Easy Root, one-click root for DROID 1 and DROID X, works as intended

I have been lurking here reading up on everything, I think I'm pretty well set, if I understand correctly, rooting and then installing clockworkmod will also get me the clockwork recovery as well and I can backup the current default 2.2 software and then install a new theme if I want? If I want to go back I can just recover the backup I did and get back to default theme? Really only interested in the themes for right now.
Got it in one. Thank you for making everyone's life easier by reading up on things! :-D dancedroid

If you want some more advice or help once you've rooted, click the link in my signature to a work-in-progress thread I've started. I hope it helps.

Thanks for the confirmation... Yea I have been reading up on your stuff too. Thanks for that information as well.

what would be better, use easyroot now with stock 2.1 or wait for the 2.2 ota update and then use easyroot to root after the 2.2 update?

I plan on just waiting for the offical 2.2 update to be rolled out to me, i dont want to mess up when updating manually. So i will just wait. So if i rooted now then i will still get the OTA 2.2 update?

You do NOT have to root in order to obtain 2.2 right now.

If 2.2 Froyo is all you are wanting right now, you can install it manually by following the directions at this website...

Sorry, but I'm not 100% sure if you will receive the 2.2 OTA update if you root right now. I believe you will still get it, but it will cause you to lose root. However if you install a custom ROM once you are rooted, some ROMs disable any OTA updates from coming through. On the other hand, if you root now and install a custom ROM, chances are your ROM *will* be built from 2.2 Froyo and... dare I say... possibly even MORE stable. At least that's what I have found. I updated manually, rooted a week later and can't believe I didn't do it sooner......

If you want 2.2 right now, I would advise you to manually update! The website link I provided has very simple step by step instructions that are hard to mess up, but I understand your concern. It seems to still be unknown when 2.2 will be pushed out to the Droid 1...

Yup, and lose root just as fast.

So if i did a manual update then i obviously wouldnt get the OTA update right? And the manual update and the ota update are the same release right?

Same release, different installation method done by the update, different wrapper. But the same build, same stuff at the end. Essentially the same thing for the end user.

One more question, i will manually update to 2.2 but then when the next ota update comes out later on down the road, i will still get the ota update for that one right??

If there is one, yes. At this point Motorola and Verizon have no real obligation to push another update to us unless there's a glaring hole/bug/issue with this one. A manual update will in no way affect your chances of getting the next update, nor will rooting this build unless you install a ROM that blocks the OTAs.

So does this cut out all the steps that required one to own a windows computer? like can I root with my mac now?

maybe im just not understanding 1 click root.

let me ammend to get the other questions out of the way, if i want a different ROM will I be able to with just my mac and/or droid? if so with all this, i will be rooted very soon.

With ROMManager you can flash CloworkMod Recovery within the app itself and use that for your flashing needs, so yes, you can do it with a Mac.

Ok, I'm having trouble with this. I installed EasyRoot, rebooted, and it "says" I'm rooted. But using dropcap2 I get an error message "failed to execute dropcap2." Also when I go into Terminal, and enter "su" it says access denied. I get the feeling I'm NOT rooted. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks
