I am on my phone and out at the moment.

Before I would've just recommended Z4Root for down and dirty quick root...but if memory serves it was yanked from market and only available over at XDA.

If one of you knows where its at, wanna direct Jeff over there? (If its still around)

For those of you reading and having troubles, PLEASE make sure you are following directions to the letter. Don't try to skip a step. Its easy to do and can cause problems. Also make sure you are using the usb cable that came with your phone as using another is a known issue. Be patient and take your time.

For the record, I am no expert, I have just done extensive reading as I am an anal bastard in that regard. ;)

Thanks!!

kudos so far friends! I'm working on restoring my apps right now- quick side note. upon installing the Rom via Odin, I got a FAIL message in red in Odin itself. The phone booted successfully, and reports that it has 2.2.1 now, and everything seems to be working great so far, just wondering if any others reported this issue also, or if it's just something i'm not familiar yet as I am so new. Please let me know. :)

Sorry, was at lunch and was thinking I should clarify that a little...

Tapout didn't actually miss anything, as perhaps my previous thread might have implied. He has actually put together a very useful way to do it. So HUGE thanks to him for sure!!

I am merely trying to make the process a slight bit easier :)

Shdowman.. so if I read all this information correctly..I would run a backup only if I cared to..(only have a stock based Fascinate with no data to worry about) but what did you mean about contacts.. will the backup I do with the verizon process be enuff to get my phone contacts back on my "froyo" based setup after all this?? That is the only contacts I have currently on my phone and retyping them would be a killer..

Thanks for all this info.. just about ready to make the leap

Don J

All your contacts should be saved to your gmail account automatically. After you make the "leap", you will have to enter in your gmail address like you did when you first got the phone. Once it syncs, all your contacts will be back in your phone. (the whole beauty of android being google based)

Best of luck, and let us know how it turns out for ya!

Well.. I did it and it worked just as you all said it would.. have already resynced my contacts and now working on loading some apps and getting used to this new stuff..Just one quick question..what are the two new toggles that are along with wifi gps and bluetooth.. one says data and one says rotation??

Thanks again and I will let you know as things go along...

I want to root, but I can't even see my SD card contents after I install Samsung drivers. Did last months update from verizon make the contents of SD unreadable? Assuming the drivers are installed correctly, could I proceed by putting the SD in pc and dragging update file there?

Yes u can do it that way or try rebooting your pc with the phone plugged in, make sure USB debugging is checked and USB mass storage mode is turned on on the phone

After u put the update.zip on the sd card u can unmount.....if your wanting to root prior to this thread to backup apps with titanium there are a couple other ways to do it in these forums....

Personally, unless u have alot of game data why bother backing up...u really shouldnt restore 2.1 data onto a 2.2 rom....everything may not work so well

It would appear to me that Verizon has made it now that you can not have USB debugging and USB mass storage selected at the same time. All I can see on my SD card when I can briefly see it is 4 files or folders; ToolLauncher-bootstrap, Samsung_mobile_USB_Driver, Autorun, and Model name.

that means your PC is seeing your phone as a CD drive instead of mass storage...did you reboot your computer with your phone plugged in

Yes I did reboot with the phone plugged into the pc. Debugging and mass storage were enabled. When rebooted phone will not show up in my computer at all untill I unplug USB and plug back in. Then I only "see"" phone for a few swconds with the previously mentioned folders/files.

At one point you said to PM you when ready. I am confident that you could get me through this root, but I just wanted you to be aware of the driver issue. After root it may not even be an issue.

what guide are you following to root?
in menu/settings/usb settings do you have it set to ask on connection?
if not def try that...
also try a different USB cable if you arent using the one that came with the phone, or even a diff usb port on the PC...
