Droid 2 Global ROOT, CUSTOM RECOVERY & SIM UNLOCK Tutorial

I just sbf'd mine. I was a lil nervous, but it was pretty easy.

I have no idea how to do this, im a noob. I have read over all the forums, but they are all in greek to me. No one seems to speak english anymore, so I don't know how to sbf'd the phone. If it works to get the phone back to factory without the green start up screen then ill do it, but I need to know how.

If you go to the sbf thread there is a video walk through. If you cant follow along with that, sorry to say but you dont need to mod the phone till you understand what your doing. Not to be rude but it doesnt get any easier then following a video of some one walking you through the process, and even then if you just read the step by step, you cant go wrong. TBH, it really is just a matter of using common since. I mean, if your phone is messed up, you know your going to reset it back to a factory state. So you boot in to recovery and there is an option called wipe data/factory reset. It really speaks for itself. Thats not a put down, but just a generalized statement.

Your not being mean, sometimes people need to be told that they shouldnt do something. That would be me...That is why i am trying to put it back to factory. I did do the factory reset via the recovery menu (the green screen) and it went back to normal after i unrooted it. However when i restart the phone for whatever reason the green screen comes up everytime. But i will try the video and see if that works. Havent seen the video yet, most of what i have seen is for the Droid 2 and they say it wont work for D2G, but havent seen a video for the D2G. So ill check it out.

Its in the D2G hacks section. And I have no idea what green screen you mean unless you put a custom boot animation in.

Its not that you shouldnt do it, I gladly encourage any one who wants to try flashing to do it, but just do plenty of reading to be familiar with what they are doing first.

The green screen is the one where it says "install update.exe from SD card, reset to factory settings, etc. I guess its the boot screen.

Anyone else pick up a virus with the z4root.zip download? Microsoft Security Essentials thinks it's a virus anyways. I can't even see the file after I've downoaded it!

NOTE: It appears that Verizon has put a carrier lock on the device for US GSM carriers. Therefore until someone figures out a workaround, you will not be able to use this device on AT&T or T-Mobile in its current state, even if SIM unlocked. The good news is that devs on various boards seem to be close to a workaround so as soon as one becomes available I will add it here.

Hello, I wanted to have the last status on this note... is there an easy way to fix this ?

I am from Canada and travel all over the world for work. This is the phone I would like because of all the US+EU frequencies, Android, and real keyboard.

I was wondering if in the US it's the GSM frequencies that are blocked by the software, or if it's the carrier themselves? i.e.: if I go to the USA with my Rogers/Fido SIM, will the GSM work ? Because I doubt Rogers/Fido have agreements with USA CDMA carriers...

Any other US foreigner tested this?

thanks !

could find sd card to download root file, followed instruction went to file manager clicked on phone files, phones say;memory card is missing, insert memory card to read files! can anyone help a newbee? thanks dan

hey, i am new here and i just got my droid 2 global flashed to metro and wanted to know if i can root the device without messing anything up. Will i have to back up the apn's and will the phone still work if i install a rom on it and upload the apn's back onto it? any help will be much appreciated. Thanks is advance.

I don't have an answer but let me know if it works. I have considered leaving Verizon and metro is one of my options.

alternative kernels to improve battery life?

Any ultra-low or low voltage kernels to further improve battery life?

After the SIM is unlocked, will the D2G work with a Straight Talk SIM card? I'm buying the Droid 3 and my friend wants to use my D2G on her GSM Straight Talk plan. She has the high end ST phone the should have the proper SIM card.

I've done a lot of reading on this, and I've managed to find that an iphone will work, but I really cannot find anything about androids.

Thanks!

The D2G will NOT work on GSM in the US, unless you purchase the DroidBandUnlock hack from Team Black Hat ($100 and has restrictions, including not being able to update to later radios etc)

Note that most (all?) of the recent global smartphones have the same issue, GSM will not work in the US

I'm running z4root on my Droid2Global and it went about 5 minutes so I ended it and ran it again. It is now 5 minutes in again and still says 'running exploit in order to obtain root access' so I don't know what to do. Any ideas?

It's also FC'ing all over the place now and running very slow.
