after using Google Voice for a few months, if the "voice to text" uses the same transcription engine Voice does, then I'd do better to have my dog walk on the keyboard for me.

Have you ever had a left a message for a friend with google voice trying enunciate clearly, knowing it was being transcribed? Ever gotten a voice mail from an automated system? Those transcriptions are usually pretty close to perfect. Having used 2.1 (at least on the Nexus One) a few times, I can tell you if you make a reasonable effort to speak clearly, it does a really good job. Google Voice fails b/c people aren't trying to speak for a transcription (not that they should need to, but I'm defending the engine, not the service).

Is that the easiest solution in the world? No. It should just pick up your normal voice. But as far as using it instead of typing, there are still plenty of times where talking in a slow and clear voice is easier than typing, and it works like magic in those cases.

Well, my voicemail message doesn't currently have a "your message will be transcribed, please speak slowly and with as little accent as possible" disclaimer in it. I suppose I could add it but that seems a bit akward. :)

If nothing else, it can be VERY entertaining to read the transcriptions. I don't think I've had one yet (out of hundreds) that was entirely accurate unless it was a simple "call me back".

I have used other transcription tools on the PC and I can say that Google Voice is less accurate than PC transcription tools were in their infancy more than a decade ago. It's also the only one I've used that I didn't have to pay for however. I still use it and like it but I wont deny that it has a long way to go in terms of accuracy.

So what's the general consensus is ck getting inside info or believing boy genius. Is that vzw's official twitter if so then maybe noone got the update on this site. Let's wait till midnight maybe it will get rolled out still.

When I used the HTC voice it is nearly perfect compared to the Handcent one.

Absolutely, some transcriptions are just plain hilarious. Like the shopping list my wife left me, the transcription said something about hookers and funerals.

Why're people talking about voice transcriptions in a 2.1 release thread? And i don't think i believe that vzw twitter.... it only has (>)1000 followers....

...yes... and the first phase of the rollout was to 1000 phones... coincidence? I THINK NOT!

Wow, and I thought my ex was open minded. :)

Ya, I've had a few that had my sides and cheeks aching from laughter. The most fun is trying to determine what was actually said without playing the recording. Some of the mixups baffle me as to how the transcription arrived where it did.
