mlb baseball

Looks like there is already an update available in the marketplace. I will be listening to the Pirates/Orioles game on the way home to see if there are still issues. Please update and do the same!

can anyone confirm an update?

They did an update and it's version 1.0.2

However, they didn't tell us what the update was for. In fact in the comments section of the market place some folks are inquiring about what was included. They are still failing. Hopefully people here who actually had problems can tell us if those problems were resolved.

Downloaded the update and listened to the Pirates/Orioles game for about 45 minutes. Flawless. But once again, I'm listening on a fast, reliable WiFi connection with my phone about a foot from my router.

Mine says "version 3" in application settings, so I assume I'm running 1.0.2 as well. Listened to both feeds (pirates/orioles) on the way home and had issues with both cutting out and requiring a manual restart. The pirate feed had less issues than the oriole, but was lower quality too...

There is no reason, and I mean no reason that it can't handle streaming on 3G radio. I use Pandora which I'm sure has a higher bit rate. Hell, I streamed baseball from this app on my EDGE iPhone fine last year.

Wow, that lack of video sucks.. it was probably my most anticipated app and my favorite app as an iPhone user. Since I never had 3G here with the iPhone I'm not exactly missing the feature, but hell since I do have a good 3G connection was sure as hell looking forward to it.

I sent an email to the customer support, doubt I'll get any real answer, but it's worth a shot.

I'd go with extra innings because of this, but my work schedule really requires me to watch games on the computer.

Yea..but on your iphone if you had say a text message or email and wanted to reply youd have to close the app. I hated that! And the live video was horrible anyway. And now they want you to pay extra for that. Not saying it wouldn't be nice but I am happy with this app so far.

Yeah, I agree.. not being able to multitask really hurt the app.. if I wanted to use Google Maps and then listen to a game through my car radio it was impossible.

But I disagree with the quality being terrible, it was good for what it was. A 3.5 inch screen, if I had a solid (Wi-Fi, but I'm guessing a solid 3G one would do fine too with some good buffering) the quality was good and it was something better then just listening if I was sitting somewhere for an hour or something without a laptop and Wifi access (which isn't that common, but still).

[Full disclosure: I am an employee of Major League Baseball Advanced Media as a Gameday Datacaster (I sit in the press box and input the play-by-play data for Gameday). I do not speak for MLBAM, nor do I have any information about the workings of the At Bat app. So don't ask.]

My experience with MLB.tv (which they seem to update every season) has been that it's usually fairly buggy at the start of the season, and after a couple of weeks the kinks are worked out, and by mid-season, everything is awesome. Part of the problem with beta testing these programs has to be that you don't have games during the winter, so many problems won't crop up until the games start being played.

I have no doubt that by the middle of April, this app will be running fantastically, and I'm sure that in the future we'll have live video of the games. But since I'll be mainly using this app to follow games when I won't be able to watch video anyway, play-by-play audio only is just fine by me.

Thanks Larry. BTW, sounds like a fun job! Know if they are looking for someone to do this in Denver? :)

They usually have a few openings every offseason (and yes, it's the most fun job I've ever had, though not at all easy to do, and at times very stressful). The Hardball Times usually publicizes the openings for them, so keep a look out after the season.

I suspect that some of the problems folks are experiencing originate with the broadcasts at the spring training parks. Keep in mind that the stations broadcasting these games have to be linked to parks they don't use during the regular season. I'm guessing that some of those parks may have less than state-of-the-art equipment and/or equipment that hasn't been adequately tested prior to the start of spring training.

No inside info here, but I did notice that the Padres/Mariners game from Arizona yesterday was considerably less "optimal" than the Yankees and the Orioles games I accessed at different times. And the difference appeared to be in the quality of the originating broadcast, not the internet streaming.

I have a feeling that some of the kinks Larry noted at the beginning of the season stem from some stations not being especially vigilant about the quality of the broadcasts. After all, relatively few folks are listening to exhibition games and by the time the stations optimized their broadcasts the teams would be gone.

All in all, I'll be screaming if the quality of the "At Bat" service is severely compromised when the regular season is underway. But at this point, I'm willing to put up with some glitches.

I may be in the minority but I LOVE the app. streaming audio for all of the spring training redsox games so far and I have no audio outage and do not have to restart at all. I think this app will be great and I have never had so much access to audio for a tiny price. Any additions would be great but I am happy with the purchase as is and am glad it hit the market.

kind of offtopic

but how easy is it to get a refund? when you uninstall is it an option? do you have to email the developer?

All you have to do is go back into the market, go to downloads and select uninstall for that particular program. It will mention the fact that you will not be charged after uninstall. No emails or additional effort required.

There was an update today, anyone know what it was or did?

Had a little problems with the Mets/Nats audio today, hope it was just a minor inconvenience.

I'm willing to bet the live video will be added and I hope all the bugs are worked out for the ST games.
