Newbie Guide to Rooting the Fascinate

Thanks, I just wanted to make sure there wasn't something simple to do to get the root back. Also, I wanted to make sure that this root tutorial would work on a phone that had been rooted and lost it due to the DL09 update. I will give it a shot and report back for anybody interested.

I see you have added a link to a different root does that mean the tutorial by Mr. Droid is not valid for the DL09 updaters?
you will not have a prob re rooting after updating...it wiped all trace of SU...this is just a more recent version i believe of rooting tutorial made after the DL09 update since Z4Mod no longer works for DL09...i believe it is easier...

yea i posted this on the day it was made, 1/15/10, the DL09 released on 1/11/10 i believe from VZW

I am new to rooting and I am not sure if Mr. Droids tutorial is z4mod or not but I can confirm it does NOT work with a phone which lost its root to updated DL09. I got hung up on section 3 "After another 20 seconds or so you will be kicked back to the C:\rootfiles prompt." would not go back to C:\rootfiles. I then started over and got hung up in section 2 after typing in adb shell the $ would not prompt.

I wanted to do this particular root because I had already done it and the other root requires odin and flashing and I have never done that, it just seems more daunting to a newbie.

EDIT: It WILL work see further post for more detail

i hear ya...I can tell you now that I think ODIN is much easier to use than ADB as I NEVER use ADB...did I mention NEVER lol....
its really simple and the directions are exact...just make sure you follow them, in order to run ClockWorkMod Recovery you have to ODIN the CWR files too so its good practice...plus if you ever botch your phone ODIN will flash all stock DL01, DJ05 and DL09 .tar's to recover your phone....in my opinion you need to have and use ODIN

The full manual method will work with DL09. The step you are referring to just takes longer. I tested this quite a bit and the longest it took was 30 minutes. If it takes any longer than 10 minutes just disconnect the phone, reboot, connect phone and try again.

You need to be careful using Odin. Or any process on any phone that involves flashing. I know quite a few people (who know what they are doing) who have bricked their phones using Odin. Including myself. I bricked one Fascinate just due to a USB cable that went bad. Also, many people have bricked by just clicking a wrong button while moving their mouse over it or clicking the wrong button.

Ok here is what has happened. I tried to do the root again starting with the root section being everything was already loaded and adb was set up. The first time back trying it I hung up on section three again without getting the C:/root, I had waited 35 minutes to no avail. I then tried it again after powering down and up my phone and I couldn’t get passed section 2 it kept telling me no rageagainstthecage file existed. So I went and deleted the files in rootfiles folder, suspecting a corrupt file and then re-extracted them back into the rootfile folder. I also decided to switch usb cords. I reran the process and this time I got all the way to the end but it told me the install_failed_already_exists. I unplugged and checked both titanium backup and barnacle wifi tether and they both now had root. So I guess it really succeeded. I did notice that my haptic was now gone and so I decided to power down and up and surprisingly it was back.

So to summarize, if you lost root from DL09 using this procedure you CAN reroot using Mr. Droids tutorial, it may take several tries and you may have to redo some of the downloads but in the end it works, thanks to all for help provided. Matt.

sorry it was such a hassle, i have used most all root methods several times just to experiment and all went well for me...some phones prove to be more receptive than others i guess lol....glad your up and running....

First Smartphone - First Root

Worked like a charm. Thanks for the knowledge. Now I'm hooked. My wife hates me more already.

Rooted ok but...

I have queitly read the instructions and was able to root both mine and the wifes phones. Oddly enough I think the DL09 update came through while I was rooting mine and the when I did the wifes the next day her's was already updated to the DL09. So now I'm stuck on DI01 and she's laughing at me.

I went in to check for updates anf innopath tells me there are no current updates, when I check the " status " it shows network error 409, I can't figure out why it says that but I think without the network the phone doesn't know theres an update ? guessing here.

I tried switching wi-fi on and off, tried a soft reset, everything I could think of to re-trigger the network, I even unfroze everything in Titanium. I shoud probably add the browser , 3g , market place everythign else is using the network , even GPS is working correctly.

Any ideas how I can push the DL09 update without a hard reset ?

The rooting instructions were spot on and couldn't have been easier but I can't have the wife laughing at me about an outdated phone.

TIA

POSTED ON XDA FORUMS:

You need to be rooted to install this update and have access to clockworkmod. Data wipe is essential. Voodoo needs to be REMOVED PROPERLY prior to installing this update. All parts should be installed, or things will stop working...such as haptic feedback, and sms. DJ05 and DL09 radios appear to be interchangeable, but heavy testing has not been conducted.

There are three parts.

Radio:
http://adrynalyne.us/files/roms/DL09modem.tar

This gets flashed via Odin, in the PDA section.

System/rom:
http://adrynalyne.us/files/roms/DL09_2.zip

Mirrors:
www.eleazar.org/Adrynalyne/DL09_2.zip
DL09_2.zip - *********** - online file sharing and storage - download

Torrent Mirror:
DL09 ROM for Samsung Fascinate (download torrent) - TPB

This gets flashed via clockwork.

Kernel:
Non-voodoo
http://adrynalyne.us/files/roms/1230_NON_voodoo.zip
Voodoo:
http://adrynalyne.us/files/roms/1230_Voodoo.zip

Note- Both of these kernels are similar to my previous test kernels, except they include boot animations. They are undervolted, and based of of jt1134's source on github. DJ05 kernels will work fine for DL09, but you should supply your own boot animation if you do not use one of the above. The stock boot animation does not work very well.

These get flashed via clockwork.

please let me know if this does indeed help you!!!

BY THE WAY I RECOMMEND NON VOODOO

Wow !

I appreciate your help but I think you just went 6' over my head.

I can follow simple instructions pretty well and maybe I just need to read A LOT more to understand what your talking about.

I am completely stock right now except for rooting and adding Titanium to freeze some apps.

Would these instructions still be applicable ? and what exactly will this do for me ?

I dont really want to flash a new ROM, I just want to try and push the update ( at least I think I do ) , the radio update would indicate to me the actual phone correct ? which is also currently working fine.

Thanks again

Ok so in laymens terms you simply need to "flash" these updates. When you root your phone you will no longer receive Verizon "OTA" aka Over the Air updates, from now on you are going to have to manually update. Pretty soon you will be able to laugh at your wife, these forums have proved to be extremely helpful. I was in your shoes not two months ago. Goto your Market and download and install Rom Manager. Once it installs open the app and goto the first option, make sure you select the proper phone, this is CRITICAL. Here is another URL for flashing ClockWorkMod. After you get CWM working you simply download the modem file from the first post i gave you and use CWM to install it, feel free to keep asking Questions!!! Fearlessness will fail!!!

moving forward

Ok,

CWM installed and ready for next step. when you say download the radio am I downloading that to PC or phone ? and then how will I get CWM to recognise it ?

I will be more comfortable just poking around once I go through the process once ( or twice , three times who knows )
