Leak .242?

SamuriHL said:
Well your question confused me. I mean, why would I wanna stay on a leak if the OTA is out? LOL. The whole point of the HoB is to move from update to update without losing data. I get the feeling that people might be confused between "leak" and "ota". Like they're somehow different. They aren't. A leak is a potential ota candidate. Meaning 242 could end up being the OTA update. Not guaranteed, of course. But if it is, great. If not, then a new leak will come 3 weeks before the OTA is released. And I'll simply move to the next one with the HoB.

I gotcha. You cleared some stuff up for me!

The issue with the 235+ leaks is that you can't go back to 905. So you'll never be able to TAKE the OTA um, actually OTA. It just has to be installed using dark magic that's built into the HoB or Matt's unstick script. That's what allows us to move from one leak to another without having to FXZ to 905. This is important because all updates until the next OTA will ONLY update 905. You see the inherent problem with the 235+ updates. If you can't go back to 905, then how the hell do you install a new update that's only designed to update 905??? The answer is that we can flash system, preinstall, and webtop from 905. That's not enough, however. The update is expecting to patch the boot.img from 905. And we can't flash that due to the security. The trick is that if you flash the boot.img of the update that you're trying to install, then the update doesn't need to patch it and will assert against it and install properly. That's Matt's magic method for moving us from one leak to another. I automated the boot.img creation in the HoB. It works so well that when 242 was found, the person who found it used the HoB to install it on top of 238. BEFORE I even knew it was out. LOL! A testament to how flexible and powerful the HoB really is.

And there's nothing wrong with that. I have a DEEP appreciation for your caution. Far too many people who "don't get it" just jump in anyway and when things go wrong, instead of taking time to read anything and maybe learn what's going on, expect hand holding for stuff they haven't a clue about. So, I TRULY appreciate that you're being patient and waiting.

I have almost been talked into installing the 232 to leak twice now and a couple other people have told me to go up to 235. I am very cautious when it comes to my Bionic. It cost me a great deal of money, since I'm only 16 lol

There's NOTHING wrong with being cautious. When it comes to a phone that has a locked bootloader, that's a great attitude to have. So kudos!

Lol thanks! One random question though

Gags.. I know that this was on another thread but the question wasn't really answered. Or atleast not clearly. Should I do a factory reset on my Bionic when the ICS OTA officially comes out?

I intend to. In fact I'm FDR'ing tomorrow on 242. Do you have to? No. But think of it in the analogy of Windows 7 and Windows 8. Can you do a Windows 8 upgrade of Windows 7? Sure. (in theory....they've failed on EVERY single machine I've tried it on....meh) Should you? Debatable. I'm a fan of a clean start on a new OS. That analogy holds true when going from GB to ICS. Sure, they wrote a decent upgrade script...but a clean start will give you the maximum benefit of the new OS.

To me the difference is how they come to me. If i weren't a member of this wonderful forum and on stock, unrooted .905 (which I am), if I pressed "Check for Updates" I won't see .232, .235 or .238. If .242 is official, then that's what I see. If I want .232, .235, .238 or .242 now the only way is to install it manually.

And that's the ONLY difference between a "leak" and the OTA official update. Any one of those builds COULD have been the OTA had VZW signed off on them. If they sign off on 242, then those of us who went to it are done and will have been running the update that will be pushed out "OTA" for several weeks before that happens. To me OTA isn't the big thing.....the leak of a new FXZ is the significant event IMO. Until that happens, once people take the OTA they're going to be in the same boat as the rest of us until the new FXZ happens. Meaning, brick your phone, you'll come crying to me in my thread to fix it. ;)

What about if I upgraded to 232 and didn't FDR and my phone has been running beautifully...what I'm asking is if I use the hob to get on the ota when its available, will that make any difference if I don't FDR since the OS jump has already been made flawlessly in my case?

It's not really a question that can be answered with any degree of certainty. We've been told by Team EOS (who make roms for the Xoom and a few other devices) that ICS and JB are very impressive when doing upgrades from one build to another. The whole idea behind the HoB was to move from build to build without having to whack your data. If it's working great for you right now, then I recommend following my procedure to the letter. Which is to do a cache wipe after installing the update in recovery. The Android upgrade script will kick off on first boot after that and go through all your system data and apps and adjust anything that needs to be adjusted. ICS is much more robust in this area than GB ever was. So, try it...see what happens, and be prepared that if things start getting screwy that an FDR might be needed.
