Droid Bionic heading towards Verizon

Did anyone else notice that even though it is only 512 mb ram it is DDR2 ram as opposed to the standard DDR. Should make a bit of difference but I am upset that the Atrix gets twice that.

But if half that 1gig is dedicated to the docking functionality there is effectively no difference between the two. The two are differentiated to keep VZW and AT&T happy, but VZW gets LTE and AT&T gets the docking (which does appear more gimmick than value).

However, the point stands that the Bionic COULD have had 1gig but instead they gave us a reach around.

they still get faux 4g with HSPA+ and theirs comes out much sooner. Really aside from motoblur the Att version seems like the better phone.

also, do we know for a fact the additional 512 is dedicated to only the docking function?
No but it must be very memory intensive. They could have easily put in 768 but they didnt. That should tell you something.

Wait until the hands on videos/reviews start popping up. I believe we will be hearing a lot more on this subject.

Right, so it must reside in Ram....And I suspect it might even be partitioned (wouldn't it have to be if it's a separate OS?). And if it's partitioned you won't be able to utiilize whatever is partitioned when not in use, so probably puts useable ram between 512 and 768.

Maybe if it gets rooted a rom could remove it and free-up the full 1gig, but somehow I doubt it.

I was excited for this event until I saw the new phones for Verizon that just aren't that big a jump over the DX! So since my contract was up I went and picked up a DX! This phone is blazing fast and this screen is amazing. No it doesn't have a dual core but I saw the video of the motorola with the T2 and it didn't look any faster. I dont game on my phone either so shouldn't be a big deal. Point is the DX is a beast and I wasnt going to wait another 4-6 months for a minor upgrade over the DX.

Agreed. I don't see any need for dual core right now. There are no apps or games that can take advantage of it, and probably won't be until later this year.

By then the Droid X2 will be out and it will have quad core and 4gigs of ram with a grapics card!

Why does everyone think that atrix isn't 4G? It says its 4G on motos site.

Furthermore, at&t is using LTE, I know this for a fact. So any 4G device they get can theoretically be used on VZW...hence the rumor that the atrix will hit VZW come Q2.

It's HSPA+ 4g like T-Mobile's. AT&T aren't gonna roll out LTE for at least 2-3 more years.

AT&T LTE launching around June, actually. VZW's will be a lot better as far as footprint.

But point stands that the "4g" is marginally faster than existing 3G. And a few months ahead of the Bionic really isn't that big of a deal. Smoke and mirrors, mostly. Although I'd assume they'd bring out an LTE Atrix this summer.

Careful, it has a notoriously scratchable screen

Um, no, it's LTE and its launching in 2011. My best friend has already been through training for it at AT&T

According to AT&T LTE phones will not be launching until 2nd half 2011, so unless the Atrix is not coming out until then it is going to be HSPA+.

I know; its very embarrassing for them. They're supposed to get the Atrix in Q2, but with no LTE? Give it to us for cryin out loud!!!

Regarding the RAM, if you look at iSupply's teardowns over the last year or so, almost every device has been using DDR2. It's nothing new. It may be clocked higher on a faster bus, but don't expect noticable improvement - we're talking a few percentage points on one subsystem of the entire phone.

Concerning the extra RAM on the ATRIX, does anyone have a source referencing it's use for the docking station? As I understood it, the docking station would run nothing more than the apps on the phone and a special Firefox app with tabbed browsing. Nothing like a second OS (that would be a heck of a lot of development just for a special browser).

If you figure the OS takes up a hundred MB or so of RAM, the rest is available for apps. The app currently in use gets first dibs on the rest of the RAM. The only apps that we can possibly expect to use more than 300+ MB of RAM are games, and even that's a stretch. The rest of the RAM is used for background apps. So the only advantage the ATRIX would have would be in resuming background apps (as it wouldn't have to restart them, because they wouldn't have been garbage collected to clear more room). Time will tell, but I bet 99% of the time the extra RAM won't be beneficial (and don't forget RAM requires battery power anyway).

Does anybody know if the Bionic will have NFC. I know its not really being used in a lot of places yet but it would be nice to have. Especially since I think I will have this phone for at least 2 years.

Also I think we will notice a great increase in battery life because of the dual core processors. There will be two processors to execute tasks which should put less of a drain on the phone. I think this was one of the things that Moto was trying to accomplish. I really am getting tired of having to plug my phone in everyday.
