Features, and Bug-Fixes, and Themes, OH MY! Sapphire - 0.8.4

Since we're all a bunch of multitasking fools in the Droid community (because we can)...I thought I would throw this comment at you to find out if anyone else is experiencing this.

I have a 2hr round trip commute to work. So, as soon as I get into my car, I snap my MotoDroid into the car mount and start listening to Pandora or podcasts (Doggcatcher). When text messages come in, I slide the notification screen down and click on the SMS app to read it. Since my headphones (wired, not bluetooth) also have a mic, I often respond via speech to text. I could do all of this without interrupting the music or podcast I was litening to....meaning those would continue to play at the same time I was speeking my text message. Lately, and I don't know if it's a bug with 0.8.4, when I click on the mic key on the keyboard, the music/podcast stops playing until I'm done using speech to text.

Has anyone else noticed that? Also, if anyone knows the cause/fix, please reply.
Thanks in advance!

Umm wouldn't the music interfere with you speaking into the mic? Seems like a deliberate thing to me, if only to keep the music from being interpreted as you speaking into the mic.
Umm, no. As I am wearing headphones, the music is directed into my ears and not into the mic. I never really had a problem with the mic interpreting what I was saying while I was listening to music.

OK, just making sure I read everything correctly:

You get into your CAR for a 2 hour commute, listen to your music with HEADPHONES on, READ your SMS messages, and dictate responses to them?????

Please tell me what roads you drive so I know what one to avoid.

lol...thanks for the constructive input!

I can also tie my shoes and have a conversation at the same time (which I know can be a challenge for some).

Great work on the new rom, everything is running great for me, however I think there may be some problems with some of the themed market apps. I was getting a lot of market FCs when I used the NexTang and the SG themes, however when I pushed the original vending.apk to system it fixed the problems and I have not had the market FC once since then. Thanks for the great work.

JSYK, In a number of states, listening to music with headphones on is illegal while driving. At least California, Louisiana, Minnesota, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania that I can find quickly. It's dangerous to drive distracted, and earpieces can very easily block out important sounds, like sirens and screaming pedestrians. However, all states issue licenses to the completely deaf - but deaf people are used to relying on their other senses for safety.

But back to your actual issue - It seems like the droid mutes the music to listen to the mic for the purpose of not getting a loopback like was already suggested. For one, motorola probably just didn't bother to make a special case for earpieces, so they fall into the same programming as the built-in mic and speaker. For two, there's no way to tell if the item you plug in is a headphone or huge external speakers - they are electrically the same.

What I want to know ck is why you run such high mins? I see you with higher than normal min frequencies a lot.

I don't like to run low clock speeds. I see no benefit.

I usually run it at 550 but w/ the "stock" kernel that slot is not available.

So the min is not really high it's standard unless 50mhz over regular clock is considered high.

I just always see people using 125 or 250 Mhz for their mins so when it's idle, it has a lower speed to go to, thus saving battery. I mean, I run 400/250(or 125) for when my screens off and 1000/250(125) for when the screens on. Plus my Battery and Temp profiles, i get some pretty good battery life :)

Im trying to make the clock speed 800 mhz instead of 1 gig to save battery. I have it setup in setup cpu i profiles and to load on boot. I rebooted the phone twice but it keeps going to 1 gig?? However, the profiles for charging do work when I plug in the phone. Any idea??

What is your exact default profile?

Im using the stock kernel which is at 1 gig. I went into setcpu and made the default 800/125, charge 400/125, screen off 400/125, 40%< 600/125

It's not illegal in Michigan. I wouldn't do it if I was distracted to that degree. When I'm in the car, my Droid is mounted to the front windshield right to the left of my steering wheel. So, even when I look at it (for a second), I still have plain sight of what is going on outside the vehicle. I would say that someone looking down at their car stereo to choose a station would be more distracted. Also, I'm in my 40s, so my loud music phase has long since passed. The headphones I have are the small / on-the-ear type and aren't noise cancelling. When I read and dictate text messages, it's not done while the vehicle is moving (stop lights only). I also take a lot of work-related calls when I'm driving to and from work, so the headphones are great for hands-free phone conversations.

...just wanted you to understand that I'm not a total menace to the road. :)

For trial and error bump up your minimums to 500-600 across the board and see if that fixes the problem.

Not telling you to leave it there but for troubleshooting purposes only.

Have you considered using the 800MHz kernel?

On boot, sapphire sets your phone manually to use the fastest speed the kernel supports, which is 1Ghz by default. When SetCPU loads on boot, it SHOULD override that with its own settings.

EDIT: This is not what is happening, these instructions don't solve the problem at all.

My guess (and I have not tested this) is that SetCPU is either not setting your CPU speed on boot, or it is setting your CPU speed too soon and is being overridden by the default settings. If you are using SetCPU, you do not need the built-in overclocking script. Try getting rid of the default settings by removing the script that sets them:
Code:
su
sysrw
rm /system/etc/init.d/01_cpufreq
Now ONLY SetCPU will be setting your speed. I take no responsibility for any problems that result from trying this, and I have no idea if it will work. Make a backup copy of the file if you want to undo the changes I'm suggesting.

EDIT: The suggestion of using an 800Mhz kernel makes more sense than always underclocking a 1Ghz kernel.
