[How To] Unlock Bootloader & Root Galaxy Nexus

No. Skype wasn't on my phone, I had to get it from the market. I installed it without a problem. Are you sure you are in the right section? My Verizon is one of the only pieces of bloatware on the nexus as far as I know

Skype was on my phone but maybe that carried over from my DX thats why it was on there my bad. I mean this device is really bloatware free it doesn't even got that stupid Verizon ensigna engraved permamently in the front, thats cool.

I just read the whole thing(what I should had done in the first place I was ansxious) Im going to go through the whole step anyway right now.

Good luck. It's easy for most people from what I read (grrr) but it was a major pain in the ass for me. I've rooted a bunch of droids and started w/ the method w/ droid life the 2nd day. That brought me here and I can't say the method was easier, but ultimately it's the way I went. I had problems w/ the drivers so I removed both the samsung and pda net driver. PDA net didn't ask me to select a manufacturer of the phone and I've since determined that if that doesn't happen you need to update your samsung driver. I opened the device manager then found my galaxy. There was a question mark there so I right clicked and picked update driver. Once I did pda net installed.

unfortunately it didn't install on my phone so I had to get it from the market then connect to verify it worked. Now I'm unlocked and downloading my apps. I'm getting a lot of login errors but I assume that will correct itself once I open maps, etc and login.

I just did it and it work!!!

That was instense, felt like I was in Mission Impossible or something.

Only thing that didn't match for me was I never seen the "Andriod 1.0" driver. But I did a search in this thread before proceeding and he said he went ahead and it worked so I went ahead without seeing it and it worked.

I did at first power up get sign in errors but it went away for now.

Even though I already had the drivers for Samsung and PDNET(used for my DroidX) I choose to reinstall it anway

Thats why I always had and only come to these forums, I swear this time around Im going to donate to my favorite free apps, I need to keep the Droid gods shining my way

So when I start my phone up, the lock icon is closed. I have root access, did that day one but after seeing a question about the lock icon had me wondering.

You wouldn't see a lock icon at all unless it was unlocked as far as i know. Are you sure it's closed? The icon is not completely open just looks like its barely open

This is correct. You'll only see the padlock icon if you're unlocked.

You can't be rooted yet unless you are unlocked. So first, are you sure you're rooted? Or 2 are you sure you aren't unlocked?

I'm pretty sure that you will see the locked lock icon when you're locked. I don't think I ever rebooted with it locked just watched videos and I'm pretty sure its there! And yes, its not totally open, just a gap!
It's open so you know it's unlocked but closed enough so the Vz employees don't know... >;-D mwhaha! xD

No, a locked bootloader doesn't have any lock symbol. Just a black screen with Google at the top.

Thanks OP! Had the phone for two days and on my second android phone. This by far was the easiest, fastest, method and also worked on the first time around! DancingNexus

Just ordered my Galaxy Nexus through wirefly. Gonna root this sucker once she arrives. FWIW, still rocking a rooted D1 since day 1. Wondering, if I root and run wireless tether, will Verizon see my data usage and charge me? I'm still on the ole unlimited plan btw. :happy3:
