Droid Incredible being discontinued?

Verizon will flip the switch for LTE by Q3 2010. dancedroid The CDMA smartphone devices will be the first series of devices that will not receive new development.*
For example, Verizon dropped ALL Noikia CDMA devices from their line-up for 2010-2011 and Nok had three CDMA devices submitted for approval in 2009. VZ will not be dedicating resources to CDMA, except in the 'Simple Feature' devices.

*Have you noticed that VZ started releasing new 'Droid devices within two to three months of each other, rather than annually or semi-annually? They're clearing the dist channel asap.

i hope so!! droid pro for the 2010 holiday season?? dancedroid

Just because it's a Verizon document doesn't mean that this was a Verizon decision. HTC could have some hand in this too, they might what to change markets and are stopping production after all orders have been filled or something. Also as other people said the date is not posted so it could be many months till it's actually phased out.

The only problem with this is that while yes LTE is coming out and most reports are at Q4 2010 or later, The first devices the will be avaliabe for purchase will be broadband cards and other accessories, the first phones will most likely be avalibe in Q1 2011. Even then it wont be avaliabe in all markets. I see most CDMA only PPC/SmartPhones will last till Q3 2011 - Q1 2012. So there really isn't a reason to rush or phase out a phone this early

^But look what's it's lumped in their with: phones from the last few years.
And u right, HTC could have been the ones who decided this.

But hookbill and CK makes some good points about not seeing anymore Inc. commercials and Verizon phasing HTC from the Droid line up.

Maybe the Inc. is gonna be pushed to the lower end market with the Eris, LG Ally, etc.

I think that MAYBE with the ever-increasingly hard to get parts they need for the incredible that maybe it just isn't cost effective, especially with so many other phones coming out..

Then I read some where that the Samsung Galaxy S and Pro have parts all made by Samsung....the same ppl that might part of the blame for the Inc. shortages/delays...

Samsung focusing on their own new phones and might have put the Inc. screen issue on the back burner...

bingo! you may have soomething there

side note: the galaxy s is using a different type of AMOLED, called "super amoled".

Moto's product kills HTC's so maybe VZW is cutting it loose. Who knows..... :icon_eek:

Maybe VZW is sick of dealing with angry customers who can't buy an advertised phone... and since HTC's production is way behind demand.... could be.

Really, Motorola's products were in the toilet for a while. They had some awful phones until recently. Then they were able to put themselves back on the map with the new Droids. It's more likely that this market is moving so damn fast right now that there's only room for so many devices. This whole race to better, faster, more hardware/software etc. phones is going to start hurting the Android Market at some point. I think they (VZW, HTC, MOTO) and all the other manufacturer's need to take a breath and let the marketplace catch up to itself. People are going to stop buying these devices if every other week another phone comes out that makes your phone obsolete, maybe an exaggeration but you get my point. As much as I don't want an iphone at least there market is stable re: what the phone is and that it will be there in 6 months and not discontinued. It makes all the hype seem a bit ridiculous if a phone comes out that is supposed to be "Incredible" and 2 months later it's on the chopping block, that's just crazy. The Android market IMO is too fragmented at this point and it needs to be consolidated to maintain it's formidable presence.

I really know how to pick em'! My brand new Droid Incredible is already obsolete! I love it anyway but this really sucks as far as apps not being supported for me in the future. Oh well, only 2 years left on my contract...

kmo:

The Inc. isnt the only phone HTC makes...remember the EVO 4G, the phone the X is actually competing with.

The Inc. has a place: normal size slate phone...but if delays n parts shortages are keeping it out of ppls hands......oh well

I just called my local dealer(for phones), and she said that they just pushed the border date back more, and that she has heard nothing about it being discontinued. I hope not.

I doubt the this will hold true, but let's assume it does...

Glad I already got one! Not concerned about support as I'm sure HTC and VZW will provide support at least for another two years. That's when the contract will run out for users who just got one.

Another reason I don't think this will hold true is because the incredible is the only alternative for a pocketable keyboard-less device on vzw.

I do think that Samsung is playing hardball by delaying the screens for HTC phones. It's a tough world and the fewer competitors to their own phones the better.

Come on droid pro!!!

I get it, I'm pretty updated on a daily basis with what's going on with the cell phone craze. Just saying the service providers/manufacturer's need to have some phones that have some longevity to them for people to have some faith that the phone they purchased will be around after they get it. I get the fact that technology moves forward but at this current pace it's hard to tell who's coming out ahead, not the consumer if there high end phone doesn't get supported. For sure the service provider and phone companies are making $$$$ and that's what it's all about. At some point I still might end up with an iphone just because I know it will be here in the end. I would think VZW would want some "flagship" phones in there line up that will be there for more than a month or two. It all seems really wishy washy as far as all the hype that happens on release and then "oh we're not supporting that model" any more, I for one am not a fanboy of any product. Just what works for me, if I can't get that I will move on to something else. This is all a bit premature because nobody knows for sure when this all will happen. That being said, I will be happy if I get my 2.2 upgrade and I will just wait for the dust to settle a bit before choosing my next device. Discontinued or not the INC is still a great device and I am enjoying my experience with it for now....

You should care because the less people that have access to the phone the less phone specific modifications will be available.
