MattyP's .215 Leak Classroom

Battery Training information courtesy of "FoxKat", our resident battery guru:

Meter calibration for Droid RAZR & RAZR MAXX;
  1. Power off the phone (press and hold the Power button, then select "Power off" from the pop-up menu).
  2. Plug the Stock Motorola charger into the wall outlet, then plug the Stock Motorola USB Charging cable into the Motorola charger, and finally plug the other end of the cable into the phone.
  3. The phone will boot itself into the "Charge Only" mode. This is identified by first the large Red M logo, followed by a large Battery icon with a "floating" level and percentage of charge in numbers.
  4. After 10 seconds or so, the display will shut off, but the charging continues.
  5. Allow the charger to continue uninterrupted for 3 hours minimum (Droid RAZR), or 5.5 hours minimum (Droid RAZR MAXX). It's OK to allow it to charge overnight in this mode. The charger will shut itself off when the maximum charge has been reached so there is no fear of "overcharging" or damaging the battery/phone.
  6. Once charged to 100%, you may remove the phone from the charger. To check the charge level at any time during charge, briefly tap either volume up or down and release. In about 3 seconds the display will wake and show the charge level, then after 10 seconds or so will shut down again.
  7. After the initial charge to 100% with power off, power up the phone and use normally but pay attention to the battery as it nears the "Low battery" warning (Gingerbread shows at 15%, ICS shows at 10%).
  8. Once the phone displays the "Low battery" warning at 15% (10% ICS), repeat steps 1 through 7.
Now you may use your phone normally. Repeat the above procedure about every 2 months for the Droid RAZR and every 2-3 months for the RAZR MAXX (more often if you are a heavy user, less often for light use).

FoxKat.. what about apps that burn down battery. can they be used to get the battery down from 100% to say 10 to 15%. Then charge as suggested above??

Check to see that it is not set too global data... settings --->more... (under data usage) ---> mobile networks ---> network mode ---> select LTE/CDMA.

It's definitely NOT in global - it's set (manually in the deeper settings) to 3G CDMA auto and that is verified in the more accessible network settings. Good idea, but I'm on top of that - I have to be since I live in a 3G/1X area where 4G is a figment of our imagination.

Well, you definitely have that covered, lol. I'm actually in the same situation...live in a 3g only area. There have been a couple times that I've had problems and discovered that it did revert back to global.

The only time I've had a problem with excessive drain and hot phone is when I had both data and Wi-Fi on but no connection for either. Sometimes if you have a weak signal, it can cause the same. Something is working excessively in the background. Gsam battery monitor can help give you more information about what may be running amuck.

Battery life has GOT to get better....

Thanks all for making this too easy!!!

LIke u, I just installed 215 and noticed a HORRID battery drain. Ibebtried switching back and forth from 3G to 4g, and have to staynw 3G to get thru a day. 4g usage, requires charge before lunch. I also noticed WIFI drainage increased, too. AT this point my RAZR is a basic flip phone if I need to be away frim a charger.
I ran The calibration method twice in the last week and read that reset has not cured issue.
Any ideas are needed and appreciated. Thanks.

I made the leap to .215 last night and after the first few hiccups like the home screen crashing upon first login, it has been noticeably more responsive. Very easy, thanks for the step by step instructions MattyP! Next step... Root

I do have a question though, I thought I read that Chrome replaced the browser in .215, is this correct? I still have the original browser icon and when some options display I see Chrome as an option, however I can not find it in my app list. After restarting, I received an update for Chrome but I am still unable to find the app on my phone. Any ideas?

Thanks!

It didn't replace the browser. Just added chrome. I don't know why it's not in your apps list. Did you try updating it?

I have the 215 leak as well.. Chrome is not in my apps list to update either...

When I pull up the playstore it displays that Chrome is already installed. It also shows in My App List in the play store and also in my app list when I go to manage apps in the phone settings. Just not my app list and nowhere on my home screen. I was able to find the Chrome 3x2 Bookmarks Widget.

Are you using the stock browser? Open your app drawer, swipe screen to the right to go to your favorite apps (tab with the star at top right). See if it got placed in there.

Thanks Tis. Okay, so this makes me earn my newbie status given by df. My app screen was set to frequent, rather than all apps.

Lol...newbie or not, I would have been going through the same hoops trying to figure out why the critter wasn't where it belonged.
