Considering they're classically trained opera singers, yea, I think its safe to say they're good at what they do.
I'm amused at the whole girl = pop or whatever. I'm even more amused at ppl that judge a band without even listening to them based solely on who is singing or on how their style is classified. (Like kamelot. From what I can gather, even fans of power metal agree that kamelot is different from the rest of the genre)
I can accept that some ppl prefer growling over actual singing, to each their own. I can still dig it, but I've grown to appreciate truely talented singers, and not just metal growlers. I've always been open to various types of music. I'm as likely to listen to mozart as I am to metallica.
I guarantee you the majority of the people listening to Nightwish and Epica don't care about opera. Hell, I bet most of their fans don't even draw the link between the two genres. They just hear a woman belting her lungs out and eat it up. Ask them who RJD is, and they probably have no clue, although he helped bring that vocal style into Metal.
I like my metal with balls. And as a semi-talented growler, I can tell you it isn't something you just do and you're good at.
I guess when I think of what Metal was originally intended to be, it was shocking, evil, dark, and heavy, I don't view PM as fitting these adjectives. I've tried listening to PM. The lyrics are awful (I don't want music to play D&D to) the vocalists try to rise above and up-stage everything, it's literally the nerdy version of Metal. I think the only remotely decent PM band I've ever heard was Trail of Tears. I've listened to Nightwish, Kamelot, etc. I wrote Epica off just because of their terrible name. And yea, I'll do that. Cause your name says a lot about your band. "We're like Metallica....but EPIC!"
Yea, I'm a Metal elitist and I'm proud of it.
