2.1 on the DROID - an early view

just a quick question I was wondering if someone can explain why the need for 5 screens is so important? I can't find enough quality apps/widgets to warrant filling the first screen, much less more than three. I'm new to the droid community (and this forum), but not the app community. I switched from the iphone and so far, the market has really disappointed me and most "best apps" threads I find on this or other web sites are the same 7 or 8 apps. I don't mean to hijack the thread but if someone could give me any explanation for this I'd appreciate it.

My three homescreens are packed, and I've needed to drop a few of the widgets I want on there. When I used Home++ with 7 screens, I also included some pictures of friends and other things, which has an appeal to me. But there definitely isn't enough room for all the widgets I want.

YMMV

I didn't read the entire post but I'm sure everyone is *****ing about not having 2.1. I have a reliable source that said they are planning on pushing 2.1 to the droid 3rd week in March. Please don't flame me or ask my source. I can tell you my source is someone high up in the industry. Leave it at that. I know most of you are not going to believe me but just wait till the end of the 3rd week this month before you start talking trash.

I'm not into flaming people, even if I don't agree / believe them. That said, I don't have a problem with someone saying they have a source and we are getting it 3rd week of march......I mean hey, what is it hurting really? I can ignore it, believe it, whatever.......but it's not hurting me. If the guy didn't post this and we do get the update 3rd week of March, and then he says "I knew it was coming then" we wouldn't believe that either....so it's kinda a lose / lose situation when you are the poster, but I personally don't have a problem with it.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I'm not trying to piss people off. I just got some info the I BELIEVE TO BE CORRECT. You don't need to believe me, trust me, love me, hate me, ANYTHING!!!! I just wanted to put it out there for the people that are looking for info.

Pictures of my kids, my wife, beautiful widgets, some calender widgets, power and memory widget, etc... etc.. there are tons. I can fill five screens very easily. Pandora widget, music widget...

I could use several more...have 1 filled with various gps, navagation, maps, ect.....1 with internet, email, facebook, ect....and 1 with communication, messages, ect....could use another for sports, ect, ect.

I know this has been asked before, but I've seen multiple, varying answers. I've been on the fence about rooting for a while now. I don't want to have to set up all of my desktop icons, bookmarks, settings, preferences, etc. all over again, then possibly again when 2.1 is released, and a 3rd time when 2.1 root is gained. If I root now, and install BB or whatever other ROM, what, if anything, will I have to replace, set up again, etc.?

It depends on how you go about it. If you use Pete's BB ROMs or any kind of nandroid-based ROM, yes, you will most likely have to wipe your phone to factory.

However, if you use a tarball ROM like DroidMod 1.0 or then you won't lose any data whatsoever. In fact, with DroidMod, it will backup your phone before adding in all the hacks, so if you want to go back to root it's easy. They have an app you can download on their site that will root, apply a recovery image, and then backup and apply their ROM. It's just about the easiest way to get root and 2.1 apps and other hacks.

Personally, I agree w/those who believe we'll get the update once the Nexus one is released, if not afterwards. Verizon knows by holding off It'll only be more profitable for them.

Since we have not seen 2.1 yet, I will believe we are getting it when I see the "update" prompt on my phone. Until then, it's like it doesn't exist.

I would like to believe the 3rd week of this month, but, nah..... I was at a VZW store a week ago to replace my Droid and the "Droid Expert" at their store had no idea when 2.1 was coming. That is probably the most accurate thing yet from a VZW employee.

So, yeah... wake me when it gets here..

That's the honest truth. They don't have any idea it's coming until maybe 24 hours before it's released if that.

I have a very good relationship with my local store manager - he told me "truthfully - I get more information, and much sooner on droidforums.net and androidforums.com than what trickles down to us through corporate"! He is every bit as exasperated as we are anxiously waiting for 2.1 to come down the pike. They have regional meetings - all news of updates seem to be either hushed or vague at best. The one thing he stressed though is that when they do get any news sent (to store managers) it can be taken as gospel. In other words - no "rumored" events. Perhaps arriving late - but the day he tells me 2.1 is coming - that's a date you can "take to the bank"... :) mike

My guess is that they are simply testing it very thoroughly rather than trying to release it at a special time. I'm sure we'd all rather have a stable release than a buggy one. We can already get buggy ROMs. :)

Verizon doesnt make anything off the phone, it's the plans. So explain why they would wait..

I think it's because Verizon are the one's who deal with the customer complaints. If 2.1 has glitches, Verizon deals with it. If the phone is not up to par with it's consumer, it could cause customers to leave their network. The general public has no idea where 2.1 is coming from. Everything falls back on Verizon, except maybe some people thinking that Moto phones are junk if it's glitchy.

My point is that is has nothing to do with the Nexus 1.

Those who love to make up conspiracy theories without thinking them through just are irritating.

Verizon makes 100% of their money off of plans. They have no incentive at all waiting for the Nexus 1 before updating the Droid.

If in fact the Droid will have live wallpaper and all of the Nexus 1 features then why would they wait when they could be signing up more people now.

IMHO the delay is to get the bugs out - that's it.
