246 update on QA server now.

straight from google servers. still has to get approval i believe (someone correct me if im wrong, i wont be offended)

If it still has to be approved thats lame. I love that my nexus 7 will get updates very fast, i want a phone that is the same.

Question, why doesnt the play store offer the verizon version of the nexus?

I'm predicting early to mid-October. Mostly because the builds that we have now are nearly FLAWLESS, and Verizon has a contract agreement with Google/Motorola stating that their phones will be eligible for software updates 18 months after their release. It has only been a year, so they have to comply to that. That, in combination with the flawlessness of 246, should give them NO REASON to disapprove ICS for the Bionic at this point.

its why i think next week... and something Mr. Soni +1 on G+ that stated something about it releasing next week as it was Q4. obviously thats not confirmation but, its still a bit sneaky if it was. haha

Just claims some other bug is a show stopper. Trust me, if VZW can hold back an update for Flash they can easily keep finding bugs for the next 6 months if they want. Motorola knows this, that's why they're putting their foot down. At some point this game has to stop.

Motorola just doesn't like the fact that to the average consumer "Motorola phones aren't updated". Those of us that are phone junkies know better. But for everyone else, they'll buy a new phone when they hear that their friends bought other phones and they were upgraded. Let's face it. 2 months ago the forum was still disagreeing as to who was to blame. Various people kept going back and forth. But now it's pretty squarely pointed at VZW. But VZW won't admit they're holding up progress.

If you go to a VZW store and asked I'm sure they'd say something like "updates are the responsibility of your phone manufacturer". Whoops! See what they did there?

The defunct 244 thread discussed this a little. Even with an unlocked bootloader you're still at the whims of VZW to provide updates. Even the Samsung Nexus isn't getting updates at lightning speeds. There really isn't any phone you can buy that you can get quick easy updates and avoid the hassles we are getting. You can try to live by ROMs though, but even then I have yet to see a ROM work really well with no "big deal" bugs on any of my phones.

At least, that's what I got from the thread. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

That's what is mainly being regarded as one of Androids biggest weaknesses.

Thanks to Sam for sharing this informative article:

If you think back to when the iPhone originally launched, and Apple decided to go with AT&T, even though they (Apple) would have preferred to launch with VZW due to their superior network at the time.

The main sticking point was who would have ultimate control over the phone's software. With every other phone up to that point, VZW had the final say (and still does with almost all phones today). But, Apple was not willing to budge on that, insisting that they (the manufacturer), not the carrier, has the final say on software. VZW was not willing to budge. AT&T was. We know how the rest went down.

Now, it seems that google is pushing for the same game plan. They know that VZW will make exceptions (they did with Apple). They also know that VZW is in somewhat of a tight spot if Moto walks away. They can just push more iPhones, but they cost carriers significantly more in subsidies that most Androids. Samsung is still around, but their future got a little murky with the recent legal proceedings. The rest of the Android manufacturers just aren't keeping up to the level of Samsung & Moto.

I, for one, would love to see VZW's grip on handsets loosened, even if just a little more. Moto seems to be playing hardball, and they should.

I think VZW might think long and hard before they bank on the Iphone as it's mainstay...don't know how sales were over the last few days, but I remember seeing reports that sales weren't as strong as projected. Of course, they always have Samsung..but I'm pretty sure all Manufacturers are watching all things Cellphone related , not just patent complaints, looking for ways to get there ball$ back from the carriers.

I couldn't agree more. The carrier is, by definition, the provider of the means to access services on the network. Using this definition, the carrier is NOT the device and software provider. The carriers' networks should be "device agnostic".

I could be mistaken(not an Apple fan) but I've heard that even with AT&T there have been some updates that were pushed to the rest of the world and AT&Ts updates came a couple of months later. I want to say I had heard that when iphones got built-in tethering it was also held up for a while by AT&T.
