butch and they clearly can't do vocals like a male they don't have what guys have to do it im sorry I'm all for Guy vocalists that's it. Girls go get hit at an carnifex show :)

Hmm.....metal.....I am going to have to go with Tool (Aenema, Sober, Scism, 46+2), Korn (Freak on a leash, Falling Away, Brick in the wall), Marylin Manson (too many to list), Nirvana (too many to list), Godsmack (Voodoo, Keep Away, Stay Away), RATM (How I could just kill a man, and a few more), SOAD (seriously....a lot), Rammstein (too many to list), Audioslave (Like a Stone), and a little Alice in Chains (Rooster)<==classic, Pantera (Hostile) <== for the heavy....I can keep going.....Disturbed, Suicidal Tendencies, NIN, Primus, Helmet,

But if I could only pick one it would be Tool.

Sorry if my list isn't considered metal. But am kinda versatile with my music so I like all different kinds.....except that hipster crap ;) But then again I live in Portland (for the past 2 years) and can't stand all the hipsters, tree huggers, activists that are active about being active and actively promoting their activism, can't stand the bikers (want to be treated like cars then start communicating with them), and the whole attitude of "I don't have a car and neither should you".....I HATE YOU PEOPLE. They all try so hard to be "unique" and "different" that they are all the SAME!

ok....sorry....had to get that out. I am sure it's the born and raised in So Cal (L.A.) boy in me that feels this way.

Last to list.....Apocalyptica.....I know....not metal....especially heavy....but they brought back Metallica's hits with a whole new twist

Sorry again for the rant.

I think I love you, hahaha. For the most part, I'm not a big fan of female vocalists in Metal, as I've stated, but there's a few exceptions. It takes a lot for a female vocalist to be in a Metal band and be feminine, because it's a male-dominated genre.

In This Moment is excellent, Maria can sing and scream amazingly well, I'll be seeing them May 5th here in Madison.

The Project Hate MCMXCIX uses a male growler and a female clean vocalist.

Arch Enemy is gross. Angela (that's her name, right?) is ick. I think she's butch as can be.

I'm agree with everything you just said. God damnit hipsters make me sick, personally, I've had to be around a bunch, & they are the main reason I don't go to shows anymore. Like wtf do they think they're doing coming to a metal show with their ***** tight cut off jeans & tom shoes, this isn't a myspace get together. Lol & fixies? Seriously wth haha. I could go on. I'm just glad your one of the many against that bullcrap. Hippies can go rot in Satan's hole. The end.

Lol well shucks, haha I'm flattered. I personally it takes talent to be a good vocalist. Some people strain their vocal cords trying to sound like motionless in white or I declare war & don't even come close to it. Idk I have my opinions, I'm sure I could write for days lol.
