Wireless Moot

The exe is an installer. If you get just that and run it, it'll create a new 246 directory with the update zip, the boot.img, and the recovery.img. You would then put the update zip on your sdcard-ext, reboot into recovery, flash it, wipe the cache, reboot, and you're done. Those already on 905 have it easy....the updates are DESIGNED for 905. It's only when you're on an update and you need to move forward that the HoB is required.

Ok...that makes sense thanks.

I am confused by the other poster that mention he would rather use the HOB as a safety net, how is using the HOB from 905 safer than using the sdcard-ext?

I have a laptop that runs Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. I have a feeling my desktop is gonna work. A feeling, I tell ya. A feeling.
Yeah, I was just a bit concerned because it seems like your PC likes to corrupt downloads from time to time, mine did that shortly before the hard drive crapped the bed.

I want to be guarenteed that my ICS update will be the final version, that I'm on the OTA path, and that I don't screw up my phone in the process. And I also would prefer it to be an easy, seamless process just like my dad's Droid 4 when it was updated to ICS from GB. While HoB sounds pretty nice, it doesn't guarantee anything and everything. And as mentioned before, it really is just a leap of faith when you use it. I'm excellent with computers, but I'm still very new when it comes to smartphones and tablets.

ok we get it, you don't want to try one of the leaks, you want to wait for the OTA. NOTHING is guaranteed on this, although if you have been paying attention, if something goes wrong Sam is able to help (as long as you have read the FAQ) If you aren't comfortable trying the leaks then don't, just stop telling us over and over again that you don't want to do it. No one is forcing you to try anything.

Yeah, but no. I'll use the HoB, thanks. It's that potential safety net I want. I'm all for taking a risk with my phone but I'd rather mitigate it just a bit.

Nothing against HOB or Sam but if you're stock 905 unrooted than HOB is no safer than the STOCK recovery flash built into the phone.

A few things. First, I flash system, preinstall, webtop, and the boot img of the update you're installing. This gives you a sort of fresh start in some ways. Any custom mods you may have made that would cause the update to fail assertions would be corrected. This includes forever root hacks, bootstrap recovery, any modifications to the preinstall partition, webtop hacks, etc. All fixed by the HoB without losing data. Second, ensuring the HoB works NOW will give him a safety net should he brick. If you just install 246 and you screw up your phone, what do you do then? Pray that you can get the HoB to work while panicking with a bricked phone? Not a good idea.

Make sure you're on USB 2.0 ports.

Yep. My desktop is USB 2.0 only (it's four years old), and my laptop has 1 USB 3 and two USB 2 ports.

Okay, so here's an update: RSD is up, Status says "1/6 flash system "system.img" and it seems to be writing. Shall I give a little "woop" for success so far?

Be exited when it's all done :) cautious optimism.

Yea, it's a bit premature to start celebrating. It's certainly better. :)

I understand that I can just directly install the update, but it's also exposing me to the HoB in case I need it in the future. I am rooted on .905 (for backups and some connectivity stuff, mainly), and I will be rooted on ICS. But you are right, I could just install the update.

Phew!!! After reading through around 130 pages, I'm finally caught up.

As I understand it:
1. There is a shortage of bacon.
2. .246 will almost certainly be the OTA.
3. Or is it .247....NO! Damn unicorn.
4. Intel > AMD
5. A. VZW makes people angry.
B. VZW will allow moto to control all updates for a flagship phone!
C. VZW will not charge extra monthly for dev phones!
D. Bigger fines for a VZW delay on OTA updates.
6. SamuriHL is getting crazy fast video conversions. I am really jealous. My conversions avg 2 hours.
7. There is now a thread for user name origins.
8. The HOB will you unf*** your phone on the later leaks in nearly every situation. Ask SgtMjrD...he bricked two phones in a half hour and for kicks bricked a third one.
9. Also, a bra serves as a secondary phone holder for women.

Seems like over that hundred pages I might have picked up more....oh well.
