Droid 2 Global ROOT, CUSTOM RECOVERY & SIM UNLOCK Tutorial

Ok, just got a D2G refurb unit and decided to root and do a nandroid backup via the instructions in the first post, just to have a backup in case anything happened. I manage to root just fine, but I run into an error message when I go to do the Bootstrap Recovery.

In the first place, I am never asked for superuser access to run the program, and the error message I get is:

Failure

Error running exec().
Command:[su, -c, .data/data/com.koushikdutta.droid2.bootstrap/files/surunner.sh]
Working Directory: null
Environment: null

Anyone ever run into this, or have an idea how to fix it?

edit: Upon doing a full on reboot on my D2G and rerunning the root program again was I able to get the Success message. However, it seems that it will not boot into recovery mode to allow me to do a nandroid backup, it just boots the whole way up.

edit2: Kept trying on it, and now I'm in recovery doing nandroid backup. Weird that it's taking multiple attempts to get it working, is this common among others?

This has happened to me to. I get into nan backup and hit yes backup and it gets to the backup data part and itll freeze. Battery pull and try it again and itll go a little farther on the back up. im gonna re try it all to see if i can get it to work so ill let you know whats up.

I apologize for being a noob, but I have dropped the APK file onto the root of my SD card, every time I try to open it I receive a "Parse error" (There is a problem parsing the package). I have debugging turned on and everything else seems alright. What is the parsing problem?

Finally got a brand new, clean ESN Droid 2 Global. It's enabled on the Rogers network in Canada and I rooted it just now...

Still having a problem accessing data on Rogers. (Wifi works fine.) Can anyone help? It's got to be some bonehead simple thing that I'm just overlooking.

Can u set ur apn permanently?
Check data delivery setting n battery manager.

Remove battery n simkad, put back in n reboot

When I update tru OTA, my apn is gone n cannot be saved.
Then I pull out d batt n simkad reboot.
It work!

It was a bonehead thing-- I needed to enter a blank password for the APN, instead of as was showing on my old device.

Oh my god, this phone is PURE UNSTOPPABLE BEASTLY POCKET POWER. Thanks everybody for your help in getting it rolling!

Droid 2 Global

Thanks all! I am new to this forum and appreciate all the info! I just got my new Droid 2 Global and was horrified by the battery life and all the BS running in the back ground. I rooted my phone with z4root as suggested - piece of cake. I use Titanium Backup as commonly suggested. Wow. Logic dictated to me some of the issues associated with the "task killers" and I switched to Autokiller. What a difference. Even with ATK, I never got above 185M free... Now, even at "optimum" designation, I am over 200M free pretty much constantly. This phone is INSANELY fast. I am loving it. I was a bit scared to tweak, but now I know it is actually necessary to get even CLOSE to the potential of this device. I need a global phone as I live in Mexico with a US service provider and went with the D2G by numerous recommendations. One thing I was told, and I'd like to hear any input: Battery life when roaming Internationally is SEVERELY affected. Is this true? I was not getting even 2 1/2 hours battery life out of the box and not even 12 hours of standby on a full charge. A level two tech from Verizon also told me that the battery (?) will learn that I am roaming and will become more efficient quite quickly. This sounds like a bit of hooey. Please understand that I am only 10 days into my first Android device after suffering for years with a Windows-phone. Any input will be MUCH appreciated.
And THANKS AGAIN!

Looking good. I am strictly a newbie to Droids but not a newbie to computers and the like for quite a while. Since I did not see a root directory or anything, I just assumed that /sdcard was just the highest level on the card. It worked flawlessly, my D2G is now rooted and wireless tether running like a charm. I will be working further, probably need your assistance or maybe even find a tidbit of my own sometime that I can help with.

Well, I'm back. Probably know the answer but gonna ask anyway. Launcherpro is great and I've loaded and running Titanium Backup Pro among other things. I've frozen a bunch of stuff primarily based on recommendations from the forum with great results. One screen which I miss that is probably with the stock home app is the one which was across the top of the screen (below the status bar of course) and showed blocks with ICON's of Wireless, Bluetooth, GPS ... Showed if it was on or off and a touch would toggle it.

need help! Rooted, flashed custom recovery, did back up nandroid and now phone boots into recovery without hold x or any other keys. Very annoying does anyone have this problem?

All tutorials below are working as of February 2011. You will only need one file to root, which is included at the bottom of this post........

hi, just wanted to say thanks for all the helpful info in this thread. im a total newb, just got my d2g about 2 weeks ago, so i read through about 20 pages before i tried anything.
followed the instructions exactly as listed above and it worked perfectly, rooted in about 10 seconds. got "bloat freezer" to stop all the bs apps i cant remove. im taking small steps until i understand better what im doing, reading is the key!

Thanks again
