Motorola Droid Case Reviews

Thanks everyone. The pictures of the ebay case were great, PJ_ED and and pwjone1. I just bought the ebay case. It's not the exact case I want, but it looks good, and the exact case I want doesn't exist yet. And it's only $10.00! I don't even have my Droid yet, but I'm getting accessories.

On waterproof cases -- I'm a big fan of aquapac.
AQUAPAC Waterproof | Official Site | Waterproof Bags, Cases, Drybags
Aquapac US Store

You can also get their stuff on Amazon. I ordered from them even before they had a US store. They make good quality products and are easy to deal with. Prices are good and the plastic cases are vey sturdy and really are waterproof.

Now I'm wondering -- I'll post on another thread. I didn't want to put a screen protector over the screen, but if I did that I could shove it in my bag without worrying to much about the screen, given that it will be in a case.

Thanks again. This is like the old days of Palm, when people spent untold hours messing around with their devices to get them just exactly right. I like it!
Thanks MSZV for the intel on the waterproof bags. I'll check into them. I used their products a long time ago. Materials back then sucked so I kind of forgot about Aquapac. I'll give them another shot. I see from their web site they have come a long way from the past. I am sure the materials have come a long way as well.

I have the body glove. Took a small file to the tabs and 1 min later easy on and off. Go slow and check. Works great now.

That was the ticket! GREAT IDEA!!! Goes on and off just right now!

For added security, I bought a Golla bag off ebay for $7.00, and after a few in-and-out cycles, it's now a great sleeve for the Droid in the BG!

Here's a link, also comes in black:

My solution was a Case Logic Horizontal Leather PDA Phone Case I got from Target for $20. The Droid is a perfect fit lengthwise, width, and thickness-wise. It has a simple belt clip which holds very tight, and the flap closure is magentic. I tested the magnetic closure to see if it would screw with the Droid sensors, and it did not. I can place the Droid in the case in any orientation without the magnets affecting the phone.

I will not be using any skins on the Droid since I use it often in the Home Dock and Car Mount. I've never been a fan of skins, anyways.

Is it hard to pull the Droid out of the case when you need to use it? Thanks in advance and sorry if previously answered.

One thing I wondered about with the G1 GTMax case, is the difference in the phone sizes:

G1: 117.7 mm x 55.7 mm x 17.1 mm
Droid: 115.8 mm x 60.00 mm x 13.70 mm

So the G1 is narrower than the Droid. The Droid volume is less, but I was concerned about the width. The pictures out on eBay looked a little tight, but the phone does seem to fit fine, from what I could tell from your pictures. On that type of pouch, I usually would put the longer (nominally back) side towards the outside of the pocket, figuring that the added protection is needed there, with the glass/screen towards the inside (body). If it gets jolted, then, mostly that would be from the outside, and you have maximized protection of the screen, by facing it inward. Does by any chance the GTMax case have a stiffened/protective back? Some of this sort of cases do, to kind of backup the padding.

I'm not sure about the GTMax case, this one is the OEM G1 case and it does not have a stiff back. One thing to note, if the phone was facing the other way inside the case a bit of the stitched on trim would come in contact with the screen since the front "flap" is a bit smaller.. thats one of the reasons I prefer to have the glass facing the larger back so it only comes in contact with the soft material. The fit inside concerning width is just about what I would consider perfect, the fact that the droid is not as thick as the G1 compensates for it being a little wider.

The GTMax G1 case showed up yesterday, and I'll probably use it for a bit more before posting something more detailed, but at first pass, I do notice that it's smaller than the Sharp case, and I'd say that it so far at least, seems to be slightly better. The lining material is closer to what I ran into with the HTC OEM cases, a little better at cleaning the screen, some sort of microfiber I'd guess. The outside surface is pretty "grippy", so that makes it easier to get out ot the pocket. And the front side is not quite large enough, so it's better to face the phone towards the back, as you said in your post. It's a bit odd that the GTMax G1 case is pretty tight on the Droid, as the volume of the Droid is less than with the G1. The ideal case is probably bigger than the GTMax G1, and smaller than the Sharp. But at $4, the GTMax is hard to beat, at least until something more Droid specific comes along.

I just picked up the "leather-like" 2-pc hard case. It actually fits snug on the phone and gives the phone a more "secure" hold as opposed to the "slick" feel. The case does add some resistance when sliding out the phone to use the physical keyboard. Maybe this will get better when it wears a bit.

I also picked up the Ghost Amour kit which I will try sometime in the next few days to see how it works. Its probably a good guess that the hard case will fair better if you accidently drop the Droid (god forbid!!).

More to follow in the next few days...
I got this one as well. The rep at the VZW store steered me away from the Body Glove one. He said that not only is it a ***** to get off, but the rubber will eventually separate from the plastic. I found the fit to be tight at first in regards to the keyboard slide, but its gotten better with use. I will stick with this one until something better comes along. Incipio and Seidio are both working on Droid cases and I will hold out till one or the other is available.

