"Official"? Bionic battery life thread

VZW sales rep here, NY Metro area. Been following this thread closely because the main thing we get with our 4G phones is "Great, but the battery sucks" and for the most part I have to say it's true (ESPECIALLY with the HTC TB).

I've had the LG Revolution on my concession with ext battery for awhile, used the Charge for a few months, and though I don't have personal experience with the TB, most of my coworkers currently use it on their concession, and if you come to my store all you see behind the desk is Thunderbolts on chargers. It's really bad and why I thought I'd try the Revolution instead (but it's not much better and takes FOREVER to charge). The Charge is somewhat decent with the extended, but certainly not enough to push back against the perception that our 4G's are horrible on battery.

So I've been watching this thread to see if the Bionic really is different (as the annoying Moto rep insists it is). I've had the Bionic since 9/9 and decided to try out the standard battery at least a week or so before getting the extended. I live in White Plains NY area where 4G is pretty much consistent, but the store I work at is 40 mins upstate where there is no 4G yet.The standard battery fared okay, with moderate use, off the charger at 9am, 4G while I'm home and half of commute (3-5 hrs), 3G @ work and 1/2 of commute to/from work (9 hrs). I was really trying to mix up the usage to get "real typical usage", so on the way to work I'd not plug in the car charger, BT streamed music for 35-40 mins each way, then about 15-20 txts at work, browsed the web an hr during downtime, streamed about 45 mins of PTI on VCast on lunch, maybe 20-30 mins talking on phone.

With this usage, I was able to get home without having to charge. Get home around 7-7:30 and it's in the warning red stage. In comparison to the LG Rev (would be dead by mid-afternoon and seemed to drain almost as fast on 3G), the Charge (would prob have to charge by 4pm) and the TB (might not have made it to lunch), this is promising. But still, once you start really streaming stuff, using GPS, doing more talking and web browsing, maybe on a day off in White Plains or NYC area with constant 4G, it will get much shorter.

So I got the extended two days ago, drained & charged it fully, and like some have said here, the reading must be off until a few cycles. I started tryna kill it from the 30% it came out the box, running navigation and streaming a movie via zumocast on 4G. it went to 20% in about 5 mins, but then stayed at 20% for an hour and a half while I played Resistance 3 (great game btw). It then warned me at 15% and 15 mins later warned me at 10%, warned me again at 5% ten mins later, and finally died 15 mins later. Definitely not reading right yet.

Yesterday I did the same routine with the extended in the phone, but made sure to actually put it through a little more, added some Zumocast streaming at work over 3G, almost an hr. Started with a fully charged battery and when I was leaving work I was at 50%. This is extremely promising and is worlds better than my experience with the LG Rev and Charge; it actually rivals my old phone the X which I had the extended for.

I'll chime in more if this holds consistent, and I'll be keeping an eye on this thread. I know it's a lengthy post here, but this interests me beyond my personal use. We get hit quota-wise on returns and so a lot of sales reps are avoiding the 4G's and just shoving customers toward the iPhone or 3G offerings, and this could be a step in the right direction to help against that. I worked in the largest store in NY Metro and prob 75% of the reps flatly refused to sell TB's, Charges or LG Revs for fear of returns due to the battery.

Oh another thing: I've seen that techs in all the carriers install task killers on customers' phones at point of sale. What they should be installing is JuiceDefender because it is a must have, please check it out if you can. There are tons of options to manage data and which apps can connect and when, and much more. My coworker put me on to it, he has a thunderbolt and he said with this app he can make it thru work without charging with moderate use. What's even more exciting is I've seen these results on the Bionic without this app (wanted to see the battery drain on close to stock as possible). If it gets any better it'll be awesome. Heck I'd be satisfied with these stats.

Awesome phone, btw

You should try to get verizon to allow customers to root their phones!!!

Before I rooted my thunderbolt I absolutely hated the battery.

I rooted it, deleted all the nice stuff verizon puts on it, put a rom on it and my phone lasts all day with moderate use. If I push it on 4g it will die. With extended battery there's no problem. (btw I shut off data when it's not used..drag down notification tab and do that)

If verizon allowed people to root their phones they wouldn't have as many returns.

they have to be more friendly to the people who want to take advantage of the android system and enjoy it to fullest by rooting.

That way when ur selling a phone u can ask the customer...do u plan on rooting this device? If they say yes then you can afford to sell them phones with bad batteries like the thunderbolt.

Btw I had juice defender, it killed my battery more than saved it. The way I do it is simpler for me. No atk either. Verizon should make some of these technicians learn more about android.

