Developer Creates Iris in 8 Hours: Duplicate of Siri, but for Android

It's funny how Siri gets released and all of a sudden it's a mad rush from Android users to show they have a similar app. But yet "siri sucks". No one cared at all about voice apps until Apple announced Siri, now all of a sudden every Android user has been using Voice apps for 59 years.

With that being said, I think all voice apps are a little overrated, how often do people really use them? I mean the people who can actually answer honestly.

While I will agree that I've never seen as much talk about voice apps as I have since the announcement of siri, its crazy how iphone releases an app that does basically what "voice actions" has been doing on android for a year or whatever.

Alpha or not it hasn't worked once for me.

I'm talking basic questions like what is the weather forecast? Stuff like that gets a totally random response.

The thing about Apple is they can bring attention to a feature that's been released for a long time on another platform, they have that presence. "If Apple has it, it must be good". Yes Google has had voice commands for awhile now, but it still feels, for lack of better words, artificial. The thing about Siri is that you can talk to it almost in a regular voice and how you would normally versus Android which you have to slow down a bit and sound a bit like a robot.

I tried out Siri the other day and it worked great in terms of accuracy, more accurate than Android. However, in terms of use, I don't find it all too convenient, especially if one has to repeat multiple times. Yes we've had the feature, but how many of you really use it? What Apple is doing again, is now making Voice commands mainstream because they have a more polished software to it. We can thank them for that because this pushes other developers to make it better, so we all benefit from it.

Do I see myself using voice commands on a daily basis? No, not at all. However it's good for when I'm driving and need navigation all of a sudden or really need to answer a text message.

Yeah I am not saying there isn't a time and place for voice apps, certainly there is. But I would also like to point out that Apple has quite a few voice apps out for a couple years too, so it's not like they are claiming they were the first to bring a voice app to a smartphone.

I think siri is gimmicky but it works extremely well and there isn't any android app that's as developed. It probably will lose its novelty after a little while but its not comparable to voice actions etc. like dezymond says apple knows how to bring things to the forefront which is what they did with siri (hence all the "we've had this forever" stuff).

Truth is there is no android app like siri, but I'm sure there will be soon enough

siri backwards I love it... very evil lol

Maybe distasteful but a genius zombie would scare me... just saying

Liberated X2

Genius or not, still a zombie so obviously the smartphone of choice would be an IPhone because it's so darn simple and intuitive!

Also, I don't think Siri would work well for a zombie - they tend to mumble if they say anything at all!

Siri does appear to be very polished. Classic and great example of Apple's marketing prowess - this is all the rage, even though Android has had "functionality" on par for some time. On the bright side, this appears to be a real bonanza for such apps on Android, and the interest/demand should provide the financial incentive to really improve those apps.

You really have to marvel at Apple's marketing & presentation genius to generate so much buzz and excitement over a feature that has been stock Android for 1.5-2 years. And again, they pull off the demonstration without a hitch whereas Sammie demonstrates face & voice recognition fail.

That is because it hasn't come that far yet. As of right now it can call, text, or look up someone in your contacts. It can also search for videos. Any other questions it looks at Wikipedia for the answers and if it can't find anything it gives you a random response. It still can't look up the weather, tell you where you are, do simple math calculations, or even open apps yet.

I already have an app installed that is basically "Siri" for Android. It is called "Speaktoit Assistant".

From what i've seen of Siri, this is almost exactly the same. So I don't see how Siri clones on Android are a new thing?

Speaktoit Assistant! Thank you for this very cool find! I changed the Avatar to a guy but haven't figured out how to get a male voice... so I have this guy talking with a woman's voice which just seems wrong :haha:

Update: Found out you have to download SVOX TTS in order to change the voice. You can download different voice, after the trial period you have to pay per voice. I now have a male voice for my guy avatar. This app is very cool and even writes your emails for you as you tell it what to say. I am having fun.... it's the little things in life :)

Indeed voice apps have pretty much been here for a couple years, if not longer (i'm not aware of any time earlier than 4 years ago). However, Apple polished up a voice app/software and know that they can get everyone to buy into it. Not just iPhone users, but other developers to make better voice apps and try to outdo Apple.

Annoying as it is, Apple knows they have the power to push a rarely used software or idea and pretty much "reinvent the wheel" with it. Apple has become the standard in the mobile industry, something alot of us don't like, but it's what we got to deal with. So it can be a good thing, we just gotta put up with the fanboys saying how it's the greatest thing in the world :p
