Internal Document Verifies Closure Of Loophole For Legacy Unlimited Data Subscribers On Verizon

Hi all, I just signed up for this forum to ask a specific question that I believe is related to this thread. I'm on a FamilyShare plan with one smartphone (me) and two basic lines (actually one basic line is going to be switched to smartphone soon). My smartphone (Motorola Droid Razr M) broke 1.5 years into my 2 year plan. I wanted to take my dad's (basic phone) upgrade so I could get a new smart phone at a reduced rate. I'm willing to pay for the 2GB for the full 2 year contract. However, will this add the 2GB data plan to my dad's basic phone line too? I already tried it once when I found a great deal for a smartphone at Walmart and they automatically tacked on the 2GB to my dad's basic phone line so I reluctantly returned the new phone and went back to my old plan. Just wasn't sure if that was Walmart's mistake or I can never use my dad's upgrade eligibility to buy myself a new smart phone (and keep him on a basic phone with no data plan). Any help appreciated. Thanks!
Welcome to Droid Forums! Yes, when you use the upgrade on your dad's line for the smartphone the 2gb data plan will be added to that line and will have to stay for the remainder of the contract. You can move the phone to your line and use whatever data plan you have.

Thank you! The associate at Verizon was insistent that he does this all the time and that Walmart screwed up, but looks like he was mistaken.
He is not completly mistaken......not to long ago you could use a basic line upgrade for a smartphone then 30 days later move the phone and take the data plan off. However, Verizon has closed that loophole and now requires data plans attached to a smartphone upgrade have to remain for the entire contract.

Unless you destroy the new sim card before activating the phone. All the plans and upgrades are attached to sim cards and not devices. So as long as that new sim never gets activated, new features and plans never go into effect. Your contract does extend soon as you make a purchase
