Battery life

I unplugged 11 hours ago after doing the phones first full over night charge, and I am down to 80% left to go before empty. For me that seems more than adequate for the minimal use I had on the phone today, just a bunch of texting, good number of emails, two phone calls about 5 minutes each, checked FB and Twitter a few times both from the website, WIFI on the whole time, GPS and bluetooth off the whole time, and Beautiful Widgets updating every hour. The highest one on my list is the WIFI then the Android OS is following that up.

Oh so your using the ones I listed minus the background data sync? I was actually contemplating adjusting mine to that. Unfortunately, i do not have WIFI at work so its on the battery saver rule that I listed above is active alot. However, when I do turn my phone on, obviously the syncs start happening and I'm wondering if just leaving on the background syncs will be better. As it is now, the phone seems to want to sync everything once I turn it on, and might be draining unecessary battery. This includes the social applications even though I set them for 4 hr intervals. I am going to try and just have just the cellular data disabled and keep the synching on tomorrow. I am getting a solid 13 hrs on average, had it since Thursday, above smart rules enabled, 2 business emails pushed, 2 gmails pushed, half day wifi/half day 4g (battery saver), automatic display, hr talk time, a dozen texts, and display on for 2-3 hrs (AVERAGES).

How about if you go into the sync settings and uncheck the things you can sync manually as you need. Perhaps that way when the display turns on triggering background sync it will only sync those things which are necessary, such as emails.

I'm not sure what the sync settings look like on the Razr but on my OG Droid I have Books, Contacts, Gmail and Calendar. No sense in having Books, Contacts and Calendar syncing everytime the display turns on which would cause the phone to sync longer draining more battery. I'm not sure that this is the way the Smart Actions work but it's just an idea. Hope it helps.

BTW, there's an app on the market called "sync settings" that allows you quicker access to the...you guessed it, sync settings.

There is a free app called Dazzle which contains a lot of useful widgets. One of them toggles on and off the background sync

Can someone explain the Cell Data option? It sounds like this does NOT have to be on to receive/make phone calls and/or texts. If that's true, what does it do then?

Its the data connection to the internet. It is unneeded for calls/texts, but needs to be on to get to the net.

Ahh thanks. So I'm thinking maybe when I'm connected to my home wifi, I should have this off really... I need to figure out the best smart action schemes still.

Almost all of the initial reviews I read complained about the Razr battery life. Yet, from what I see here, it seems many are praising it. Could it be that the Smart Actions really does provide exceptional battery savings? If people are getting a full day of decent use, what more could you ask for?

Added juice defender today and with normal use 14 hours and 40% left. Yesterday was 12 hours and 30% left.

So you are using this instead of Smart Actions I presume? Are there any benefits to using this instead of Smart Actions?

100%. Why would you need the 4G radio going if your connected to WiFi? Apparently it uses FAR less battery.

Trigger: -Wifi
-Not Charging
Actions: -Cellular Data Off

Im using JD with SA, I have JD turn off Wifi after one minute of no connection, but turn on again every time I unlock it, which helps if Im outside of home or work where SA are set up to turn data off but wifi on.

I'm still manually tweaking my phone's power because the smart actions don't do exactly what I want. Here's how I run it when I'm at home (or going to after my charge is complete lol)

Wifi On
3G (but will now turn off cell data going forward at home)
Background Data on
GPS off (don't see the need unless I actually need to use this feature)
Synch refresh on
Bluetooth off

At Work I have it as such, since I'm in front of a computer all day:

3G On
Wifi Off
Background data off
Bluetooth off
GPS off
Synch refresh off

So I manually set these when I'm at home/work because I can't find a smart action that caters to exactly that. Then again I may need to experiment with its settings more...

Well I think that out of the box the phone has a lot more features than needed. So if you aren't savvy and have services running constantly you don't need, you're not going to be happy. It's like a car... you don't run the AC/HEAT and leave all the windows open while leaving it in 3rd gear on the highway, which is sort of how this phone runs off the bat lol. You need to close the windows, switch it to 5th gear and stay cruising at 65 MPH to get the most MPG right? So with the phone, as long as you know how to only enable the services you need based on your location, what you want to do and so forth, the phone can last you all day until you go to bed.

For example, my 2nd day with the phone I only made it 12 hours from a full charge, moderate n00b use as I'm still messing around with it, not bad... On my 3rd day I switched from 4G to 3G, turned off wifi, auto syching and background data while I was at work, by the time I got to bed I was at 40% battery... and that was with me messing around with it heavily when I got home. :icon_ banana:

Most of the initial reviews I read said that the battery was OK. See: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-razr/181148-engadget-review-battery-life-2.html#post1828293

Re: battery

As someone else somewhere on the forums pointed out, the first few days or maybe even the first week or two of use is probably not a good time to make a judgment on how long the battery lasts, because you spend so much time getting the to know the phone. We take a lot of time setting it up, adding contacts, experimenting and playing. Then when the newness wears off and we settle into our normal routine, THAT'S when I think I would make my judgment. When I first got my original Droid, I was appalled at how frequently I had to charge the battery. Then after I stopped fiddling with it constantly, it would usually last all day, and I'd just put it on the docking station at night.

I am accustomed, however, to carrying a spare battery with me at all times, and getting the Razr knowing that the battery can't be replaced made me a little edgy. But I think I'll just get one of those power packs that recharge the phone when necessary, and stick that in my purse.

Mine ran for 15 hours yesterday and dropped to 40%. I had added Juice Defender to the mix. (Just standard out of the box settings on JD). The day before it was 12 hours and 30% with the same type of usage. I charged it it in the truck for about 15 minutes so no real charge added. Didn't realize the cabke was plugged in. All together 26 hours with 5% left. I have wifi at home and work and the battery saver selection turned on. Quite impressed. Had enough juice for the alarm to go off this morning and a snooze.
