download the update.zip to your desktop and drag it onto the root(not in a folder) of your sd cardSo do I download the zip and tar file to my computer for steps 1 and 2 or my to my phone? Lol! I am not good with this stuff! Thanks.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using DroidForums App
so the update.zip is on the root of sd card or are all those downloaded files on your pc?what guide are you following to root?
in menu/settings/usb settings do you have it set to ask on connection?
if not def try that...
also try a different USB cable if you arent using the one that came with the phone, or even a diff usb port on the PC...
I did try the ask on connection option but the results were the same. Ditto for original and other usb cable. My intention was to use the root method at the beginning of this thread. I hve down loaded odin, update.zip, superclean tar.
its very odd you cant get your phone to be recognized on the computer...when did it stop working? have you rebooted the phone while plugged in? tried it with usb debuggin and allow mock locations checked? both unchecked?

Not sure when it stopped working as I don't plug it into pc very often. My guess is it when the last update was pushed by verizon in Jan( DL09). I have tried all you have suggested. Maybe I could do a factory reset and then see if pc will recognize.
I guess my phone is a one of a kind.
Ha are you kidding me lol...Freaky thing...just rebooted phone again and was recognized. Placed update.zip on sd card.
Really. Just powered off pnone, unplugged, am I ready?Ha are you kidding me lol...Freaky thing...just rebooted phone again and was recognized. Placed update.zip on sd card.

ODIN open
phone off and usb plugged into phone but not PC(or other way around)
hold vol down and plug usb into PC(or phone)
should now be in download mode and ODIN recognizes your phone by displaying a yellow COM port....doesnt matter which one
should be good to go just follow the thread directions

Hi, im thinkin about rooting my SF and i just want to make sure i understand everything before doing it. I'm not too sure about step 1. Do i just place the zip file in the sd card without extracting it? or do i have to extract it once i place it in the sd card. Also, in other how to root topic guides, i read that you have to install the SF drivers into your computer before starting and also to enable USB debugging. do i have to do those steps too if i'm following this guide? Thanks!
