Motorola Droid Case Reviews

Invisible Shield? Not This Time...

So I tried putting the ZAGG Invisible Shield on my Droid. I really liked it on my old Treo and my iPod Touch, but it was a non-starter in this case...

I'm sure it would offer all of the protection as before, but it seems the kit isn't quite ready for Prime Time yet; lots of little pieces that just don't fit together very well to cover the Droid.

Strictly from a subjective point of view, I didn't care for how the Droid looked with the shield attached; the matte "industrial" finish of the back and sides looked... Well, "cheap" is the word that comes to mind; it looked tacky with the shiny Invisible Shield in place.

The screen cover was also just a shade too large to fit properly within my Droid's screen borders, and also took an unacceptable amount of screen sensitivity away.

It may work for others, but it didn't for me. Standard disclaimers apply.

Just wondering if anyone has found a suitable arm holster for the Droid? I didn't see anything yet in this thread. I know I could clip it to the waist but I trust the arm ones more for running.

I would think that anything that works with the iPod Touch/iPhone would work for you; they're awfully close to the same size as the Droid.

OI also installed the clear armor. It does not cover the sides or corners very well. I also didn't care for the rubbery texture and the overall gloss it gave to the Droid I really
prefer the matte finish. Peeled it off a couple days later and went back to the clear Verizon case. Its really to thick and hinders the top row of the keyboard. Are the seidio cases thinner? Thanks

Well, if they're running, they would want something fairly secure, but the iPhone and the Droid are far enough apart, size-wise (especially the z-axis), and in form factor (rounded vs square back and edges), that you really cannot assume that the cases will work on both.

See also http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-accessories/497-motorola-droid-case-reviews-27.html#post41938 (#267) for dimensions on Droid, various other phones. If you have to have an iPhone case, the 3GS variants are closer to fitting.

If you don't want to wait for a case specifically made for the Droid, I had an original Motorola Q with a Fortte case and my droid fits into it perfect. I was thrilled to find out there was no need to buy another case. Here is the one I have: Leather case for Motorola Q Lateral Pouch. If you click on the Personalize link they have a ton of different colors and options and build to your order.

Another way to save if you had a moto Q or other moto phone using mini usb prior to your Droid, you can get a micro to mini USB adaptor and reuse all your previous chargers. So no need to buy extra charger for office or car charger, just get the adaptor. These adaptors are all over the net, here's one from Amazon for $1.27

Amazon.com: OEM Motorola MicroUSB USB EMU MU Adapter for RAZR2 V8 V9 V9m Q9h model SKN6252: Cell Phones & Service

There are various Moto Qs, but loooking at a typical one, dimensionally:

Moto Q: 116 x 64 x 11.5 mm
Moto Droid: 115.8 x 60 x 13.7 mm

I would think the (z-axis) thickness dimension mismatch might be a problem, for some cases made to fit the Q. Of course, Qs had keyboards, in general case makers don't want to make them too tight, so maybe it would work. Still, Q's volume is less than a Droid's so...

The thing I notice is that eBay resellers have a very small number of Droid specific cases up, the plastic ones in what must be close to an infinite number of color variations tend to dominate the listings, but most of the rest seem to be cases made for the iPhones. However, the iPhone cases are going to be a pretty tight fit, so I'm surprised that nobody has figure out a little bit bigger phone, in the x-y-z dimensions. The HTC Touch Pro 2, for example, is a bit bigger than the Droid (bigger in x, same in y, bigger in z), so you pretty much know a Droid will fit in a case for that phone, albeit might be a few mm loose. Still, you want to be able to get a phone quickly out of it's case, that's was the main drawback that caused me to stop using a Cellet Bergram on the Droid, that definitely was an iPhone case that was too tight.

I would like a nice leather or nylon case that holds the phone horizontally and securely on my belt. I am hesitant to buy one yet because it might be an Iphone case and will be too tight. Anybody recommend me one? Thanks

My phone is naked and I have it in the lock holster that is sold in VZW. I don't like leaving my phone naked but it looks so much nicer than having one of those hard plastic cases on it.

