[Official] R2-D2 [D2] Owners Thread

Just found this forum. I've had my R2 unit for about 3 - 4 weeks now. Its my first Android and smart phone. Loving it so far, especially being a huuuge SW fan.

I have had one issue, tho. The screen will arbitrarily go dark. I can see the active app if I catch the light just right. Then I have to do the quick sleep button press and wake it back up to get my screen to light up again. And I may have to do this a few times for the screen to stay lit. I haven't noticed any particular pattern that would explain the behavior, i.e. running a particular app, battery running low. Any thoughts, ideas, or suggestions would be appreciated.

I've noticed the same problem a couple times, happened earlier today in fact.. Screebl seems to help a bit if you run that, but a lot of times it seems the phone hangs doing some sort of process and won't respond. Mine usually comes back after a minute or so, so I just wait. Only once the screen never came back on at all and I had to do a battery pull reset... but the rest of the times it has been temporary. I've had the phone a little over a week and I think it's done it about 4-5 times... hoping it's not a long term issue.

Hi, I got my R2D2 phone a day after it came out. This is my first smart phone and I'm loving it. Google maps/navigator is the best. The one big issue I have is signal fluctuation. Verizon is bad enough out here where I'm at, but when I do have full signal strength, it will fluctuate from 4 bars to 2 then back to 4 and so forth. When I have weak signal, it will still fluctuate, but it will drop 3g alot. Luckily, I spend most of my time either at school or home so I just use wifi. I've also noticed that sometimes the top, power, button doesn't always light up the screen and I have to slide open the keyboard to get the screen to light up.

Edit: I found my answer for this question, so I removed it.

Now I need to figure out how to install a stealthy way of forwarding my gf's text messages to my email.
(i know its morally questionable but she's been hiding stuff from me and it had me worried.. That's why I bought her a phone on my plan.) ;)

Anyone know how I can turn r2d2 into a rebel spy? ;)

I know you can get on Verizon's web sight, log in, and see a history of every number thats txt her and she's sent txt to. Just like a call log. Actually you can view her complete call log as well.
Good Luck

Welcome!

The difference between the two is this: The R2D2 Droid 2 is a limited Empire Strikes Back version of the D2. It is in the form of the Astromech Droid R2-D2 on the back and silver on the front. It is preloaded with a bunch of Star Wars goodies and was released with system version 2.4.5.A957 - a slightly different version of the regular D2 release.

Both, however, can be rooted the same way. I personally used the one click method here (before I found this forum), but the instructions are all basically the same:

Easier 1-2-3 Droid 2 Root for Windows / Linux / Mac - xda-developers

Hope this helped.

I need more widgets with all these home screens Lol
I have Fancy Widget, Sports Tap, Pandora, and NY Times. What others do you guys find very useful?

overclock kernals for the R2D2?

Hey fellows. I rooted, have clockwork, droid2 bootstrapper, and setcpu running on my R2D2. I have profiles set to underclock when the screen is off and/or the battery is low. I want to overclock it, but I'm not sure what kernal to use. So I have some questions.
1) Will any Droid2 kernal work with the R2D2 units?
2) What kernal's would ya'll recommend?
3) How far have ya'll overclocked yours?

Thanks guys!

DroidForums is a favorite of mine. Plus Dolphin Browser, music alarm, ebay, facebook, rockplayer. One screen for the games. Also I'd recommend an app called "AndWobble". Its on the market, its for wallpaper pics. It will make part or parts of your favorite pic wobble! Very fun, very cool app !!!

Hey folks, I am new here, and just purchased my first Droid phone. Being a huge Star Wars fan, the temptation was too much to stay away from the R2 phone. I am totally new to rooting, etc and want to learn how to do that without turning my phone into an expensive paper weight. I have seen a TON of cool screen shots on the Droid FB page, and all of them seem to have rooted their phones, especially with the Luna Theme, which looks really cool. I don't understand a lot of the terminology yet, but I hope to educate myself and move forward. Thanks, Jonathan

I found a program called "Droid X/2 Overclock" by JRummy. I'm testing it on R2D2 now, so far its easy to use and works great!

Why?

OK, maybe I'm missing something. Why would you buy the R2-D2 D2 phone and then want to install custom ROMs (or Kernals)? Isn't the whole purpose behind getting this phone to have the Star Wars rom/kernal (I'm still not sure what it's called - some say ROM, some say Kernal). I've rooted my phone only to get rid of bloatware and to access wireless tether - not to mess up the sole purpose of spending the extra money for the phone.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

THANKS ! ! !

I bought the phone with the intentions of doing this. I wanted a phone, not a toy.
