Android 2.1 Update Rolls Out For Motorola Droid!

I downloaded the helix launcher off the app market and it works great for anyone wanting more home screens. Really user friendly as well for someone like me who isn't a smartphone pro.

One question... Is this the same 2.1 that nexus has? because their 2.1 seems soo much better.

It isn' t the same 2.1 (the Nexus has more home screens and the 3D app drawer), but it is based on the same 2.1 code. I use Helix for more home screens and don't care abut the 3D app drawer (although Helix2 does have it) so I am happy with the update.

I did a search in market place for helix2, nothing came up.
questions:
Do I have to be rooted to use helix2?
Will helix2 work with the new 2.1?
Where can I get it?
Thanks
It's in there as helixlauncher2 but when I tried it all it did was forceclose. I read it was only for the Nexus One but I'm not really sure. Maybe someone else can chime in that knows for sure

I'm seriously considering it. I've had some weird issues with my Droid lately and would like a fresh start. I'm the kind of person that's always reformatting their computer, though. I searched the forums and didn't really find detailed information about what data disappears and what data I should back up. I guess it will be a crapshoot. I just hope that Swype works after the reset and that my game stats aren't all wiped out. Thanks!

As long as you have been backing up your data to google's servers (under privacy settings, it will restore a lot once you factory reset. But you will have to re-setup your google account info, etc, and reinstall apps that the backup doesn't catch. Your paid apps will be linked under downloads in the market.
I can't seem to find "I Music Tao" by Green code. Every other paid app was under the download section. Do you or anyone know how I can get my paid app back?

On topic, congrats to all who got the update.

That's because they pulled that app renamed and making you pay for it all over again. Its neo music now. Bunch of crooks!

Yes, I'm happy. I was happy with 2.0.1. As far as Flash goes, it's still coming. People are just so impatient.:)

Since everyone seems to forgot, here is what comes with 2.1:

It isn't impatience. People replace their phones every year or two... most of us more frquently. The phone was advertised to have Flash support and a promise of end of Q1 was given for it. Today is the last day of Q1, and it's not here. I don't want to wait until Im ready for a new phone to get Flash support for the Droid. It's really not all that complex of an issue. I don't like it when promises aren't kept. Espeically when my money is involved.

Lack of 3 home screens bugs the piss out of me, but it's not anything they've ever promised. Live wallpapers are also not an issue for me, so I'd have rather they worked on the former than the latter. Rotating desktop as well. The other aspects of this update are great. I think I'm going to wait for a DroidMod release of it though.

I honestly can't recall if I ever saw an ad for the Droid that mentioned Flash, but I do know that - since back in December - Adobe has stated, in word and video, that Flash will be available this year, probably by mid-year.

You really can't say that Moto/VZW/Google broke a promise about Flash, when it's not their call.

I read about the apps for more home screens. That's fine I suppose, but I'm always hesitant to have a replacement launcher/home screen because it runs on top of the other, so now you're running both simultaneously and even if it doesn't, I feel like it'll cause issues. Especially with Helix and live wallpaper. Now you're using their app to run LW instead of the built in stock version. Which will run faster/smoother with less issues. Probably the stock. The ultimate Droid for me would be to have this update with it's enhancements, flash, 5-7 home screens, lockable icons on the bottom of the homescreens, double tap to jump to homescreens, rooted with superuser, busybox, a kernel allowing overclocking and wifi tethering at a low voltage with a 150mhz low and 800mhz (or 1000) high, and wifi tethering installed. Go to work Devs! ;)

Now I'm worried bigtime this could be a hoax, the Verizone twitter page is saying this isn't an official update over and over again:

VZW Support (VZWSupport) on Twitter

An elaborate hoax that involved creating a fully functional 2.1 update for the Droid and putting it on Google's servers?

Verizon is just upset that they're inability to execute this upgrade in a timely manner has caused them to lose all control.

If you read those tweets it's obvious that they're being posted by some anonymous public relations employee who has absolutely no clue.

Q1 has been mentioned time and time again in releases, on web pages (droiddoes), official statements, etc.

Oh God PLEASE don't start this again..:icon_eek:

Actually Verizon lost all control when they agreed to sell Android phones, because they aren't crippled like other VZW phones they sell.

And the guy answering the Twitter account for them is just a patsy for the company. If VZW had their way, any update would severely restrict how the phone works. We'd be back to the old horror days of getting everything through MyVZW and crap like that.:)
