How To: Root your Motorola DROID Bionic

Is this why I can't root? I downloaded the .893, but went back to .886 and I've tried several rooting methods, but can't obtain root. Do I have to go back to .893 or is there a way to do it without?
You need to rel3as3droot and 43v3r root for the bionicv2.1 read it it will brtngyou back to stock then you can root again

That's what I used to get back to .886. I was able to restore back to that, but when I tried to root, nothing happens. It'll recognize my phone prompt me to hit any key to continue, but then nothing happens.

Yeah I did. Nothing happened :(

So its not giving you any options or just not letting you do them? Theres gotta be a way we just gotta figure it out. Its not like you bricked your phone or anything. When you go into settings / about phone what does it say for system verison

It gives me the options. I click on #2 (which is the one I need) and then it says it's ready to root my Bionic whenever I am and to hit any key to start. So I'll a key and then nothing happens. Like I didn't hit anything.

The system version I have is 5.5.886.XT875.Verizon.en.US

My kernel is 2.6.35.7-g68606e6

I think my kernel is different now and that's what's giving me problems, right?

Ya see what ya mean then you did cheesecake correct. You tried Petes deal and it didnt work cause of kernel. Let me ask around Ill see what I can find out

No, no cheesecake. I wasn't rooted when I did the initial update. I went back using R3l3AS3DRoot and at the end of resetting, it asked whether or not I wanted to root and I elected not to. But then I decided I wanted to root, but now it won't work.

I know this is probably going to be seen as a stupid question to some but.....how does a guy know which root tool/method/procedure is right for him and his Bionic?

What I mean is....I've looked around in lots of the different Android forums, and they all seem to have a different tool or method or whatever.
Are they basically all the same, and just look different because they were put together by different people, or are they actually different ways of getting to the same end?

If they are actually different methods in some sense, then is there an objective measure to figure out which one is 'best', or is everyone just simply going with whichever one happens to be the choice of the particular forum they've landed on?

Thanks in advance for your patience with this root wanabe :-)

Honestly its up to you, some people prefer the manual method, while others prefer the one click method.

As for me, I used r3l3as3d root to root my bionic and it was a very simple process actually, the Droidth3ory team does very good quality work, I've followed them for quite some time now.

Hope that helps!

Thanks, guys.

I did it (with 'Pete's' tool/method) as per the OP in this thread.

I went to the thread that it links to...

...I then downloaded PetesMotorolaRootTools_v1.06.zip as per the link on that page...

...I then noticed that there was a link to the maker's website within the tool, so I clicked it just to see if there was a newer version of his tool available...

...There I found that there is indeed a newer version (1.07). So, I downloaded it...

Once I had that tool downloaded, I gave it a try.
I had to run through the process twice, because the first time, it didn't work.

Let me explain...
In the instructions, it said to set the phone's USB config to 'charge only'.
So, I did.
However, the root tool could not find the phone....it just stayed at that point where it says, "Looking for phone..."

At that point, I recalled from a couple of the forum threads out there (possibly inluding this one....don't recall at the moment) about rooting the bionic that others have found it necessary to set that USB config setting to 'PC Mode' instead of 'charge only' mode. So, I gave that a try.

The good part was that, as the computer started re-recognizing the phone with the different setting and started changing over to the other version of the driver for it (which it has to do whenever the USB mode of the phone is changed on the phone) the root tool was able to find the phone. However, the bad part is that, since it wasn't already done installing the driver, I think that bonked the rooting process.

The root tool process got so far and looked like it was going to work.....step 1 = done.....reboot = done....step 2 = done....reboot = done (though it never actually rebooted a second time).....but then on step 3 = FAILED, and gave me a message something like,
"Sorry. We were not able to root your phone. You should rerun the process to see if it will work the second time around. Hopefully you don't have one of the phones where this particular exploit has been 'fixed'." [at that point, I was thinking that I may need to find a different root tool]

I ran Pete's root tool all over again from the beginning, and that time, it worked. :-)
So, now I'm all ready to go try the backup tools and other things that require root, and see how that goes.

Thanks, guys.
