DVD Catalyst

right from the dvd to the sd card.

Did you change any settings? both 128 and 160kbps for audio work fine, but anything else has not been confirmed.
When you play the file on yourt computer (quicktime) does it have audio then?

dvdcatalyst

If I have some AVI files on my PC can this software create dvd video files to watch in a dvd player?

No. It can convert the avi's to another format, including MPEG2 (which some DVD players can play) but nothing directly to DVD.

For my own conversions of video to DVD, I usually use DVDFlick, a simple free dvd creation app, or Nero if I want something fancy.

DVD Flick

Excellent software.

Tried two other video converters then landed on DVD Catalyst because of this thread... everything just works. Movies are playing beautifully on the Droid!

Thank you for using DVD Catalyst :)

I just downloaded the trial over the holidays to give it a try. Extremely simple to use and works like a charm. Bought the full version and have since converted over a dozen DVD's to my DROID. I like that I can rip a bunch of DVD's to ISO's and then put them in a queue in DVD Catalyst and goto bed.

Great software!

I just skimmed through this thread, so I may have missed the answer to my questions...but, here goes anyway:

1. Does this program work on a Mac? Just got a new Mac Mini and set it up as a home theater, so DVD ripping and processing are my new love.

2. Does this program require another program in order to work? For example, I have been using Handbrake, and it requires VLC to be installed to work, which is kind of a pain because Handbrake just updated to 64-bit and VLC is 32-bit, so they no longer work together...so I am looking for an all-in-one program at a reasonable price (I'm not unwilling to pay for a program, just some of the video editing programs are upwards of $100.00 which seems a little outrageous for me just making digital copies of DVD's I already own and paid for...)

3. What is the maximum resolution you can get from a standard DVD? I understand I won't be getting a 1080p file out of a standard DVD, but I have a 42" Plasma television so I would love a program that can get at least 720p or better (if that is even possible) for that as well as the resolution for my Droid.

3 1/2. If there is no way to get 1080 or 720 from a dvd, would there be a way to convert an HD-DVD? I saw that your program doesn't support Blu-Ray yet.

Thank you for your interest in DVD Catalyst

No, While I did purchase a MAC for this purpose 2 years ago, the development tools used for DVD Catalyst do not work on a MAC, which basically means that besides learning a different development tool (XCode) I also have to port all the code over. Unfortunately not much progress made in that part.

2. Does this program require another program in order to work? No, it works out of the box. Some DVDs are more tricky than others (Star Trek 2009, Transformers 2 for example) due to a stronger protection system that scrambles the DVD scenes.

3. What is the maximum resolution you can get from a standard DVD? I understand I won't be getting a 1080p file out of a standard DVD, but I have a 42" Plasma television so I would love a program that can get at least 720p or better (if that is even possible) for that as well as the resolution for my Droid.

DVDs are usually 720x480 or something along those lines (848x576 for PAL)
While it is possible to "upscale" the video during conversion, it works better to just use the original resolution of the video, and have the player you use upscale it to the TV. Depending on the conversion format used, it will still look fine. I watch Droid-formatted video full-screen on my 1080p laptop screen and have no complaints on quality. If you use higher resolution video files, those will convert at higher resolutions.

No HD-DVD or Bluray supported yet. While it is possible to rip these,m the process is unreliable at the moment. For a 1-click solution such as DVD Catalyst, the process has to be more reliable.

That's unfortunate...If only I hadn't just given away my PC to my mom! To your knowledge is there a better way of accomplishing this on a Mac? Or if you can point me to a website or something I don't mind doing my own legwork or asking over there as well, very excited to get movies on the droid and mac.

Also, thank you for your quick response and knowledgeable answer!

You are welcome,

Bootcamp would be the best option :), but other than that, Handbrake. It was originally developed for the Mac. Just make sure you have VLC installed to be able to handle DVD's. For DVDs in general, doom9.org is one of the best resources for ripping and conversion as well. Their forums are flooded with information.

On a Mac, if you are having issues with Handbrake reading the DVD because of VLC, try using Mac The Ripper to rip the DVD, then use Handbrake on the created folder to encode to MP4/M4V.

I posted this in another thread but it probally belows in this one.

Can DVDcatalyst convert a 1080P blu-ray rip with .flac audio in a .MKV to a format that the droid can play? I tried handbrake and couldn't get the resulting file to play on my droid.

No idea :)
MKV bluray rips are not a problem, but I never ran into one that has FLAC audio.
I did convert some sample files a while ago that did have flac audio, so I don't see a reason why it would not work. Just drag the file on the trial and give it a shot.

I'll give it a try. I convert all the HD audio tracks (Tru-HD and DTS-MA) to .flac to make them easier to play in any direct show player.

Will it convert the .flac to something else? MP3 maybe? .flac will not play in the droid.
