LauncherPro Beta (SUPER FAST & SMOOTH Launcher!)

@ shochman, after testing ADW, i can say that is BS. why come troll?
i get the same redraws, and less customizations. LP is a far superior product. way more you can do.

I don't think he's trolling, but just telling it like it is. I had stuck with LP for a long time, but finally gave up a few days ago after trying every combination of settings available. I really hated to go to ADW because I really miss the scrollable dock and 3D drawer.

However I have had no redraws for days with ADW, while with LP I got them constantly. That's with all the bells and whistles enabled in ADW. It would be different if the dev could tell us what settings to turn off to stop the problem. However I think I have tried everything and set the settings to the minimum.

If the problem is ever resolved I will go back to LP.

OK!

I finally found a way to make LP work reasonably well - At least as fast as the Froyo stock launcher, and maybe better! dancedroid

The biggest problems I saw were constant screen redraws and slow response time. Here is what I found to fix these problems: Fine tuning the MinFree settings (improving on Android's multitasking) | Android Central

MinFree is a free application that modifies how your Droid handles free memory. I use BBv0.4, and I'm guessing that the values Pete set didn't play well for LP - at least for me.

Once you load MinFree, go to Menu >> Presets, and select "Aggressive". After you fool with it for awhile and like what you see, you can set Menu >> Apply at Boot.

Then, under the LP Preferences, I set the following:

  • General Settings: Keep in Memory=On, Motorola Droid hack=Off
  • Advanced Settings
    • Memory Usage Settings: Memory Usage Preset=High
      • Use homescreen caches=On
      • Homescreen cache type=Compressed
      • Build caches as needed=Off
      • Clear caches on exit=Off
      • Prevent force-closes=Off
  • Homescreens: High quality scrolling=On, Minimum Scrolling Speed=25
  • App Drawer: Use 3D Drawer=On, Opening speed=2
  • Screen Previews: Opening speed=2
Note: I still see the occasional "missed screen press" on the launcher screens, but it doesn't seem as bad now.

Let me know if this helps!

Cheers,

AzJazz

Having recently converted to Simply Stunning 4.4, I have been noticing increased home screen redraws myself...

So, I just installed the minfreemanager app with aggressive settings and I'm trying the default high memory preset in launcherpro... will use the phone the rest of the day and let everyone know if this helped or I ran into problems.

By the way I only run 3 homescreens, a few widgets, 2D app drawer (plus quickdesk and widgetlocker)... trying to keep it uncluttered for better performance. Homescreen stuff runs fluidly once it is loaded up, but the constant redraws have been bothering me lately. Often, even just locking/unlocking my screen would cause a redraw! (again I use widgetlocker but should that alone cause the phone to dump LPs memory?) I hope this reduces them.

I would bet it is widgetlocker, due to how the app works. Essentially it is another home replacement app. Switching from one launcher to another and back almost always causes a redraw.

what is a redraw exactly.. i see it over and over and just finally asking today..

I believe it simply means to draw again, like you'd expect it to mean.

In this case, instead of having something in memory, the program has to take time to bring it up from scratch. It's a trade off on how much you want this program to take up memory. If it uses a lot of memory, then redraw is short, but other things will lag.

Is there an easy way to uninstall Launcherpro? I'm not digging it.

Two ways.

1) Settings
2) Applications
3) Manage Applications
4) Select LauncherPro
5) Press "Uninstall"

Or

1) Market
2) Downloads
3) Select LauncherPro
4) Press "Uninstall"

LauncherPro definitely has the best 3D app drawer out of all the launchers I have tried. The scrolling is much better and a lot smoother.

I could get to like Launcher Pro, but am sticking with OpenHome for now. I think the missing feature that's a deal-breaker for me now is not being able to customize the font (especially text size) for shortcuts. I can see why it's popular though.

Are you using scrollable widgets?

I know you didn't ask me this question, but that's interesting...

I finally got my phone to stop the constant redraws with LP and it's fast again. I uninstalled two things: MixZing (just because I had installed it the other day) and SportsTap (because it hogs resources and all there is is baseball right now). As is the strange case with these things, the effects weren't IMMEDIATE, but later tonight, my phone was zippy again.

I wonder if getting rid of Sportstap (and its scrollable widget) made a difference? I hope MixZing wasn't the issue, because finally there's a decent music app with an EQ.

Yes, scrollable widgets are definitely a problem in their current implementation.

As it stands now, any time a scrollable widget is killed (due to low memory, crashing, etc.), it will bring the launcher down with it, so next time you return home everything will have to be reloaded.

We're working on changing the way these widgets work so that they won't bring the launchers down with them.

Are you using scrollable widgets?

I am using Pure Calendar's Agenda widget with scrollable enabled in ADW, and I was using it with LP. The scrollable agenda is kind of a deal breaker for me. I can go back to LP and turn off scrollable to see if that is causing the problem if that is any help?

Okay, I did a quick test.

1) Set LP back as my home app.
2) Turned off scrollable widgets in LP
3) Deleted my Pure Calendar widget, then put it back onto LP home screen with the scrollable option disabled.
4) Turned off the 3d drawer. Set all options in LP to the minimum.
5) Rebooted the phone.
6) After everything was up and running well, I started up three apps:
7) Started up Google Maps and set it to navigate.
8) Started the Market
9) Started the stock Froyo browser
10) Pressed the home key and my home screen was blank therefore LP had to restart/redraw.

The only other widgets I have are Beautiful widget and Power widget. If there's anything else I can try, let me know.

It doesn't matter whether the scrollable widgets option is enabled or not, if you have a scrollable widget on your homescreens you'll suffer from that problem.

Edit: Oh, you mean you disabled the option for scrolling on the Pure Calendar widget itself? I'm not sure how that widget is coded. If it keeps an open cursor to its provider, it will bring the launcher down when it goes down.

Try removing that widget altogether and see if the issue persists.

BTW, I just did the same test as you (minus the pure calendar widget) and it returns to LP fine without redrawing. Perhaps is something in your phone/ROM that disagrees with LP?
