ROOT/UNROOT TUTORIAL (Courtesy of RyanZA on xdadevelopers)

1. Download and extract the z4root.zip file and copy the .apk directly to /sdcard.

thanks in advance

So Easy less then 2 mintues! THANK YOU for organizing it so simply! dancedroid
Why did I wait so long to do this? I am writing this from my laptop tethered to my D2G! For some one like me who rides the train for 2hr+ each day this is going to be amazing that now I can tether my laptop. Too bad my laptop battery only last 5 seconds.

I couldn't be more happy to post this:

TurboSIM works fine without Verizon activation and unlock code. Checked. Bought at Ebay, just input 200539432676 in Search string on Ebay.

So now there is way around Verizon's walls!

Wohoo :)

Im coming from Droid 1 rooted, got a warranty replacement from Asurion and they sent me a brand new (not rebuilt) D2G...this thing is awesome!

On the D1 I've always been told to not trust the one click root type apps, is this different? I can't believe I can root using this and no rsd lite or sbf or dealing with the bootloader or anything like that....What about custom roms and OC kernels? What is the stock processor speed here and can we go much higher?

I had the exact same situation as you, got the D2G from insurance replacement about 2 weeks ago. My droid was rooted rom'd, custom themed and OC'd as well. I've found the dev work out there to be on par with how it was when the OG first came out.

For what its worth I've used the z4 root method and haven’t had a problem with it. I've also read you can over clock the cpu using jrummy16's overclock widget in the market. Personally I think the 1.2 ghz the phone runs at stock is fast enough. I actually use set cpu to underclock it to 1000 for the increased battery life....still runs smoother than my OG did at 1ghz.

As far as roms go, there are a few, I learned the hard way to NOT install as D2 rom on the D2G, that’s a brick'er. So make sure you get the SBF and rsd lite 4.9 for this phone. With the boot loader being encrypted by good 'ol moto you can not load a custom kernal and this phone runs two different radios so the rom'ing is difficult. In time I’m sure we'll see some dev's put something together on par with the custom stuff for the OG.

Right now though I've am pretty satisfied with the performance of this phone. I have it rooted running launcher pro. and found various apps to match the custom stuff you find in cm or sapphire...with the exception of the notification LED blinking while the screen is on. I miss that! The best reason to root if nothing else is to block the ads. If I had a wish though Id want a stock deodexed rom with some of the blur stuff (yes I know..not all of it just a couple of things) so I can theme it myself with ninja morph or 7zip

After a day with it I agree with you fully...This phone is so smooth and fast there is no need for the overclock. I downloaded setcpu and was surprised to see it already set at 1.2 ghz! My main problem is that I am having a hard time getting swype back, I was on the trial but I think I dl'ed it too many times

whoops, just realized it's already on the phone....I can't live without swype, stoked!

My Droid 2 Global is not letting me download z4root.zip.
It says "Can not download. The content is not supported by this phone." Then I tried the manual rooting, downloading Android Terminal Emulator. After typing su and enter, I received a notice saying permission denied. Can anyone help me? :-(

I downloaded the z4root.zip to my laptop, unzipped it, and then transfered the .apk file to my SD card an installed it on my phone from there.

So I was able to root phone no problem. Now what can I do? I don't have vzn, bought the phone on ebay, thought it was unlocked, its not still has all the vzn crap how do I get rid of all the vzn cdma stuff. Am I stuck with a nice paper weight? Does virgin mobile work with the phone?

Edit: I'm a noob