Not a chance, VZW is VERY MUCH against rooting, roms, etc and is the reason these phones are being locked. I've spoken to reps for Motorola, HTC, LG, Samsung, and they all have been clear that their actual companies aren't nearly as preoccupied with stopping mods & rooting as the carriers. And Google couldn't possibly care less either.

But more and more we are seeing customers who are aware of how to root, are registered to this site or others, and if so I will engage with them about it. And almost always now, I will come around the counter and as I'm walking the customer out I'll refer them to these forums.

They are always blown away when they see the community involvement.

But on the battery front, I'm leaving work now, phone's been off the charger since 8:30am it's now almost 7pm and I've put it through quite a bit (slow day) and I'm at 60%. More on my exact usage maybe later, but very exciting

To be honest these forums are the reason I kept buying android. If it wasn't for these forums I'd probably be on a blackberry, or a dumb phone.

Never liked iPhones. Bought a voyager, a att tilt, and a bb storm just so I wouldn't get an iPhone.

If anything Verizon should be advertising forums! Lol its a big reason for a lot of business that they keep.

Got extended battery today. The phone e actually feels better in my hand. Slapped the vzw store hard case on and now its almost too big. Well see what battery life I get.

I'm in an area with 3G only so I figured battery life wouldn't be an issue... but I'm only getting about 10 hours at moderate use, check email throughout day, 20 text messages, check FB and a few other sites... I've turned the network to CDMA only aswell.

Anybody else out there in 3G only still having poor battery life?

I've also had two random reboots today. Thinking of taking it back in and exchanging for a new one.

Finally home from work, it's 8:40pm. Drained completely last night, left this morning 9am, extended at 100%. Left it unplugged in the car for the 40 min. drive to my store, streaming music via BT the whole time, half of which was 4G, half on 3G. Right as we opened I started streaming Around The Horn, PTI, NFL Mobile, showing to customers, etc. I streamed video this way for and hour and a half, and went to lunch at 80%. All this on 3G.

Then in the afternoon I let an episode of X-Files play on Netflix (1 hr), watched some more highlights on NFL Mobile (around 20 mins), and during this I was browsing this forum on the DF app, and checking FB on and off. When it got real slow in the store around 5 I downloaded a few songs and talked on the phone for 20 mins. Played some Air Attack HD for 20 minutes. Then, as I left around 7:30 I turned BT back on and streamed music all the way home again.

After all this, my battery stands at 50% around 8:45pm. That's almost 12 hrs of moderate to heavy use (I was constantly tinkering around with it, so screen was on at least 3 hours of the time I was in the store. This is more than I was expecting, and actually more than I even hoped for with this phone.

The only thing I want to try next is see what I can get out of this on an off day out and about, maybe using some navigation, and in constant 4G around here and NYC. If I can even get through a full day through 8-9pm on 4G with this type of usage, I'll be more than satisfied. I'm also thinking that even this usage is more than I'd typically do in a day, and realistically I'd probably plug it in the car if I wasn't just testing the battery like now.

So it's promising to say the least. Hope my 2 cents helps those on the fence as well

I've been getting 6 - 12hrs of usage on the standard battery depending on what I'm doing. 12hrs is when it's mostly idling. 6hrs when I'm streaming video, talking, texting, or using apps non stop.

I just picked up the extended battery today. Put it in, and it had 20% charge. Been trying to get it fully discharged to start a full recharge cycle and it's still kicking after 3.5hrs of streaming pandora w/ screen lock disabled and bluetooth / GPS enabled. Been on 5% for the past hour!

Finally got mine last night. As everyone else says, this thing is stupid fast!

I only see the screen dots every so often. It's almost like whatever is on the screen wasn't done rendering yet. I don't see it all of the time. It's really not a huge issue for me.

Love the phone so far.

I'm now using JuiceDefender Ultimate on my standard battery, and during the first run-down, I'm at 18 hours with 33% left. That's some light browsing, facebook, couple hours of calls, some navigation, and e-mail... It takes a while to train it where it should drop wifi for 4g and vice versa, but I have it configured to only allow network access every 15 minutes when the screen is off.

Extended battery impressions:
Size is not very noticeable at all. I like the feel of it in my hand, just slightly thicker than my og droid. It def weighs more, but who cares, if weight is a concern then you're just a little girl imo.

After a full charge. I'm using it. It has been light use so far, and it was idle over night. But so far its still at 90% 14 hrs 36min .
49% phone idle 49% cell stand by android os 2% and display 2%.
I have LTE off currently since I'm not viewing videos or anything, just some light texting, facebook and email. With this same use I'd be down at 70% with the standard battery.

I'm very happy with it so far and 25$ from vzw. You cant go wrong.

What app are you using to give you the exact percent of battery?
