Name an App that Justifys a $30 data plan

for me it's the ability to log into a remote computer. I do alot of sys admin work and dont need to be at home or in the office to do it. If you are having trouble justifying the cost of data then maybe a smartphone isn't for you.
honestly I dont think you should get the fone.. if you havent needed a smart phone before, chances are you aren't gunna find the $30 extra justifiable

That about sums it up. i.e. If you have to ask, it's probably not for you.

Ok,
So smart phones are new to me.... well not new, but I have no owned one before I purchased my droid... which also means I have not had a $30 data plan bill either.

Can some one help me out and list some Apps that would justify $30s a month?
How about, all of them?

It wasn't that long ago that I was paying $30 a month for 28.8kbps internet connection on a POTS line, then nearly $100 a month for under 1mbps on DSL/Cable.

I just wish I could get the unlimited data plan, without the voice part.

Perhaps you are all looking at this wrong. If he/she is in an environment that already has access to the web and email (ie: work computer, school computer, work at home office with a computer, etc.) than the true question might be "can 30 bucks a month justify having all of what I already have but on a smaller screen, a limited battery life, and an intermittent stream of data" each month? You have to justify the convenience of basically adding one more window into the web world for that dollar per day. I see many posts here mentioning email. Who really needs access to email 24/7? Even salesman and work related employees that use email are usually subsidized by work phones, laptops, netbooks etc. for access to their email, which is usually just during the normal business hours. Personal email access is something that can be done a few times a day - no need to carry a phone for this. The internet connection is the same. We mostly all have our desktop machines and/or laptops. Is a smartphone REALLY a necessity or just another unjustified convenience that we've all convinced ourselves that we MUST have! Go back a decade when cell phones were not the norm. We all got by just fine! Now we leave our home in the morning and have a panic fit if we realize we left it sitting at home - leaving us "out of touch" for a few unconnected moments! Hello?

Don't get me wrong - I'm paying my dollar a day and loving it! Justifying it logically may be something all together different! I'll con myself every day saying I NEED it, but soup comes to nuts - do I REALLY need it? Given the choice while sitting at my desk - I ALWAYS reach for my full sized keyboard and 24" monitor to go about my daily "fix" of internet use rather than grab a pair of reading glasses, and start squinted away while my pages of my browser slowly load and I constantly use my fingers to scroll around trying to read an entire page - one that is fully visible and quite clear on my desktop 24" Samsung monitor! I'm out to dinner, WOW! Thank God I pay 30 bucks per month! Now in between mouthfuls of my 18 oz medium rare NY Strip steak I can glance down at my 3" screen and peruse my bank account to ensure I have the funds in my debit card to pay for the meal! Yea, right! Or I'm driving down the road, one hand on the wheel, the other holding my 30 dollar per month convenience tool as I erratically swerve around traffic trying to view both that tiny screen and the road ahead - all the while reminding myself how worthwhile it was to have that 30 bucks debited out of my checking account on the 21st of each month! Or - better yet. I'm walking down the street heading to my sisters house party and remember that I have my smartphone in my hip pocket. Whoopee! Now I can instantly go online and check the nearest liquor store to see just which bottle of wine I should purchase so when I arrive I don't walk in empty handed. Thank the big guy in the sky I had paid my 30 bucks! Otherwise I might have had to go all the way back home to research where the nearest liquor store is! ;)

I do pay my 30 each month. No regrets whatsover! Do I honestly feel that it's 100% justified? Hmmm. That's debatable. Perhaps I'm fooling myself and trying to convince myself that I need something that perhaps I do NOT really need. It comes down to I just WANT it, and will pay whatever pound of flesh necessary to GET WHAT I WANT! Regardless of the cost! Because I grew up on the house built just off the information highway where life speeds by like lightning, and I need a smartphone to be in vogue. Just like I needed my pager years ago. And then my suitcase cellphone phone at 2 bucks a minute. And the following years with the newer phones that were getting smaller and smaller and cheaper by the minute. And now they are getting bigger again as I need the larger screen for internet viewing. And back to monthly plans which are approaching the scale of my car payments. Yes! I can justify 30 dollars per month for a data plan. Because if I don't - all the years and thousands of dollars spent getting to this point were a waste.:yeahbaby01::r_c: cuskit..

I discontinued my $47/mo cable internet service and now use my Droid for ALL my internet access for $30/mo. For me it's not only the cost savings, but the convenience of having the internet available wherever I am.

Give me a way to hook up a full-sized monitor & keyboard and I'd do the same. Hell, make a true 'docking station' like laptops have with a bluetooth keyboard & mouse and it'd be perfect. As it is I prefer typing & browsing on a real KVM setup. Thus the need for apps to present info from the web in a format that's easier to access on the smaller screen. Why are people clamoring for the ESPN Sportscenter app when you can access ESPN on the web right now? Because the app provides a better experience. An app-less phone would have much less appeal to me.

I understand where the OP is coming from. Mon-Fri I have access to WiFi at work & home. I got by fine with a iPod Touch to supplement the computers. Even the local watering hole has WiFi now. But still I missed not able to Google something in a WiFi free zone. Didn't happen all that often, but still ...

The easiest way for me to justify the $1/day was to compare it to other services with fees:

XM/Sirius - ~$20/month or $0.66/day
GPS Maps Updates - ~$80/year or $0.22/day
VZW Visual VM - $3/month or $0.10/day.

Just those three, off the top of my head, add up to $0.98/day. For literally two pennies a day I get to add in Google/Internet anywhere I happen to be.

Now if you don't listen to the radio or use the GPS or have to deal with many voicemails my list above probably won't apply to you. Then again you might like streaming live video with Qik or uploading photos on vacation, or just really don't want to lug around that laptop unless you really have to. Different strokes for different folks.

PERFECT! That was my reasoning too. My Droid pays for it's $30 data plan by replacing my Sirius subscription, and replacing my txt plan with data. The VVM is just a bonus that I didn't have before, but now I get for free.

It would be tough to say that any ONE app justifies the $30/month data plan, but when you combine everything this phone offers into this one handy little package, it's worth every penny to me.

Sirius if it even happens. And of course Exchange in my pocket.
