You Will Be Forced Off Unlimited If You Try To Buy A Phone Full Price At A Corporate Verizon Store

I absolutely agree with you there. I'm sure I'll have to do the same, eventually.... but until that time comes, I'll continue to ride it out. The good thing is, we do have options. We may not always like those options, but we have them nevertheless. [emoji2]

I have two simple questions for you...

1) What are the actual numbers that VZW invests in infrastructure each year? Have you looked at their annual report, and do you know what their true margins are?

Financial Statements for Verizon Communications Inc. - Google Finance

apparently last year revenue was 127 billion gross profit was 77 billion net income was 9 billion (down from 11 billion the year before)

I couldn't specifically find a breakdown of how much is put into infastructure and how much is operation of stores... problem is this also includes fios/home phone etc... verizon as a whole not just verizon wireless

2) Regardless of whether they could offer unlimited or not and stay profitable... Why do YOU feel that you are entitled to them doing that? Personally, why do you feel that they SHOULD do that, apart from the obvious fact that "you want it"? What is their motivation to do so?

ok... I'd keep it short, simply put verizon has the biggest network, the best coverage, and they've become complacent, their sitting on their laurels because they can.

what verizon fails to realize it that just because you're at the top now doesn't mean you'll be there forever.

offer unlimited data, don't offer it for $30 a month anymore... $90 $100 that would be fair, especially with the price of current plans it would be in line with what I already pay.

now by offering unlimited data again you tmo and sprint have nothing "over" verizon... they can't say... we offer unlimited and verizon doesn't.

is the cost of service with vzw higher? sure it is... like anything in life, you get what you pay for.. and people will pay for better service. having unlimited data will help keep verizon on top. that should be important to both the company and the shareholders

I'm an odd duck I know. But I did save 15% on my car insurance by making waffles this morning.

Don't ask, it's a complex process! [emoji41]

As an update, I ended up just buying a used LG G4 on swappa. It should be here monday. After thinking about all of this I am a little worried. I was able to get in on a glitch 2 years ago when I bought the Note 3 which allowed you to buy the Note 3 on contract at the subsidized price without changing your plan. It also extended my contract 2 years. This locked in unlimited data for me for those 2 years. That contract expires in October. They could take away my unlimited at any point.

I think in a nutshell, those that are expressing their dissatisfaction with losing their UDP's, are angry because we (I no longer have it) were told we could keep it as long as we played by the rules set forth, and then the rules changed, and again, and again.
The fact that when they offered it while the system was 3g shouldn't really matter. It was an agreement, and they should have to honor the agreement.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but if my memory serves me, they even advertised on television saying you could keep your plan as long as you didn't change it.

Thanks for the update. I think you'll be ok DMX. Especially since you'll just be swapping sim cards.

hopefully it does work out... I'm going to be getting the new moto pure and... having complete control of my device will be nice... not having to wait on Verizon for updates will be nice as well

The cellular companies are also paying broadband/connect fees for each user...was @ $3 about five years ago. Capacity has increased, but so has usage so call it a wash.

So if that's based on, say, 2 gigs average per user, the person chewing up 20GB on unlimited is really some multiple that implies a marginal cost @ $30. Now, VZW isn't paying any more, but if everyone increased data 10X they would be paying something like $20 per user instead of $3. Saying it doesn't cost VZW anything more is technically correct, however practically speaking higher use means the next round of contract talks the cable companies want more for that higher use.

And traveling my phone can easily burn thru 10GB+ a month without tether....just because my phone is set-up to auto-download a ton of news feeds. But there's no question I use more data when I tether, because I prefer the laptop and would otherwise not consume that content on my phone....which is why the policy for unlimited prohibited tether.

Ok, good. Now ask yourself this... Knowing that VZW is greedy and only cares about the bottom line, market share and revenue...

If doing what you ask would increase market share by removing the only competitive advantage from the other carriers, which while lower margins, would be made up for in sheer volume... Why wouldn't they do that?

These are pretty smart people, all things considered. If doing what you asked would do what you say, I would expect that they would have done that already, in the interest of profit.

you answered your own question.

greed

The potential profit from tiered data and overages outweighs the gain in marketshare. They have nothing else to charge us overages with, unlimited SMS unlimited Minutes... no unlimited data. until there's a new feature they can charge us for on our mobile phones data is the gold mine.

They can charge late fees.. disconnect and ETF... but compared to data overages and tiered data plans the amount is absolutely minuscule

It's that well known corporate CYA. The competition can easily match any VZW offer. So why take the risk that they may not get the volume to justify the change.
