OFFICIAL: Droid 2 Pre-Release thread

12 MP camera? If that Moto camera is 2.4 times as good as the current 5MP in the Moto Droid then it should be only about half as crappy as the current Droid's camera. :)

But seriously, I am more concerned about battery life. From what I've read here so far, even just small increases in processing speed like the 1GHz phones are experiencing far worse battery life than the Droid. That's not easy to do and all that firepower means nothing if you have to buy a Seidio brick.

Well you also have to take into account the processor as well. The 1Ghz Snapdragon is a completely different animal than the OMAP 3430 and OMAP 3630 that is supposed to be in the next Droid. They both have completely different power management features and capabilities as well as different GPUs and DSPs. Try not to think of a processor in a mobile device like ours as PC processor + whatever. The entire system Processor, GPU, DSP, interfaces, etc... all reside on ONE chip. So that chip is engineered, tested and refined ad nauseum to ensure the best power/performance ratio is reached because there are no do overs or component swaps. The new processor is also a much smaller process .45nm to .65nm now which will reduce power usage and heat.

Perfect example of differences in power management is look at the Moto Droid that is rooted and running a Low Voltage 1 Ghz kernel vs. a stock Nexus One or Droid Incredible. The Droid will usually have more times than not better battery life than both. Not to mention that a larger device will be able to have a larger battery which translates into greater OR equal battery life to current gen models.

I just looked at a demo of Blur on the Motorola site. It doesnt look all that bad. The Universal Inbox should be useful. Is Blur slow or something?

IMO I dont think the Droid 2 will be out till july 2011 when LTE 4g will be available. That way the Droid would have reached its year of life and the Droid 2 will be out to compete with the Iphone 4g. I wouldn't doubt that it has a front faceing 2mp cam with a 8-12 mp cam on back better keyboard and different color sequence (red and black or white as the one you see in the droid comericial when talking bout skyline suffering) and as for the shadow look for it to be a "SHADOW" over the Iphone HD as it reminds them what (I-don't do) and competes with apples newest product until they release their flagship device aka Droid 2. IMO all these new android phones MOTO has made (Cliqe cliqe xt devore backflip motoroi) were just protypes they put out to see how they could make and develope the Shadow and Droid 2 and how the consumer would respond with their likes and dislikes. While makeing money off the products witch is genuis in my eyes but hey I could be wrong lol but do notice a lot of these phones coming out do have the same design. :)

I have heard back from the author of the Gears for Android benchmark and he has some interesting insight:

Yes, that is my app and it is a generic compile w/o any optimizations for a specific platform.

By default on Android the fps is limited by v-sync which on most devices that I've seen is about 60 fps. It is possible that the demonstration device being used by TI has a higher refresh rate. Another possibility is that TI have modified android to use what is known as "swap interval 0" which allows the graphics driver to render faster than the display is capable of updating. This can be done by either discarding frames or by disabling v-sync which typically causes tearing.

I had not seen this video yet. Thanks for linking it.

It looks like a revision to the current Droid has an improved keyboard.
My Thoughts At The Time: The Lousy Keyboard on the Motorola Droid is Fixed
The "improved unit" is actually an older unit, from the initial release batch. All new Droids now have the flat KB.
Really? That's kind of shocking to hear. I wonder why my unit (pre-ordered and picked up on the release day) doesn't have the convex keyboard buttons? And why the heck would they "improve" it by going to the flat keys? Interesting. If this can be verified I'll have to post an update to my blog post. Thanks fr4c.

If the Droid 2 comes out while you're still on contract, do you think we'll be able eligible for a free upgrade ala iPhone 3Gs?

I'm just already saving money. 10 bucks a week at least so I can buy it out right. I'm only 6 months into my contract.

I got mine in April of this year, it has a manufacture date of Mar or Apr of this year, but I didnt get the revised keyboard. I remember reading about it somewhere in this forum. You would think the ones made later would have them since it was a complaint from many ppl.

I actually believe the 'rounded' keys were on earlier builds for the most part. I don't think anyone knows for sure why the switch to the flat keyboard, but some speculate either vendor inability to deliver or manufacturing cost downs.