I have the Body Glove and like it a lot.
The Docking station is nice but there is an app that will give you the same info and save $30. I saw the "custom docking station" someone else made out of a card board box. It is hilarious :)
I wish some one would make a "button attachment" that the body glove could snap into and be able to mount to the auto windshield/dash. The main concern is that they fall off sometimes.

hey!, get your own ideas!:icon_ devil:

That Elega looks like the winning case for me. Does the case muffle the speaker when it rings? Thats the only thing I'd be worried about with this one, and the only change I could see them making to adapt it to the Droid.

Check out page 9 of this thread. I posted several pictures and a review of my Sena Elega. Great holster and it fits great! Probably the nicest leather holster I have ever purchased. Clip is a leather covered slip over style. So far it is wearing very good...very tight and the leather isn't wearing off. I honestly don't know what they will do to make this case specifically for the droid other than put it in a different box. It fits great.

Phones that are dimensionally similar to the Moto Droid/Milestone

Since everyone on eBay (and now some of the vendors) seems to be trying to cram a Droid into the iPhone cases, I thought I'd list off some other phones that are of similar sizes, open up the shopping options a bit until more Droid specific cases show up (although I see one of the custom makers is on-line now, more on that later). Note that cases that fit these phones may not fit the Droid, due to different form factors, rounded corners, etc., and of course if they have cutouts, they won't line up, but at least some of the holsters might fit, YMMV (dimensions in Bold might be tight):

Moto Droid: 115.8 x 60 x 13.7 (mm)
Apple iPhone 3G/3GS: 115.5 x 62.1 12.3
HTC Touch Pro2 US: 117 x 60 x 17
HTC Touch Pro2: 116 x 59 x 17
HTC Tilt 2: 115.4 x 59.2 x 16.4
HTC Dream (T-Mobile GA1): 117.7 x 55.7 x 17
HTC (T-Mobile) Dash 3G: 117 x 61 x 12
HTC Imagio: 117 x 61 x 13
HP iPAQ 600: 117 x 60.3 x 17.5
Sony Xperia X10: 119 x 63 x 13
Moto Sidekick Slide (T-Mobile): 117 x 61 x 17
LG enV Touch: 115 x 55 x 17
Samsung OMNIA HD 123 x 58 x 12.9
Samsung OminaPRO B7320 118 x 59.8 x 12.6
Nokia N97 US 117.2 x 55.3 x 15.9

I went through the whole Blackberry (RIM) line, mostly they're a different form factor, shorter and wider, but this one is typical:

Blackberry Bold 9000: 114 x 66 x 15

I think that a lot of the vertical holsters were made for the Blackberrys, and that's probably why they run short. Of course, in some cases, that might be intentional, so that you can get the phone out of the holster.

I did notice that a lot of the same cases are listed for the HTC Touch Pro2 and the Droid, so I think the eBay vendors are already selling those as fitting the Droid. And of course the GTMax case is actually for the G1.

There are of course thousands of different phones, pretty sure I did not identify all the close ones here.

Well, I don't think the Droid target demographic is going to quite match up with this, but by my calculation, a Moto Droid should fit:

Pink Crocs o-dial Carrying Case - X'mas Gifts For Her

Bit loose, z-axis, maybe :) If the color is not to your liking, it comes in basic black. Has a belt loop on the back.

Oh yea, so now you have something real ugly for your phone as well as your feet.....:rofl3:

Yep.

The scary bit is that someone will probably see this, and say: That's my look! Get matching Crocs for both the feet and phone. I read an article on Crocs in the NY Times, kind of opposing people buying $30 shoes, but I have to admit, I see a lot of RNs and even Docs wearing them, Restaurant workers, etc., and so people on their feet all day must like them. They are comfortable. Maybe that's what shoes should be about. To each his own, I figure.

Now that the Droid is out in the wild, please help us build a detailed FAQ of Droid Case reviews! Let us know what you went with, why, what you like/dislike, cost, etc..

Thanks!

I purchased the Body Glove. Feels good in my hands and fits well on the Droid. However, extremely hard to get the back cover off in order to remove battery. I chose to use the "Rooster" as my alaram clock. It went off at 5:00 a.m. in the morning and my Droid froze up, and the only way I could stop it from going off was to remove the battery. It took me 3-minutes of continuous pulling and twisting before I could get the cover of the Body Glove off. Periodically my Droid does freeze up and I have to remove the battery, which means the top of the Body Glove is now fitting more like a rubber band on one side :-(. Other than these couple of things, I like it.

I wonder if someone that has a Body Glove could comment on the case openings in the back. When I looked at one picture of it:

324600160_o.jpg

it kind of looks like the Camera LEDs for "flash" might be covered up.

The Body Glove site doesn't seem to have a "back" picture:

Body Glove | Store

although I do notice, they're ship date is out at 12/4, so the demand must be pretty good.
