Android: The new king of the mobile castle

its like talking to a brick wall haha...i have never denied that apple is on a decline, nor have i said that android is not going to eventually sell more then apple. what i've stated (time and time again) is that there is a reason why apple is on a decline and why android will end up selling more. and the reason is that android is more available then iphone at the moment. iphone is limited to one (crappy) network, whereas android stretches across every network in the US practically and is selling in exponential numbers due to how many different ways there are for someone to own an android smartphone. a bum on the street could predict that android would have better sales figures then iphone, and that android will be the top seller in a couple of years. no one is arguing that, but please don't try to convince me that android is going to dominate or crush iOS, because its not.

my point (which you continue to miss...or ignore) is that the iphone on VZW is going to be given some of the most preferential, fanboyish treatment the world has ever seen. the marketing is going to be ridiculous, the hype is going to be unmatched...haha, not to sound dramatic, but are you comprehending what a VZW iphone means? the iphone is the holy grail of phones (please, please don't deny this, because you are lying to yourself). when it joins up with the holy grail of US mobile networks, you're suggesting that the effect on other companies is going to be marginal..at best?

it makes no sense what you're arguing. you're best argument was that the galaxy line (a line of 5 phones) only has 5M sales? really? come on...

theres no point in arguing...lets just wait and see when or if the iphone even comes to verizon haha

What I meant was they're not going to do an all out media blitz if the iphone comes (and they will do one) and then try to convince people to get a droid when they come in for the iphone. Naturally LTE is going to be pitched, when the time for it to be pitched comes. Do you think VZW is going to run iPhone ads in parallel to LTE ads? No way. If the iPhone comes to VZW their first order of business will be to milk as many sales out of that as possible. Not throw it to the side and say "you could get that iPhone, but check out LTE!!"...no chance.

You do realize VZW doesn't make a penny on the phones and, in fact, subsidizes the purchases?

They are selling the service. LTE is their baby. Everyone who comes in that store is going to learn about LTE. "Yes, here is the IPhone....No, it doesn't work on LTE". It's up to the consumer what they want then, but VZW has ZERO incentive to push either phone over the other. But they WILL tell everyone about LTE, and that will be a drawback for the IPhone.

Haha I need to go to your corporate store...I've never once had any verizon rep try to talk me out of a purchase...in fact I've never even had a rep try to sell me anything period. Maybe I don't give the average consumer enough credit. Maybe they will go in there knowing what lte is and not get an iphone no matter what...haha guess we'll

Baffling how some people think. in Q2 2010 there were 20+ android devices available for purchase overseas and 10.6million (give or take) have been sold? Whereas there is ONE iPhone and 8.7 million have been sold overseas. How are you not realizing what the means?? How can you possibly be saying that that is a true apples-to-apples comparison (pun intended). There are TWENTY android devices vs. ONE apple device and they're only separated by less then 2 million units sold.

Is Apple going to open IOS to other cell manufacturers? Isn't the IPhone on VZW still going to be 1 device?

When you look overseas, neither IOS nor the IPhone is enough to prevent people from buying Android phones. Carrier has been taken out of the equation in that comparison. It's still going to be the same IOS and IPhone on VZW, still one device.

If IOS were distributed and there were phones from Samsung, Moto, LG, etc. running it, then you might have a point. Although IPhone is the best aesthetically, so people choosing Android over it are doing so on specs and/or because they favor Android over IOS.

What you are seeing is people having a choice making informed decisions are choosing Android in droves and growing. Despite IPhone's "superiority" and "insane trendiness", international buyers with the choice are choosing Android in greater numbers.

i tend to disagree with that assessment. you think the "we've got a map for that" ad campaign was ruthless, just wait until VZW has the iPhone! if VZW just wants to sell the service, what better way to go after AT&T than to point out that VZW also has at&t's primary phone?!

i think it's going to be tricky to push the iphone, and push LTE at the same time. but, given the ad campaigns in recent memory, i imagine they'll figure it out... ;)

They absolutely can't push both at the same time and it's ridiculous to think that the iphone coming to verizon is going to be thrown on the backburner in favor of lte. The ad campaign for a verizon iphone is going to be in the hundreds of millions...verizon is not stupid enough to try to convince people to get lte over the iphone when the iphone first comes out...are you kidding me?

Trust me the iphone is going too be their baby long before lte gets a push (assuming the iphone does come out early next year)

for the immediate future, i think you're right, cuz there won't be much of a selection for LTE capable phones. what i envision happening is that VZW is going to push the iphone like crazy for the first quarter of 2011, and get the "mad rush" of people locked in for 2 years. then they'll start rolling out all the LTE superphones we've been hearing rumors about, and start pushing that. then, probably around the end of 2011, for holiday season, they'll come up with an LTE capable iphone... just a hunch.

Its the only thing that could make any sense. There's only three options: push them together, push them separately, or don't push them at all. Clearly the second option option is the only option. Does anyone really believe they're going to get an iphone and then try to sell lte?? Makes no sense from a business perspective, from a financial perspective and a common sense perspective.

...especially if they want to bury at&t - and, for whatever reason, it is my perception that they do ;)

The only thing I have to say to that...how long has the iPhone been out....now....when did Android really become popular...

The iPhone's been out since 2007. Android didnt really become popular until 2009. The iPhone had a head start for being a household name..

For it to barely outsell the iPhone in that fast amount of time says alot for Android....

Where did I say the VZW rep would try to talk you out of a purchase? People go in, they look at phones, VZW rep tells them about features and options. And, oh, they WILL be talking up their LTE service. That's merely presenting an option. If the user chooses the slower 3G because they want an IPhone that's their business.

VZW won't have to push the IPhone at all. Jobs and Apple will take care of that. And most likely VZW stores won't be selling the IPhone.

But, to the point, there's nothing tricky about pushing LTE and the IPhone. VZW isn't going to "push" the IPhone, they are pushing their services. You want an Iphone, great we got that. You want super fast data? Great, we got that, too.

VZW has zero incentive to convince someone to buy IPhone or Android. The speed of LTE is also their biggest draw. When a potential customer walks thru the door they aren't going to say "would you like the IPhone", they're going to show you how blazing fast LTE is. Oh, sorry, IPhone isn't LTE. They're only interest is to sell you the data service, and LTE is the biggest hook out there.

The new Android phones running LTE will have the 'wow" factor. IPhone won't have that until it has an LTE capable device on VZW.

I'm sorry, when does IOS become available on more than 1 device? You're argument is a non-starter. It will be the same device on a different carrier, no different than internationally where Android is taking chunks of market share.

Again, given the design of the IPhone is about the best out there, the fact that Android is outselling it, in fact, indicates IOS isn't as hot as you're making it out to be. The sales trends indicate hardware matters and/or many buyers consider Android a better OS because internationally where carriers offer a choice of the two IPhone is losing.