I may look into something in leather because I do not like that the back of my phone is all exposed but I'll see.

I may have to pick up a case anyway just for those times when I am not carrying it on my belt. Doesn't seem to be too many different options out there thus far.

I have the ZAGG shield on the screen only and it is great. I don't usually like the way it looks on the entire phone so I know where you are coming from.

I had a Zagg on a Palm TX and it OS pretty grippy
Not sure how it will affect the sensitivity/useability

I have the ZAGG shield on my screen. It feels sticky/grippy for about a day or so but now it feels perfect. And it doesn't affect sensitivity at all as far as I can tell

The Verizon store had a few horizontal leather cases initially, but when I bought my Droid (3 days in), they were already out. But there are Droid specific cases just becoming available, just now, here's one from Easycase:

D2 Custom-Made Leather case for Motorola Droid A855 - eBay (item 370294299023 end time Dec-21-09 01:57:44 PST)

Looks pretty nice, and I've seen reviews that EasyCase quality is reasonable. Prices are maybe a tad high, at $40.

Down from that about $15 are cases from Verizon. I notice that their web site now shows stock (it did not for a while, and the store ran out quickly). Here's what that looks like:

and a web link:

Enter your location

(lots of time these phone links don't work, if this doesn't show for you, just go to verizonwireless.com and peck down) That probably means that supply on the cases is catching up (finally) a bit with demand.

The main thing with cases of this type is probably to avoid the ones with magnets, so that it doesn't inadvertently switch the phone over into clock or car mode and run the battery down. That's the guidance in the Tip sheet that the Verizon associates are given. You would normally face the screen inward, let the back take any impacts, but with a magnet closure, you could put the phone in the wrong mode. You might also want to consider the plastic holster arrangement that Verizon has, that's pivots so can be horizontal, and is reasonably protective (save maybe for the camera lens). I see that's back in stock, also.

I've seen Droid sales projections of 600k units by YE 2009, so it's maybe not surprising that the cases would come in and out of stock, as supply needs to catch up with demand. I have not seen anything by way of an actual Moto Droid phone shortage, so Moto seems to be keeping up with demand, but of course there just was Black Friday, and a lot of sales will be in December for Christmas. Launch sales were apparently in the 100k-ish range, depending on who you believe, but it was somewhat a "soft" launch compared to the advertising that's going on now. But I think Apple moved 1M at launch of the iPhone 3GS, so the Droid is not yet into that sales range. Still, it's early, and in many ways, what moves iPhones is friends, so as more friends get Droids, there might be a domino effect. And I do notice that eBay is now reselling Droids, at quite a markup, an indicator of at least a potential spot shortage. Time will tell, but clearly, there's more demand than supply of Droid specific cases, for now, possibly will just get worse as Christmas nears.

If they build it, WE will come. I wonder why such a delay?

Does Motorola hide phone size data and prevent 3rd party case design? I would think they want many case options which in turn would drive more interest in their phone?

Wishing I had a decent pocket case.

Guilty Case admission

I had a NiteIze case for my Samsung i760 that worked perfectly for it, but when I got the DROID, I couldn't find the perfect fit for it. Sooo . . . I put the DROID in the too-big case, wrapped some black electrical tape around it, and Voilia -- I have a perfectly functioning (albiet ugly) case. I am sure some good cases will come out soon.

I am not sure if someone already posted this. If so, my apologies.... Sena has made the Ultraslim available for the Droid and its on sale. However, its in back order at this time.

Sena Cases - Designer Leather Cases : Motorola-Droid -Ultra Slim Pouch

I decided to wait for something better to come up, so I went ahead and placed an order for the Droid Suede Jacket.

The best case, and I mean BEST case can be found at CountyComm: iphone belt case.

I have many of their products, and again, hands down, this case is rugged and perfectly fits my Droid (with Motorola plastic case on front and back).

Oh - while you are on their web site, there is a ton of cool other stuff to be had. Believe you me, I've gone broke on their site ever since I searched for a Maratac Watch Band.
