[Official] R2-D2 [D2] Owners Thread

Gingerbread?

OK, I don't know if anyone out there will be able to answer this yet, but I'm going to ask.

I have (obviously) the R2-D2 Droid 2 phone. I was leery about rooting it, but finally broke down and did so - but all I've changed is the boot logo (to the Death Star) and installed the wireless tether.

I have read on the boards that the new OTA update may cause issues with rooted phones. I've also read that OTA updates unroot the phone as well. So my question is this - should I be worried about my phone becoming a brick with the new update? I spent a lot of time convincing the wife to let me buy the phone and, other than the boot logo, would like to keep it stock.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

Have you tried reading through this thread? This thread will answer most questions you may have concerning your R2.

What I did when I first got my R2...
-rooted it using the "no pc required method"
*I now use the DoRootMac method, there is a windows version (DoRootWin) too.

-removal of unwanted apps using AstroFileManager (available in Market)

-removal of unwanted system apps through RootExplorer (available in Market)
*there is a free way using commands, but I got lazy and this takes 90% less time

not sure if the issue has been fixed but i saw the post dealing with the star wars rom and it said not to put it on my phone but it seemed like people have tried it rooting the phone isnt the problem i can do that easy its the content i want to make sure i can keep and also if anyone has those apks for the lock scrren clock and boot that would be great

I'm not sure I understand what you are asking. If you already have the R2-D2 Droid 2, there is no reason to install the Star Wars ROM. It's already there. The issue you describe (lock screen logos and Star Wars boot) are issues people who wanted the R2-D2 "stuff" but didn't want to pay the extra for the phone.

Rooting a phone doesn't do anything but give you "super-user" access. How you USE that access is what would cause you to loose stuff off the phone (ie: installing different ROMs, removing bloatware, etc.)

Hope this helped!

Just saw this thread, been awhile since I had been here after setting up my R2D2. I got the D2 the first weekend it came out but had to wait on the R2D2 for my second family share upgrade to kick in. Now my wife has the old D2, if you can call it old hehe, and I get reminded all day of my Star Wars geekdomdancedroid

I found all the D2 stuff to work just fine on the R2D2.

I see posters mention info previous in the thread instead of answering the actual questions. I help run a forum for the Star Wars Galaxies Emulator where this same issue comes up after dozens of pages in a big thread. The solution is to take the second post in threads like this and the Mods keep it updated with useful info from everybody....nobody wants to go through 22+ pages, we do live in the instant gratification generation :icon_ lala:

I've got an awesome question for everyone. What case are you using??? I found a clear $3 snap on the cracked in week 2. got what I paid for...

hey guys i'm kalel, got an r2d2 and a droid x. Looking for anything cool for this special device!! I haven't seen another around either, love it!

Hey everyone, first post here.

1. I have a R2D2 Droid 2, and the novelty of the Star Wars stuff has worn off. The phone is rooted, and I would like a clean vanilla ROM with no bloatware. Can anyone tell me what ROMs work with the R2D2?

2. The main reason I am so eager to replace the ROM is because my phone reboots itself multiple times each day, usually after it is locked, or during unlock. I have been told that this is a common glitch and some custom ROMs fix this problem.

Thanks

Searching the forums will turn up answers to most of the questions you have...

SBF the Full 2.3.20 SBF and then install whatever ROM you want.

that's the simple answer.
