Motorola Tells Customer to “Buy Elsewhere” if They Want Custom ROMs

language filter is there for a reason guys : )

Please don't by pass it...thanks!!

I know that was at least partially aimed at me, sorry about that. I thought a "*" was adequate censorship, I'd go back and edit my old posts but I can't edit the ones in this thread.

I think its a marketing strategy, if you lock the boot-loader then it enables the company to stop making software updates in the future such as gingerbread or honeycomb and forces the consumer to spend more money to buy the companies newer phones --- what apple does. If I wanted the new ios on the first generation touch I cant get it hence they are forcing an upgrade. =)

This is exactly right. The Droid 1 is a frigging nightmare for Motorizon. Planned obsolesence just ain't working for them here. But then again, probably less than 1o% are rooted and running custom ROMs. But it's clearly scaring them.

Wait and see how things shake out in the next 6 months and vote with your wallet.

i wonder just what the % is that is rooted and/or running custom roms. i know a bunch of people with the Original Droid, but do not have them rooted. in the last week i have most likely told 10 to 15 people about this site and droid life. they never had a clue. my sales person told me about this site and DL. lol.

I find it interesting how many of the members here are already saying goodbye to motorola just because of a company essentially protecting not only us, but also protecting themselves. They are in a business and want to stay that way.

Create your own business with special software and watch customers destroy your product and complain saying its your fault. Finally, give away free merchandise so you can watch that same customer break it again. We do this at our own risk so let's enjoy researching and developing together instead of casting shame upon a company that actually does a great job and wants to actually see happy customers.

So, Moto is being jerks to people who want customized phones, Samsung is supposedly bribing people to delay updates... I DUNNO WHAT TO BELIEVE ANYMORE!!! lol... either way, with a locked bootloader the galaxy s 2 might be looking nicer.... We'll see how everything ends up looking I guess...

The guys statements are consistent with their actions. Locking bootloader is already their practice. It doesn't take pr to convince their stance against hacking. I still likely will be moving to a different brand since the droid is on lockdown. Regardless of what they say.

If they don’t wanna lose money on bricked phones getting returned just make the phone root friendly. Simply root...simply flash things...people would run less risk of bricking. Locking it doesn't prevent bricking....in increases the incidence of returned bricked phones. Their stance us counterintuitive

I'm lol about the whole thing. The amount of people who really care about whether threes a locked boot loader or not is so minimal that Motorola can say something like that and not even feel any impact in loss sales.

Anyway, I went back to stock a couple of weeks ago after having to deal with the malfunctions of clockwork and the bootstrap. i'll miss my cache cleaner and a couple of other apps, but that's about it.

As far as the bloatware goes, yeah I'd rather not have it but it doesn't affect the performace of the phone. I don't even notice the difference in not being overclocked.

Motorola tells customers to buy elsewhere

So in Newbie/Dummy terms, what does this mean? Does it mean that if I
root my Droid 1 that I will have problems from something they are doing or
what? Does this only effect newer phones?

Doesn't affect the D1 as its bootloader is unlocked.
This is talking about future models.

Oh, so it only affects the newer versions they are coming up with. So I
can go ahead an root this bad boy and be alright. Sounds good, for now.
I may jump ship, at a latter date, just depends on whats out there, in two
years and how I feel. For now, I'll just play with my toy and watch the
techno world get better and better.

Thats exactly what I was thinking, if they protect it and someone tries to hack it, it may break, especially if the people that are doing so have no idea what theyre doing.

I dont care about custom roms, rooting, bootloaders, or any of that. But I will never buy another phone that has Apps that have permisions to my personal data!!! That I cant uninstall!!! Shame on Google, Motorola, and every other company that has let it happen.

This isn't about bricked phones it's about being able to upgrade the OS yourself without having to buy another phone. It's about greed.

That's why I hated my devour soo much
