[Official] R2-D2 [D2] Owners Thread

OK, maybe I'm missing something. Why would you buy the R2-D2 D2 phone and then want to install custom ROMs (or Kernals)? Isn't the whole purpose behind getting this phone to have the Star Wars rom/kernal (I'm still not sure what it's called - some say ROM, some say Kernal). I've rooted my phone only to get rid of bloatware and to access wireless tether - not to mess up the sole purpose of spending the extra money for the phone.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

THANKS ! ! !

The media dock, the chassis that isn't dull black, and that fun feeling of having a special edition of something. Not to mention the subtle design fixes with this batch of D2's (keyboard slide, power button springiness, etc).

I thought I'd keep the star wars stock rom, but when I got the phone, I was underwhelmed with both the SW wallpaper and (especially) the apps.

I bought the phone with the intentions of doing this. I wanted a phone, not a toy.

So apparently you missed the whole point to my question. You could have bought a regular Droid 2 or any of the other Droid in the line. Why spend the extra money for something special only to change it? That would be like buying a limited edition Porsche and then repainting it, removing the engine and putting it on lifts - doesn't make sense...

prolefeedprocessor - I understand the reason for buying the phone - I did they day it came out (took some convincing to the wife since I had just bought a BB Storm in January). I just have a hard time understanding the reasoning behind gutting it for something different.

Thanks for the input...

As for me, I wanted a cool ass toy that could aslo make phone calls. Truth! I love the Star Wars theme, added some extra wallpapers, etc. As for the Rom, I'm hoping someone cleans out all the bloatware crap, keeps all the Star Wars stuff and makes it even cooler.

I never painted it, I just swapped the engine.

I had a D1, so I know what these things are capable of. I knew the StarWars wouldn't cut it, so changed it to something more suitable to me wants and needs.

Just ordered my R2-D2 Droid!!! going to be my first smartphone, so i'm beyond excited!

Debating about Rooting it.
i think the free tethering would be nice?
also what's this bloatware stuff? how easy is it to remove?
And is overclocking / underclocking pretty easy to do?
anything else i should consider if i decide to root?

sorry for all the noob questions.

There's plenty of answers to all these questions all over these forums. Take some time & do some research. That is the point of these things after all.

Definitely root. Tethering should be free since your paying for unlimited access!! Paying more for tethering is stupid. PDANet is a good program to try. BW is all the crap Zerizon installs on your phone that you don't need or want, and can't uninstall. It also slows down your boot time by loading software, bloatware, you never use. Droid X/2 is an awsome app, now with profiling built in, making clocking very easy. KUDO's to JRummy! Overclocking today on this phone isn't a big deal, but as apps get bigger, the phone will slow, like all computers onthe planet. Underclocking will extend battery life, sometime a lot. Search for overclocking 101 in this forum, hell of a good article!
Use Quadrant to test your overclocking. Pay attention, overclocking to far will drop your score and performance.
Good luck

The point of these things is to help each other. If you don't want to help, don't reply.

And what kind of gratification is there if someone tells you the answers to everything?

you're right. i'm not new to forums, and on other ones that i've been on for much longer i'd have the same response. search.

it's more like having someone point you in the right direction. all i was looking for. it's just being new, you don't always know which threads have all the good info or which ones are just cluttered with ramblings and such. not everyone has time to sift through bunches of threads, when there's clearly people around who can give some advice or show you which threads to look at that will have the answers to the questions being asked. i guess my original post was written in a way that i wanted to be spoon fed answers though, so that is my fault.

ps. before even getting a response in this thread, i started to dig on my own and found all of the answers that i asked anyways. haha... shoulda done my reading before posting.

When I posted my first question on this forum someone took time out of life to help me out. I was very greatful. My personal gradification comes from continuing that positive attitude. Most everyone on this forum is helpful, usually patient, and usually quit nice. My hope is someday EVERYONE will follow suit. It took me all of 2 minutes to help that fellow out, instead of 1 minute to be, rude.

I am a new smartphone user and my very first phone was the R2D2 droid 2 and I love it. Im just wondering wat overclocking and underclocking is. I love this phone and im always trying to learn new things about it although the only cool thing I have found is useful is rooting and using wireless tethering. Is their anything else tht is pretty cool like tht and suggestions on awesome apps?

I bought my R2D2 three days on Cyber monday at a storefront VZW. I am still learning the interface of course (previous phone was a Moto Razor). I had gone in to buy a Droid 2 and was pleasantly surprised when the salesman said I could have the R2D2 phone for the same price as the regular Droid 2(unadvertised special). It was a no brainer, heck yes I want Star Wars phone :D
I am loving my phone, I wish the battery was a little stronger and last longer.
