Wow, I'm amazed a #4 (master) played you. I've only played one once--he must've gotten a STEEL BALL and ruined his streak, cause I beat him (I'll call it luck).
When you win and see MINUS points, it's because you either disconnected or ended your last game early. When you do this, your rank isn't adjusted until the next time you play. So, even if you won and you should've earned points, it takes the difference, which could result in showing a MINUS score. I've had this happen several times when I get a phone call or am otherwise disconnected and then go back and play.
My guess is, if you are on an I-Touch and you don't get these kind of disturbances (phone calls and disconnect through 3G) you don't have to worry about these frustrations. Also, if you have any program POLLING (like email) you can get pitches that skip, etc, and it can really screw you up.
As far as crashing instead of hitting Monster Shots -- the MAIN way to win is just to hit consecutive homers. When you face really good players, you might lose, but it's still the best way. So, even if you hit monster shots, it's not as bad as simply missing one
Just hit homers, as many as you can, as fast as you can. Of course, if you can put together some crashes great.
I played a game two days ago -- the guy was ranked way high, like in the 30,000 -- I hit ever homer I had a chance to, and it was some sort of bonus every time, too -- he DESTROYED me, and from what I could tell, he never had a 2x. Sometimes I assume these guys have lost their data files and are getting back on with a new user name and tearing it up.
I think they should make three changes to their system:
1) If you get a phone call, it should recognize it and not punish you as a loss.
2) If you beat a low ranked player 3x times, you should get a bonus 5 win points. I understand you are most likely a better player, but getting -17 on a single loss is a huge risk, especially when a random STEEL BALL can ruin any given game. The chances of winning 1 out of 5 games against a better player are still pretty high, because of random bonuses, pitch sequences, and SKULL balls (steel balls, particularly). A low rank player should be discouraged from repeatedly playing those odds. Even if they lost three in a row, they would only lose 9 + 5 = 14, when a high ranked player loses 14 right off the bat. You have to beat a sucky player 6 times in a row to make up for one loss!!!
3) Along with the rank and winpoints, they should report the average # of pitches a player wins with. Then if you see a 30,000 player and they win in 9.0 pitches per game, you know they are a sleeper
One other complaint I have. If you hit START...and the other guy waits, then hit start right as you exit, you are credited with a loss. This is BS. You should not be punished for quitting, IMO, until the first pitch goes out. I've been disconnected a few times before the game ever started, and it's lame to get punished for that.
