Motorola says buy elsewhere if you want custom roms. Ok hello HTC.

I'm not talking about build quality. I'm talking about overall business morality.

guys moto posted a response on their facebook. They are looking to make a more open bootloader actually.

Moto apologizes for the hastily posted "If you want to do custom roms, then buy elsewhere, we'll continue with our strategy that is working thanks."

Looks like whomever was running Motorola's YouTube page today might have gone a wee bit rogue. To recap, a comment on a video of the Atrix 4G was greeted with a tongue so sharp we had to make sure it wasn't ours. "If you want to do custom roms, then buy elsewhere, we'll continue with our strategy that is working thanks." Whoops.

The comment was deleted not too long after we first reported it. But the fallout continued, with Motorola issuing an apology on Facebook, and saying there may be a compromise for those who wish to do a little hacking:

We apologize for the feedback we provided regarding our bootloader policy. The response does not reflect the views of Motorola.

We are working closely with our partners to offer a bootloader solution that will enable developers to use our devices as a development platform while still protecting our users' interests. More detailed information will follow as we get closer to availability.

There also was this response to a followup on the YouTube page:

So we attempt to answer nearly all comments raised on this channel across over 130 videos and in a timely fashion. Sometimes we make a mistake, and the remark we agree could have been better phrased and more polite. So we do apologise, and that we will continue to monitor feedback on the wider discussion and pass that along. Thank you.

Mistakes certainly do happen, and we certainly understand the ... patience ... required when working in public. We'd cut Moto a little slack here -- but we'll also keep an eye out for any more shenanigans.

Maybe the Bionic will have an open bootloader after all....that would be awesome!!!!

I think moto is just running damage control. Hopefully they will unlock, but i doubt it. Did you see that they released an overclocked version of the droid x in China. Well looks like it can be overclocked without damage. Looks like they were holding out on us.

That response by Motorola offended me (a rooter) since I've worked so hard to convince many of my friends and family to get Droid 1s. I even got a few co-workers to get Droids as well. I'm sure this has brought a lot of business to Motorola. After this whole locked bootloader crap and public response of go elsewhere, I think I will do just that.

Many people look to me when they go to buy their computers, cellphones, and electronic devices. My upgrade is coming up in July. I don't think I will be looking very seriously at any Motorola offerings, especially if the next few releases have locked bootloaders.

My upgrade is in April. No Moto for me. According to this poll they have lost 37 customers in less then 24hrs.

this first phone company to figure out that people like to mess with things will dominate the market.

why do you think world of warcraft is the biggest mmo? not for the graphics, certainly. The gameplay..well, it can be fun at times, but pretty boring actually.

IMO, it got so huge because its so open to the modding community. Sure, they keep an eye on it and squish mods they think go a bit too far, but for the most part its very customizable, which people like to do.

Though, I'm one of those people that more or less tends to keep things as they are, I like having that option. I'm due for an upgrade, and I want a droid3, lol. I mean hell, they should partner with the modding community. The og droid (rooted/overclocked/etc) is still running with the pack...at least til the dual core phones hit, then it might finally become truly obsolete.

*edit
after thinking about it. If every moto phone was as open as the og droid, would anyone even have it anymore? Instead, the most sought after android devices is the most ancient of them all. (of the "modern era" android, ie, 2.0+)
