Newbie Guide to Rooting the Fascinate

Ok,

CWM installed and ready for next step. when you say download the radio am I downloading that to PC or phone ? and then how will I get CWM to recognise it ?

I will be more comfortable just poking around once I go through the process once ( or twice , three times who knows )

Next step, did you boot into recovery to make sure it is working? if you succesfully boot into recovery you need to make a backup before you do anything!!!

let me look a little deeper into the radio update while you do that, let me know when you are ready to flash

Ok so the radio gets flashed with odin, odin is used to istall the CWM on your phone here is the Odin post: II. Flashing CWM Recovery: In order to flash custom modem, kernel, and rom, this must be done.

You will need following on your pc:
- Odin: https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B0...ZDU2ZDU0ZDQ3ZWJh&sort=name&layout=list&num=50

- Installed Samsung USB Driver on your pc. If not installed, you can get it from here.
a) For 32bit window: http://www.wikifilez.com/root files/epic4g/SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_x86.exe
b) For 64bit window: http://www.wikifilez.com/root files/epic4g/usb_drivers_GalaxyS_x64.zip

- CWM Recovery package(do not unzip this): https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B0...NTJhOTE5YzFkZmI1&sort=name&layout=list&num=50

1. Place odin and CWM Recovery package in the same folder on your pc. Open odin window.
2. On your phone, download free version of Rom Manager from android market. Don't flash anything yet.....just download it and keep it closed. Turn on USB Debugging, power down your phone, and take battery out.
3. Hold volume down while plugging your phone into PC. The download mode screen should come up with android shoveling. If your phone is recognized, you should see the yellow highlite under ID:COM port. If nothing comes up, do not proceed..... unplug USB and re-install Samsung USB Driver.
4. On odin window, click PDA, search CWM Recovery package, and open it. Click start to flash the package. Don't disconnect until your phone turns off. After completion, put your battery back in and turn your phone on.
5. Open Rom Manager, select flash clockworkmod recovery, and choose samsung fascinate to flash it. After flashing is done, select reboot into recovery using Rom Manager option. This will complete the CWM Recovery flashing. On green recovery screen(if you see blue, you must ditch it by selecting 'apply sd card update zip' and execute with home button) , use volumes to move up and down, power button to execute. Select "restart the system" or "reboot the system" and execute.

So download the Modem.tar and flash with Odin

backup

I booted into recovery mode although it looke like a normal reset, asked where to load from, I selected reboot.

Then I clicked backup current rom, and it rebooted again. So i think I'm on track with you still.

I downloaded the radio file to PC in a generic documents folder for now.

DANG IT !! it's so addicting, I really didn't didnt want to start cooking again and I must have read 30 posts that said you can still do OTA after rooting... OH well ! off to the kitchen I guess ...

What's next ?

Yes that is normal, if you have indeed backed up, ues you use odin to flash the modem.tar and once again reboot. Let me know what results you get

when I select reboot system now nothing happens, it stays on the boot screen and goes into sleep mode.

Am I suppose to select one of the other options like back up and restore ? or just try a hard reset and select reboot again ?

based on your commetns above, I flash the modem.tar file even though I'm still on the boot screen ? just run the process again with the new file ?

You should have been fine with simply reboot now. it usually hangs on the reboot for a minute, but should have came back up.

Brilliant

So can you say s:I500.04 V.DL09 ?

Excellent, thank you for your patience.. phone, 3g everythign appears to be working although I did have to force close Rom manager after teh final reboot.

Now that I officially flashed, do I need to worry about actually freezing bloatware or can I simply delete to free up space items like city Id, VZnav, Bing, and some of that crap ? it seems liek I'm forced to flash 2.2 if / when it comes out so I see no reason to keep the other crap if OTA 2.2 is no longer an option, and why are there posts all over the place that say you can still update OTA after you have rooted ?

I don't mind the flashing but it can be very confusing for someone who simply wants to stop bloatware.

Well there is a chance you can indeed receive OTA so wait and see. If you download Terminal Emulator you can use it to rename all the Junkware, after you download it open it up and type "su" no quotes, then you can rename it. for example to remove city id you would type: mv CityID_1.0.27_vzw.sch.i500_12118-release.apk CityID_1.0.27_vzw.sch.i500_12118-release.apk.old It will simply rename it with will not allow it to show up in your apps menu or run at all. If you were to want City ID back you would open the emulator and type "su" again no quotes the mvCityID_1.0.27_vzw.sch.i500_12118-release.apk.old CityID_1.0.27_vzw.sch.i500_12118-release.apk Here is a link to a bunch of junkware: Apps that are safe to remove once rooted - Android Forums

If you need more help beyond this stuff feel free to PM me on here, i would be happy to assist you!!! Next you need to rom up lol. First have fun reading forums, also remember Google is your best friend when Cooking!!! Happy cooking!

I'll just keep using Titanium backup to freeze them for now, easier than going in and renaming.

If theres a chance it would go OTA it seems like 09 would have unless theres a difference with maintenance updates adn full updates ?

I noticed I picked up about 60 free mebs of Ram somehow.. I use to run around 110 and now it's showing 173. I wouldn't think that small change would make a difference.

Anyways, Thanks again. That was an awesome way to spend a midnight session.
